A couple of months back we brought you the debut of a young French talent, Hoel. He's now back alongside his partner Karl Klaus, under their Dusty Corners guise. Following a debut appearance on the tactfully curated Files Rec. we have the privilege of doing the follow-up honors with 6 tracks that you wouldn't be able to pinpoint in a genre if your life depended on it.

Ghostly vocal snippets, eerie sound FX, syncopated yet groove-filled beats and synths that feel as if you're caught in warm, sweet, non-life threatening mollasses make for an unprecedented listening experience and unforgettable moments on a dancefloor, if you're gutsy enough to pull one of these from under your sleeve at the right moment.

In his return to Dronarivm five years since A Different Definition of Love, Brock Van Wey, aka bvdub, presents his second-ever full-length, monolithic work at just over 79 minutes, continuing his quest to blur all lines of genre and definition just as the barriers between sleep and waking life –imagined and real – continue to break down and disappear further by the day... a life of consuming madness continuing its guise as grand artistic vision.

Mercatante is a New York-based electronic musician with self-releases dating back to 2007, appearing on a handful of boutique and independent labels. For his debut appearance on ASIP, Mercatante takes the concept of Ø [a symbol used in mathematics for an empty set or null] and explores the possibilities of starting out from nothing, "specifically, trying to understand how the idea of ‘nothing’ fits into the realm of sound, and at the same time, exist in a world of influence at every turn." This is an album that could easily appear on the celebrated raster label or get a head nod from the Alva Noto crowd. Across the ten surgically precise pieces, Mercante explores the concepts of meticulously placed sonic elements, investigating void and all that negative space. It is at once minimal in its execution and maximal in the presented sound, occupying frequencies evoked by glitchy IDM [is that still a used term?], post-techno and reductionist soundtracks.

"Whether conscious or not, water has long been an influential factor in my work.  There is something intangible, powerful, emotional, alluring and frightening about water.  With this mix, I thought I would explore if and how water has influenced other artists who I respect and admire.  A quick peruse of my music collection lead to the discovery of quite a few pieces that are somehow connected to water.  Be it rivers, streams, oceans or rainfall, it seems water is often an inspirational subject for many composers and this doesn't surprise me.  

I remember a conversation I had in university with a friend who was studying oceanography and fluid dynamics.  I had recently learned about the use of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT's) in audio analysis.  My layman understanding of this was that FFT's allow for efficient analysis and resynthesis of audio data so that computers can better handle the vast amounts of sample data typically needed to represent and process digital audio.  Long story short, my friend (who had a much better understanding of the application of FFT's than I) revealed to me that they use the same process and similar math for analyzing tidal data.  What struck me about this was that if you look closely at things like sound waves or tidal patterns, etc., there are universal similarities - that almost everything can be boiled down to vibrations, oscillations, frequencies, etc.  Of course, there is much more to our relationship with water than just that.  We depend on it for life as does all life on this planet.  We also play in it, float on it and sometimes it destroys our homes or we drown in it.  Growing up on the west coast, many of my memories both fond and otherwise, somehow involve water, whether it be in the foreground or simply in the background.  It seems I'm not alone".

Manchester’s Joe McBride pens elaborate, emotive & intellectual soundscapes, drawing in influences across a spectrum of bass culture and electronica. Having released with Exit Records, Brownswood, Styrax, Auxiliary & Med School, as well as remixes for Model 500, Snow Patrol, Lowb, Max Cooper & a plethora more, Synkro has found a home at R&S sister label ‘Apollo’.

In these weird times where we are forced to stay at home and we have to avoid socialising and seeing places, imagination is a big resource.
