When going into this, I wanted to make something that wasn't just some drums and a melody repeating. I thought "what better way to do that than to mix genres?". As soon as I implemented the tempo-shifts I knew that this was it. The beat turned out to become more of an experience than just a trap beat. Hopefully you'll feel the same way. I composed this soundtrack for the Adam Audio Competition 2020. The rules were simple: 30 seconds long, I could use any sound (without violating copyrights) with the purpose of telling a story based on "Nighthawks", this breathtaking masterpiece painted by Edward Hopper in 1942.
Here is a brief description of my soundtrack choices:
[CONTEXT] It's late at night. The streets are empty and the city lights are off. Just a few weeks ago Pearl Harbor was brutally attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. Since than, everyone is paranoid by the eventuality of another attack.
[SOUND EFFECTS] Inside "Phillies" Bar there are only few silent customers. The barman is patiently preparing their drinks. On the radio you can hear the news about the attack. In the background there is a clock sound giving us a sense of rhythm.
[TIME SIGNATURE] There are 7 stools in front of the counter, so 7/8 time signature was an obvious choice, emphasising the feeling of incompleteness.
[HARMONY] The soundtrack is in the scale of Ebm, I liked the idea of using all the black keys of the keyboard to give a sense of darkness. The piano never plays the i chord, it never brings us "home". That gentleman is sitting on the second stool, so the piano plays a constant high Eb note always on the second beat, reminding us of where "home" is.
[STRUCTURE] The soundtrack is divided in 4 sections. In the first 3 sections we have a feeling of build-up, emphasised also by the action strings playing in 7/8, which reminds us of a military march. The build-up goes louder and louder until arriving on the climax where everything suddenly stops playing, everything but that high Eb piano note in the last 4th section, leaving us with a final sense of "home", nowhere to be found.
