Hailing from Western Australia, Guy Contact specialises in creating low-slung and sultry downtempo house rhythms. The subtle softness in his percussion is released by comforting yet pressurised acid grooves. The music is plasmic yet pounding, often mind-bending and sometimes soothing. Stepping up for Tapes #48 is Edinburgh-based J Wax. He started releasing music in 2019 but in this short space of time the young DJ & producer has had two highly respectable releases, with a third out very soon. 

With his sets encompassing everything from electro, breaks, jungle, garage and more, J Wax is an artist gaining a serious amount of pace. He also co-runs Edinburgh based collective Palidrone, which has hosted acts such as SPFDJ, Sync24, Giant Swan, DMX Krew and DJ Stingray.

OS Premiere: Austin Ato - When Love Is Drums [Phonica White]

Former military man and marching band member James Bangura is next up for #51 on our Tapes series. He’s an artist who has roamed the world and picked up musical influences at every stop on the way. Be it D&B in Alabama, blog house in California, or the rich house sound of New York, this Washington DC native is now distilling all those references into his own searing sounds. 
They have come on labels like Mister Saturday Night and can range from sauced out to brutally energetic. And the latter of those two is what defines his unrelenting mix for us. It is a hard-hitting collision of raw, decaying textures, pummeling drums, and stark, post-industrial atmospheres that are thrillingly harsh. The rhythms roam from the fringes of techno to the heart of jungle and on to icy but powerful minimalism that very much consumes your body. So strap in, cause this is one helluva ride.

"This mix came up at a great time. After the chaos of recent weeks, and a generally intense few months, I've escaped to Paris to unwind, slow down, and feel a bit more present. My days have been filled with wanderings, drinking tea, and writing under the sun in Park de Belleville. This being said, the mix is more nocturnal in tone, evoking my most tranquil moments: clear nights talking to the moon by a pond near my home in Eccles, lysergic bath times melting into lengthy drone works. OS Premiere: An Avrin - Plata [Scuffed Recordings]

Soothers #03 is brought to you by Texas-based producer Gi Gi, taking us on a jazz-based journey of skittering rides and cascading woodwinds.

"This one was an exercise in tying together two disparate but interconnected styles: 21st century electronic jazz & a loosely idm-y strain of 90’s downtempo electronic music. The first third or so focuses on the former, the middle bit on the later, & the last section a sort of imprecise blend of the two. I find there’s a parallel in the complexity of the jazz instrumentalists’ performances & the electronic producers’ programming, a virtuosic streak that's balanced with restraint in service of texture & mood. I like how in many of these tracks it’s hard to parse what is organic vs synthetic— a live saxophone recording may be chopped & looped so that it sounds like a sample; likewise, a sample may be smoothed and blended so that you're fooled into thinking it’s a live take. Both of these styles share the sort of tranquil quality you’d associate with “ambient music”, but are (to my ears) a little more engaging or stimulating than your typical static, droning example of the genre due to a heavier emphasis on movement, both rhythmic & melodic. Think of it as a different panel of the ambient umbrella— Active Ambient?”

OS Premiere: Farr - Give Me Shelter (Ciel's Safe Harbour Mix) [Out Of Sorts]

Up next for #58 on our Tapes series is London-based ‘An Avrin’, an electronic music artist most known for releases on ‘Scuffed Recordings’ and ‘Slippery Sounds’.  His eclectic releases are characterised by clean sampling, intricate detail and heavy bass, giving them a defining character despite the variations in genre and speed. ‘An Avrin’ also frequently releases music independently with playful bootlegs and EPs pushing the ever changing UK underground sound. More recently he has translated these productions into success behind the decks with shows in London, Leeds, Glasgow and even overseas in Kyiv, Ukraine. With a roster of finely tuned club tracks, no doubt ‘An Avrin’ is one to watch this year.

OS Premiere: Nate Swan - Lemtec [Foreign Frequencies]

Dudbridge Garage International co-founder LeftLeft returns with his second solo release on the label, with three new genre-dodging tracks bridging the gap between melodic and minimalistic club music. ‘Zooki’s Return’ sees LeftLeft exploring new musical territory, with an altogether more laidback track influenced by trap and alternative R&B. It’s an unexpected end to the release, but one that shows LeftLeft’s plethora of influences and production skills.

Christian Duka serves us a chill soundtrack of visceral soothing moments for Soothers #05.

"My loved one always says (borrowing from Rick & Morty): “you can’t learn anything until you learn how to chill” - and she’s damn right. Chilling is something I am pretty bad at though. You know, living in London and being slightly enslaved by my passions… but still, there is one place I am able to chill: the space in-between spectral voices, dub-infused grooves and weird & wonderful textures of the likes featured in this cocktail of, personally, very emotional tracks. As I listen, the oomphs and throbs flying out of subwoofers transport me right where stress lives - inside my own body. There, whispering words of comfort to my stiff muscles, I finally take a moment to take care of myself. 

