Abiding by Bob Dylan’s folk philosophy of placing the integrity of the song before all else, Bergmann has been spending more time on the writing process than ever before. In his current creative efforts, he’ll tell you that he strives for honesty but not overexposure, vulnerability but not weakness, straightforwardness but not simplicity. He takes inspiration from the natural side of Los Angeles: the beach, the woods, and the outdoors - as well as a near constant stream of Neil Young’s On the Beach.  

Fittingly, his last 7” (“Old Dream” b/w “Summer’s End”) was recorded in Fairfax Recordings’ “Studio A,” - the very same room where Neil Young himself tracked After the Gold Rush when the studio was known as Sound City. Produced by Kevin Augunas and Nick Waterhouse and featuring the legendary Jimmie Haskell on strings, the tracks were released on May 2, 2015, and he is now set to release a new EP – Romantic Thoughts – on October 2.  Featuring Nick Waterhouse’s co-production with Kevin Augunas on the lead single, “You May Never Know”, and a duet with Warpaint’s Emily Kokal on “Wishing Song”, the new 5-song EP is a dynamic body of sound in which each song showcases different sides of Bergmann’s personas.

Latest single off James Supercave's debut album 'Better Strange' (out 2/12). 

It is not easy to know James Supercave. Their web presence is clipped and understated. Coming from a firm belief that the music speaks for itself, Supercave's debut album, Better Strange, is the only introduction they’ll allow. 

Better Strange affirms Supercave as both figment and figurehead for a genre not yet defined, exploiting the edge of the pop idiom, cheating in psych-rock with thick, low end grooves normally reserved for funk and soul.  

This is the hustle. In Better Strange, James Supercave is patent leather lounge singer on one track (“With You”) gone Bowie in the next (“The Right Thing.”) Aloof and glam-centric until moments of biting commentary, winking jabs at corporations (“Chairman Gou”) and frustrated anthems angled at the internet native (“Virtually a Girl”). Between nagging synth, shape shifting vocal timbre and lurching bass, the record is flecked with strange—but, as James Supercave proves, things are so much better strange. 

Production-wise, Better Strange is glassy, but not manufactured thanks to the analog, “  more room, less computer”   ethos of Fairfax Recordings. Supercave’s debut LP, Better Strange, releases on February 12, 2016 via Fairfax Recordings.

What began two years ago as informal jam sessions for Ariel Pink, Neil Schuh, and Crooked Cowboy evolved into a collaborative recording project with one rule to each session: no one was allowed to say no to an idea. Using whatever they could get their hands on to record inspirations, they finally went into the studio, and within three sessions the beginnings of “Cloak & Dagger” emerged. The Los Angeles trio’s satisfaction with the single led them to ask friend, Aaron Frankel, to remix the track for the B-side.

2012 included the success of Pink’s album, Mature Themes, as well as Schuh and Crooked Cowboy releasing multiple records together as Crooked Cowboy and The Freshwater Indians. The year brought on difficulties for the group, too, when Crooked Cowboy suffered a massive heart attack, significantly delaying the trio’s release date.

At last, “Cloak & Dagger” drops 12/18/12 on LA’s vinyl-only record store and label, Origami Vinyl. The 7” is limited to a one-time pressing of 500 copies on transparent orange vinyl.
