Let My Prayer Arise

His Beatitude and a delegation for the Holy Synod of Bishops including  Bishop David of Sitka and Alaska, Bishop Paul of Chicago,  and Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa recently attended the 90th Annual Convention of the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America in Chicago, Illinois. The fellowship itself and many of its members are themselves stewards of the OCA. One of those stewars is long time choir director at met tikhons home parish of sspeter and Paul, one of the conventions hosts. We took the opportunity to ask long-time choir director John Sutko about his recollections of Metropolitan Tikhon's first visit to St Peter and Paul.

On Wednesday, November 13, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the feast of Saint John Chrysostom, and commemorated the seventh anniversary of the election of His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy His Eminence, Archbishop Michael of New York and New Jersey, Secretary of the Holy Synod, read the following proclamation of the Holy Synod announcing the anniversary celebrations for the Canonization of Saint Herman of Alaska, and the reception of the Tomos of Autocephaly.

In October of 2019 I had the opportunity to visit with His Beatitude Metropolitan Theodosius. During our wide ranging discussion His Beatitude shared a few memories of receiving the Tomos of Autocephaly at the Holy Trinity - Saint Sergius Lavra outside of Moscow.

The Mission of the Orthodox Church in America, the local autocephalous Orthodox Church, is to be faithful in fulfilling the commandment of Christ to “Go into all the world and make disciples of all Nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all [things that He has] commanded” so that all people may be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth:

To preach, in accordance with God’s will, the fullness of the gospel of the Kingdom to the peoples of North America and to invite them to become members of the Orthodox Church.

To utilize for her mission the various languages of the peoples of this continent.

To be the body of Christ in North America and to be faithful to the tradition of the Holy Orthodox Church.

To witness to the truth, and by God’s grace and in the power of the Holy Spirit, to reveal Christ’s way of sanctification and eternal salvation to all.
