All our promises turn to gold
When we understand there is something real
Suddenly we feel so old
When the truth finally leaves its mark
Insanity takes control
When the lonely man starts to sing his song
All his memories seem so cold

In our sanctuary of happiness
So often lost, so often found
We never stop to think, we just start to cry
We drag our spirits down
When we try to escape the walls
There is no place left to go

** I wrote this song when I was about 18 or 19. It is about fueling our fantasies of what we want our life to be like (all our promises turn to gold), only to be confronted by the understanding that reality has its own trajectory.  We lose our innocence, feel isolated and confused, still wanting to dwell in our perfect fantasies, yet thrust into a lonely and uncaring reality, where we mourn the dreams we've lost and our memories of them become cold. Meanwhile, we don't yet know how to move on and escape the mental barriers we created for ourselves.
