"This mix came up at a great time. After the chaos of recent weeks, and a generally intense few months, I've escaped to Paris to unwind, slow down, and feel a bit more present. My days have been filled with wanderings, drinking tea, and writing under the sun in Park de Belleville. This being said, the mix is more nocturnal in tone, evoking my most tranquil moments: clear nights talking to the moon by a pond near my home in Eccles, lysergic bath times melting into lengthy drone works. There's old and new stuff in there, moody and ethereal bits, zonked out 20+ minute jams. Nothing too jarring, a bit of a rarity for me.” Mike Smaczylo

OS Premiere: An Avrin - Plata [Scuffed Recordings]

Soothers #03 is brought to you by Texas-based producer Gi Gi, taking us on a jazz-based journey of skittering rides and cascading woodwinds.

"This one was an exercise in tying together two disparate but interconnected styles: 21st century electronic jazz & a loosely idm-y strain of 90’s downtempo electronic music. The first third or so focuses on the former, the middle bit on the later, & the last section a sort of imprecise blend of the two. I find there’s a parallel in the complexity of the jazz instrumentalists’ performances & the electronic producers’ programming, a virtuosic streak that's balanced with restraint in service of texture & mood. I like how in many of these tracks it’s hard to parse what is organic vs synthetic— a live saxophone recording may be chopped & looped so that it sounds like a sample; likewise, a sample may be smoothed and blended so that you're fooled into thinking it’s a live take. Both of these styles share the sort of tranquil quality you’d associate with “ambient music”, but are (to my ears) a little more engaging or stimulating than your typical static, droning example of the genre due to a heavier emphasis on movement, both rhythmic & melodic. Think of it as a different panel of the ambient umbrella— Active Ambient?”

"I take pleasure in extracting the calm within a song, when it may seem chaotic at first. I adore the subjectivity in each track, I’m not always a fan of the obvious and I want people to put on their voyeuristic hats and worm through these melodies with me. I’ve navigated these past few months by keeping focused on what matters, I’m constantly evolving, growing and learning how to pause and breathe. Dudbridge Garage International co-founder LeftLeft returns with his second solo release on the label, with three new genre-dodging tracks bridging the gap between melodic and minimalistic club music. ‘Zooki’s Return’ sees LeftLeft exploring new musical territory, with an altogether more laidback track influenced by trap and alternative R&B. Christian Duka serves us a chill soundtrack of visceral soothing moments for Soothers #05.

"My loved one always says (borrowing from Rick & Morty): “you can’t learn anything until you learn how to chill” - and she’s damn right. Chilling is something I am pretty bad at though. You know, living in London and being slightly enslaved by my passions… but still, there is one place I am able to chill: the space in-between spectral voices, dub-infused grooves and weird & wonderful textures of the likes featured in this cocktail of, personally, very emotional tracks. As I listen, the oomphs and throbs flying out of subwoofers transport me right where stress lives - inside my own body. There, whispering words of comfort to my stiff muscles, I finally take a moment to take care of myself. 

I hope this mix will serve as a soundtrack for many other visceral soothing moments like this - a warm bath, incense and candles are highly recommended :)”

Joining us for Tapes #115 is ERIS, a Berlin-based duo formed by Enrica Falqui and Dea. Two souls from different musical histories met on a simple night out. They instantly connected and their taste and passion spiralled into production and mixing sessions. Their debut EP was released on CABARET Recordings and with that Moments EP was created.

Enrica Falqui represents the Sardinian half of ERIS. Her journey begins somewhere in 2009, when she started to create music and DJ. The years that followed were filled with contributions to dance culture with her DJ sets, alias productions, and her own record label. Dea represents the Croatian half of ERIS. A woman who has danced on all floors and experienced many memorable musical journeys. Born into a family of musicians, Deawas dancing before walking and playing piano before she could write.

She runs a bi-monthly radio show on rinse named 'planet 2 planet' and is a resident for hangar in Belgium. An opportunity for her to explore genres and invite celebrated and upcoming artists to join.

DJ, producer and singer Elias Mazian is a firm fixture of the club circuit in Amsterdam and beyond and he’s joining us for Tapes #126.

DINA, the Berlin-based producer, DJ and co-founder of Nachtcrew – a collective fusing psychedelic music, art and 3D mapping, is up next for Tapes #135.

DINA’s production spans spacey ambience, punching basslines, and ethereal trance. Her most recent EP on Slash is described as an ”impressive combination of immersive basslines transforming into huge amounts of dancefloor euphoria”. Born to chill, forced to DJ – Mija is a multidisciplinary Berlin-based DJ and producer, joining us for Tapes #140.

Her career has been marked by versatility and experimentation, consistently pushing the boundaries of electronic music. Her latest works, including "Summer Groove" and “Soft Groove" EP showcase her playful yet sophisticated take on the hardgroove sub-genre, merging elements of house, techno, and funk. 

With the new wave of eurodance and hardgroove sweeping the globe, Mija has found a pocket that incorporates all her favourite sounds of disco and classic house with the faster bpms and hardcore rave sounds she grew up in. She also runs a DIY community-driven record label, Never B Alone, where all new music is selected and collectively voted on by the artists.

Taking over Tapes #151 is Gearmaster, formerly known as Abdul Raeva, a collaboration between Steffan Todorović and Joonas Arro. The pair have created some of the most consistent, no-nonsense club bangers in recent years. 

They first crossed paths in early 2018, shortly after which they formed Abdul Raeva— a project that would become pivotal in shaping a new wave of acid and progressive house. This year marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for the pair, as they announced Gearmaster would be their primary focus moving forward. Serving to create a more refined and versatile sound, the duo promise the same energetic style that they have become known for. Whether it’s shape-shifting psychedelia, spongy basslines or punchy grooves, fun is always the core element of their sound.

