From Oscar Brown Jr's, 'THEN AND NOW' CD 

This is the second recording OBJ made of his lyric to Mongo Santamaria's music.  AFRO BLUE has been recorded by a who's who list of artists over decades. Its lyrical version by Brown is found in jazz Real Book folios and is a standard jazz tune.

This version is recorded on Oscar's THEN AND NOW CD on the Weasel Disc indie label, in 1995.  
Early in his songwriting career, Brown would ask composer's if he could put a lyric to a previously instrumental song.  When he approached the Adderley brothers about a tune they played on the bandstand at the Sutherland Ballroom in Chicago, Nat told him it was inspired by men working on a chain gang near their Florida home where they grew up. Hence the title: WORK SONG.
