I'm In The House (disquiet0621)

This track was mainly composed in November 2019 - 4 years ago.
The music was inspired by the character Markus Cheng by the author Heinrich Steinfest. This one-armed detective, a Viennese of Chinese descent, is the main character of several of his novels.

The Disquiet Junto Project encouraged me to rediscover and publish old and forgotten tracks.

On Some Empty Shore - disquiet0621

Thanks Marc for this  - it is quite useful to get one to review forgotten files that didn't quite make it anywhere.   I was thinking to name this "No light for the jealous night", but it didn't quite fit the theme, so I named it "Night Leftover".  I found this scrap and realized why I scrapped it.  It was too long, and it is still too long for which I apologize, but shortening it was very difficult.  Nevertheless, I still like it and wanted to get it out there. The instruction was "Think about how a shadow might be expressed in sound.". Here in my recording I feature the reverb channel from a recently recorded guitar piece. In order to make it sound like a shadow I used an envelope follower that would modulate the sends of the signal feeding into the reverb. This has as an effect that the original sound appears to reflect into the reverb. I also pitched the resulting signal down by an octave so it sounds more dark.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