SUCHI’s club vision is a vibrant fusion of global influences, a kaleidoscopic blend of eclectic dancefloor energy that defines her work as a producer, DJ, and the driving force behind Ikke Sant. With a Rinse FM residency and a distinct sonic identity, she crafts immersive, genre-spanning sets that pulse with originality.

For Tapes #152, she leans into a peak-time energy while keeping the groove at the forefront. Opening with a 6400 Crew record, she moves fluidly through 90s and early 2000s house and tech house selections. Midway, a shift emerges with Holloway, steering the mix into deeper, bass-driven tech before building back up with Der Dritte Raum's remix of Resistance D and closing with Jamie Anderson. The set also features her upcoming remix of Zaltsman, soon to be released on Treads.

Hailing from East Kingston, Jamaica, Gavsborg joins us for Tapes #153. Gavsborg is the founder of Equiknoxx/Equiknoxx Music and has been producing for over ten years, with his first success being the Billboard charting single, “Step Out” by Busy Signal. 

Gavsborg’s left-field approach to production has afforded him the opportunity to work with a wide variety of artists and labels from different corners of music such as: Sam Morton, Addis Pablo, DDS, Busy Signal and more.

Bringing in Tapes #156 is Kyoto-based DJ and producer, Stones Taro. Known for his unique sound that seamlessly blends breakbeats, UK garage, house, and jungle, Stones Taro has carved out a distinctive place in the global electronic music scene.

As a monthly resident on Rinse FM, he has gained international recognition, with releases on prestigious labels such as Scuffed Recordings, Time Is Now, Hardline, and Future Classic. His DJ sets, characterised by a blend of breakbeats, bass music, dub, and techno, have earned him a dedicated following worldwide. He also co-runs the dance music label NC4K, which continues to release high-quality, unique music that connects Japan and the international music scene.

Joining us for Tapes #158 is Rotterdam-based Kessler, who’s at the forefront of immersive left-field techno, cut-throat breaks, and any obscure bass-infused rhythm in between.

As head of record label, Elicit, Kessler’s holistic approach to rhythmical and immersive sound has cemented himself as a rising star in recent years, with hi-energy and progressive selections captivating audiences and leaving lasting impressions around the world. 

From cutting-edge techno mutations, dark and dubbed out half-time steppers, late ‘90s bassbin shaking jungle through to early 2010s post-dubstep heydays, the artist’s UK bass culture influence is definitely present, but never a constant with elements from afro-centric or latin grooves, giving him the edge.

For Tapes #164, A for Alpha dives deep into a sound that has long lived in her record collection: dark, dubby, and hypnotically groovy tech house from the late 90s and early 00s.

Inspired by an inspiring summer at Love International, Houghton, and other spaces that celebrate deep listening and late-night movement, this mix is a love letter to the stripped-back, rolling energy of that era. Drawing on tracks from Nathan Coles, Terry Francis, Floorbangers, Tony Hewitt, SWAG, and seminal labels like Surreal, Wiggle, and Visitor, A for Alpha unearths a raw, tribal-tinged sound that still feels vital today.

It’s a personal journey, one that explores a side of her taste not always heard in the club, but deeply rooted in their identity as a DJ. Groovy, dark, and full of low-end weight.

Joining us for Tapes #167 is Swoose, an artist bubbling up from the evergreen Irish underground, as inspired by the golden era of machine-driven house and techno as he is the contemporary blends of modern dance music.

With one eye on the past and another firmly on the future, Swoose’s amalgamation of sun-kissed house, 90s IDM, warm soul and emotive electronica has earmarked the emerging artist as one of the UK and Ireland’s finest electronic talents.

Cutting his teeth at the now legendary Shine in Belfast alongside close friend and collaborator Cromby, Swoose’s exploits have taken him from his hometown to London where he has become an important member of the inner-city circuit, turning in sets at fabric, Printworks and Drumsheds with European performances at Berghain, Space Ibiza and Robert Johnson.

Following the release of ‘Blue Coat, Red Dress’ earlier this year, kilig steps up for their first EP for UK party and label Origins. Marking the second output for the imprint, ‘Is It Time’ will be available on the 3rd July. 

Holding a residency at London venue Night Tales, kilig draws from the city’s dynamic rave sound, moving away from the previous ambient tones found on their last EP. Leading with the title track, the single is tinged with euphoria as a warm vocal sample echos over shimmering synths. ‘VHS Flex’ and ‘Buckled’ take a darker turn as the sun sets into evening, filled with grittiness and attitude. The EP comes to a close with ‘Bed Test’, a night-to-light record with an endorphin-rich melody. 

Explaining the story and connection with Origins, kilig says, “When kilig started I made a little list of targets and places that I wanted to play, and people that I wanted to send music too. In terms of London, Origins sat pretty high on that list, booking names I genuinely looked up to. I finally got some music in front of the team there and a conversation opened up, but not about playing, instead they wanted to release a record. In the year since that conversation I’ve written a fair few club tracks. The writing process was very different to other stuff I make, maybe evident in the broad range of styles on this EP; my favourite elements of techno, breaks, house and electro, without sitting still for too long.

It feels somewhat ironic that during this time, where clubs can't even open, I would be releasing my first full club-centric EP - posing: Is It Time? 

I couldn’t be more excited to be working with the Origins team, especially in this strange time. I hope you find a suitable Time? to enjoy the release, and hopefully we can enjoy it together soon.” 

Origins launched their label in 2017 with an EP from Tomossini which featured a remix from Hodge and saw support from Anastasia Kristensen during her Boiler Room debut.
