Since first performing together in 2017, Ciel and CCL have spent years bonding over music, idiosyncratic cinema, and sampling as an art form. After watching the cult-classic movie “Technolust” – where Tilda Swinton plays four different roles in the same film – Ciel and CCL viewed the role of the "genre-fluid" DJ/producer/multi-hyphenate-in contemporary-dance-music in a similar absurdist light. On Tilda’s Goat Stare, the duo sought to create a record that straddles their love of cinematic immersiveness in dubstep, bass music, and deeper shades of prog with the tongue-and-cheek-sassy flair they’re both known for. Taking genre tropes and pastiche-surrealist scenes as a basis for experimentation, the duo’s music leans into each snapshot, making room for playfulness, cinematic surrealism and self-reference; a rotating cast of samples and characters, with a piece of them in each.

Borne Fruits with Amaliah invites Odd Familiar - 29 July 2024

Coming back with the same collaborative and intercultural spirit, the third release of Behua Icára is an EP - VA of reworks from the album “Non Axebo” by Withner FaGo, an activist and rapper from the Shipibo Konibo Xetebo community. Singing in his native language, FaGo narrates myths and legends, as well as stories of cultural and environmental resistance from his community in the central Peruvian Amazon.

Some of these stories emerge from the collective’s imagination and worldview of his community, such as “Chaikonibo,” which refers to enchanted men who protect the jungle; “Non Nete” - Our World - which describes the four indigenous worldviews of the community: Jakon Nete (The Upper World), Non Nete (The Earthly World), Pashin Nete (The Underworld), and Jene Nete (The Water World); and “Mai Yoshin” - Land of Demons - a generational tale from Pucallpa.

“Chaikonibo” has been reimagined by the polyrhythmic talent Crisa, who recreates the mystique of the story with an ensemble of organic Afro-Peruvian percussion. “Non Nete,” originally produced by Toma Kami for the label’s second compilation, now remixed by E-Unity, elevates the narrative, taking us to the rhythmic-astral plane with ascending syncopations. In the case of “Mai Yoshin,” by Argentine producer Mlee, it transports us to Pashin Nete (the underworld) with the calamitous possibilities of drum and bass.

Other stories tackle the daily struggle of the community against the threat of extractive and polluting industries. “Non Mai” - Our Land - a protest song against oil companies and deforestation, has been reinterpreted by Eomac, with a harsh and frantic percussive syntax, making it the perfect soundtrack for frontline defense.

“Koiramenon Ikanwe” - Let’s Take Care of Ourselves - denounces the threat of drug trafficking and the usurpation of the community’s agricultural land for illegal coca leaf cultivation. Produced by Reptile & Supersadfish, a duo from Guadalajara, deconstructs the protest into beautiful fractals between IDM and Jungle.

Finally, “Ea Ninkakanwe” - Listen to Me - narrates the experience of FaGo’s grandfather and his encounter with the depredation of his people’s habitat. Jasmín take, injects the perfect dose of 4/4 in a subversive measure.

Seb Wildblood has mastered the art of crafting subtle, deep but impactful sounds whether working with club settings or headphones in mind. He is a producer, composer, DJ and head of labels including All My Thoughts who is now LA-based and continues to ask probing questions in his work. Never was that truer than with his third album, 2023's 'separation anxiety,' which blurred the worlds of ambient, indie, electronica, jazz and classical into blissed out new musical realms. On his Aus debut, Seb Wildblood eloquently demonstrates his versatility as a producer, with his ability to craft a trio of potent electronica tracks that offer an insight into the diverse landscape of his musical influences. 

First single 'stick it in the freezer', titled after an incident whilst writing in the vast arid deserts of Joshua Tree, when his laptop quite literally overheated and had to be resuscitated by ‘sticking it in the freezer’, opens up with fuzzy and feel-good chord vamps and mellifluous xylophone-style melodies. Hints of yearning vocals tug at the heart strings as the intricate drums drive the compelling mood onwards and upwards. The warm, on-rushing 'kilter:switch' features drum & bass inspired rhythms that are dubbed out to perfection. Daubs of harmonic vocals pepper the groove next to wet claps which keep things organic as you cruise through the cosmos at compelling pace alongside the acid-fused synth line. High speed, techno-leaning closer 'FLUSH' is a colourful blend of bubbling neon synth lines, wispy pads and supple, rubbery drums. Atmospheric vocalisations are smeared into the dynamic mix to make for something with a fresh, futuristic edge and plenty of rich sound designs.

We've been angling for an RA Podcast from Two Shell ever since they shifted from lowkey producers into hijinx hackers rummaging around the dance music mainframe.

Now that we've bagged a mix from clubland's premier iconoclasts, it still poses more questions than it answers: Was this pre-recorded? What's the deal with that AI voice guiding the set along? How can we be sure it was even them? Hang on: is "even them" even them?

What we can tell you is that the duo floored RA's stage at Horst Arts & Music 2024. Few genres were left untarnished as they veered off-piste on a thrill seeking mission toward breaking the 170+ BPM speed barrier. No tracklist, so ID crew over to you (Alex Gaudino makes an appearance, you can have that one as a freebie.) True to form, Two Shell always do it their own way.