I hope this mix will serve as a soundtrack for many other visceral soothing moments like this - a warm bath, incense and candles are highly recommended :)”

OS Premiere: Cando - Sting In The Tail [Counter Slip]

Kreggo has been releasing tracks with his unique twist on contemporary electronic sounds for a while now, and is back with his latest EP for Italy’s Nottetempo where he once again allows all of his musical influences to shine through across the five-track ‘Rally della Lana’ EP. It kicks off with this lead track ‘Rising High’ which sets the tone with ethereal chords, wandering bass tones, squelchy acid licks and modulating percussion.

OS Premiere: Lithe & Imitation Therapy - Mondo [Branch Points]

Brussels-based producer, DJ and artist Cleveland, is up next for #62 on our Tape Series. The sound universe of Cleveland, although versatile, is clearly recognisable. Cleveland's productions are subtle with a modern feel built around warm "Left-field" tones and organic rhythms while keeping a dancefloor focus through strangely elegant grooves.

Despite multifaceted input mechanisms (it can come from any direction, from any part of your life), it is nearly impossible to divide into buckets and it piles onto itself, overflowing. I allow myself to escape from daily anxiety during periods of transition: the day's beginning and the day's end. This mix is a collection of songs that I use to help me shift my focus from post-dream-early-morning-internal-reality to the day's stress-laden list of to-dos. Here to take #63 on our Tapes series is ELLES, an artist, DJ and producer from London with a catalogue of releases and appearances on acclaimed labels including Naive, Naivety, Love On The Rocks, Dark Entries and Super Drama. 

ELLES is a resident host on Rinse FM with a show that focuses on spotlighting female, non-binary and queer talent, and is also a regular on East London’s Netil Radio. In DJing as in production her influences are eclectic and far-ranging from pop, experimental and ambient to post-punk, UK garage and acid.

Up next for Tapes #64 is Belgian native, Bad Internet. The La Bonne Musique co-honcho is a newcomer to the London scene, yet in a year's time has firmly settled in hosting some of the city's most exciting line-ups with his imprint and event collective. 

The upstart brand pushes a diverse roster of promising DJ's and producers in venues like The Cause, Venue MOT, Peckham Audio and Dalston Den all the while boasting an eclectic discography as a label and a vision that aims to push healthy narratives within dance music culture. Additionally, his arsenal of acid-laden breakbeats and affinity for finding deep, mind-melting cuts have landed him a recent show on Brussels' Kiosk Radio, and saw him make his first festival appearances at the Seaside Beano and Queen's Yard Summer Party.

For #65 on our Tapes series is the champion of maximalist left-field dance, Sangre Voss.

He’s been pushing sounds out of South-East London since his debut Dance Class EP, released via Third Place in 2019 and now runs the eclectic pseudo pseudo as a platform for the more under-loved and peripheral genres. Having also featured on Rhythm Section and Fabric Records, in 2020 Sangre released Expressions of a Mind in Slumber 2017-19, a collection of ambient compositions woven together with samples of his sleep talking which received support from the likes of Avalon Emerson and Bradley Zero.

London-born now Berlin-based, Amy Dabbs is the daughter of an original Northern Soul DJ and is here to take over Tapes #69. 2022 is fast-becoming a breakthrough year for the multi-genre artist. This year alone Amy Dabbs has dropped releases on Lobster Theremin, launched her own label ‘Dabbs Traxx’ with a huge house EP and collaborated with fellow junglist Coco Bryce on a new project 'Slightly Involved'.

On top of this, Amy Dabbs has just announced another solo EP on Low Battery, coming out end of August, in which she delivers four killer uptempo tracks in her trademark style recently coined 'radiant jungle', and has forthcoming releases on Shall Not Fade, Aus & Time is Now as well as her own imprint Dabbs Traxx.

Following the release of ‘Blue Coat, Red Dress’ earlier this year, kilig steps up for their first EP for UK party and label Origins. Marking the second output for the imprint, ‘Is It Time’ will be available on the 3rd July. 

Holding a residency at London venue Night Tales, kilig draws from the city’s dynamic rave sound, moving away from the previous ambient tones found on their last EP. Leading with the title track, the single is tinged with euphoria as a warm vocal sample echos over shimmering synths. ‘VHS Flex’ and ‘Buckled’ take a darker turn as the sun sets into evening, filled with grittiness and attitude. The EP comes to a close with ‘Bed Test’, a night-to-light record with an endorphin-rich melody. 

Explaining the story and connection with Origins, kilig says, “When kilig started I made a little list of targets and places that I wanted to play, and people that I wanted to send music too. In terms of London, Origins sat pretty high on that list, booking names I genuinely looked up to. I finally got some music in front of the team there and a conversation opened up, but not about playing, instead they wanted to release a record. In the year since that conversation I’ve written a fair few club tracks. The writing process was very different to other stuff I make, maybe evident in the broad range of styles on this EP; my favourite elements of techno, breaks, house and electro, without sitting still for too long.

It feels somewhat ironic that during this time, where clubs can't even open, I would be releasing my first full club-centric EP - posing: Is It Time? 

I couldn’t be more excited to be working with the Origins team, especially in this strange time. I hope you find a suitable Time? to enjoy the release, and hopefully we can enjoy it together soon.” 

Origins launched their label in 2017 with an EP from Tomossini which featured a remix from Hodge and saw support from Anastasia Kristensen during her Boiler Room debut.
