@guavanoise returns to Control Freak for his second full length EP ‘The Dolphins are Back in Venice’ - a collection of 4 playful dancefloor bangers, precision engineered for the club.

Since his Control Freak debut with the ‘Lift’ EP in 2019, Guava has been hard at work in the studio. Following a move to Berlin (and a series of releases on the likes of Banoffee Pies and Holding Hands) he’s back on the label with a new and refined style, retaining the melodic flourishes of his earlier releases whilst turning his focus squarely towards the dancefloor - a perfect fit for our white label series.

As an accomplished session musician, Guava continues to explore the synthesis between digital and analog production and songwriting techniques, innovatively self-sampling his own guitar playing across the record to add a human touch to his airtight productions. On new 4-tracker ‘The Dolphins are Back in Venice’, which includes collaborations with rising UK artists @breakaleeds & @soundsofluxe, Guava draws influence from a broad range of dance music styles in true CF fashion - combining rising, trance-influenced melodies with the syncopated rhythms and bassweight of the UK scene.

Fake news has been rife throughout the pandemic, one example of which being the claim that swans and dolphins had been spotted swimming in Venice's canals. This bogus story (which actually turned out to be sort of true in the end) was the title inspiration for Berlin-based producer @guavanoise's latest EP, 'The Dolphins Are Back In Venice'. Forthcoming on Control Freak Recordings, the club-ready EP finds collaborations with some of the cream of the UK's bass producers, Breaka (listen to his Dummy Mix here), and LUXE. We're premiering EP track 'SZD Orion' here, a track that comes complete with skittering hi hats and cosmic, floating synths - sonically apt for a track that was inspired by flight. "I always think it's essential to start with a track title before making a piece of music," Guava says. "I'd recently been reading about the 1972 Gliding World Championships, in which Polish pilot Jan Wróblewski won flying a glider called the SZD-Orion. I thought it was an excellent title for a piece of music. Most of my tunes are inspired by flight; in the same way, Kraftwerk used the 'Trans Europe Express' to convey a sonic narrative. When I write music, there is always a theme and a story that I'm trying to tell. In this piece, you can hear Jan gliding from cloud to cloud with the bubbling synthesisers representing the turbulence and air moving around him."

@willhofbauer & @sangrevoss team up for ‘Steppe EP’ on Control Freak Recordings, featuring a remix from @discwoman’s @ciel_dj.

London-based Will Hofbauer and Sangre Voss, who’s individual work has seen them appear on labels such as Rhythm Section and Will’s own Third Place imprint, team up for the first time on Control Freak Recordings for the wonky ‘Steppe EP’, picking up early support from Ben UFO, Bradley Zero, and more.

Leading the release, ‘Pumice’ tumbles through rolling low end, crunchy percussion and an eerie breakdown for a high energy start to the A-side. ‘Flundra (Flundra Mix)’ follows with bubbling pads and speaker-rattling subs around a kick-less drop, leading into a shimmering breakdown.

On the flip, ‘June-O’ sees the duo craft a low tempo slugger, peppered with tablas, bells and eagle samples around warped, loopy synthesis. Ciel’s remix of ‘June-O’ takes the B2 spot, adding stuttering percussion, vocal chops, and additional wildlife samples to the mixture to round out the release.

3FD004 brings together two friends from Denmark for a split EP built around UK bass sounds with strong dubstep and UK garage influences.
Easy Touch (JONGPADAWAN’s fresh new ID) starts off the A-side with “Aerosol”—the voodoo-ish windswept voicy lead and the italo-birds are singing along with the sleek 2-step beat and the slow resonating sub. A2 “Vertikal'' speeds up the intensity: the punchy drums combined with the powerful steady bassline are hitting us right where they should while the vocal sample and the stabs are spreading an euphoric groove.
On the flip side, DJ I.D transports us into his dark universe. With a rolling beat, a crispy snare, and roaring bassline stabs, the B1 “Just Let It Happen” inhales and exhales a mysterious energy. To close the EP, the Danish artist is remixing himself, combining the heavy drive of DJ I.D with the hearty touch of DJ Sports.

OS Premiere: James Bangura - Target Velocity [Holding Hands Submerged]

Dublin’s Woozy label premieres on wax with Radial, the debut EP from newcomer Coe (@djcoefroms11). 3 dubstep-informed club weapons b/w a percussive rework from Or:la (@orla_cd).

The title track recalibrates mid-noughties FWD> pressure, suspending us in an E-licked smog before puncturing the rave-lry with thrusting bass stomps and fervorous IDM-adjacent drums for an electro-id crazed stomper. Say (KL Tribute) flexes Coe’s wub mechanics, presenting computerised sound chaos before dropping a half-step hungry wobble fest, mounting the pressure on the ‘floor to a near combustible, skanking peak.

On the flip, 403 slightens the pace for a chugging techno/electro zinger with a faint dembow shell, sounding like the soundtrack to a sinister salsa dance. Or:la’s drum-tastic Radial rework sees us out, conducting an orchestra of percussive pistons akin to a ravey engine room for a mid-tempo grooving killer.
