After a long break the Oscillate Mix Series is back with a powerful contribution by Juba, British-Nigerian DJ, radio host and documentary maker. As part of the London-based party series and collective BOKO! BOKO! Juba has started DJing in 2015 and has been building a strong reputation as a terrific selector combining her interest in music from Africa and the African diaspora with contemporary club sounds and classics - in short: everything that makes you want to dance immediately. 

Recently Juba finished her work on The Assurance Podcast which is based on her 2020 documentary on the struggle and chances of female artists in Nigeria called Assurance. Especially the topics of female empowerment within the music industry, intersectionality and the junctions of music, society and political developments have been a focus of her multifaceted body of work. Juba easily combines her political interests, her love for music and dance with her academic background in history and languages. 

This mix is an energetic blend of “amapiano, afrobeats, baile funk, gqom, techno and funky house” mixed in a fast pace to make sure that your body does not stop moving from start to finish.

Momenteel is Half Queen op tour en deze mix is een accumulatie van invloeden die ze de afgelopen maand heeft genoten. Ze houdt er van om te werken met verschillende BPM’s, manieren van overvloeien en het verbuigen van genres.

Next in the series we welcome Zambian DJ and producer SHE Spells Doom.

SHE Spells Doom is an Electronic music project created by Zambian producer, Wamya Tembo. It draws inspiration from a number of his influences, such as: 80s Sci-Fi/Horror movies, (Congolese) Rhumba/Soukous, Gqom and early 2000s Rap production, which he mixes with House and Techno elements he picked up from time living in Geneva, Switzerland. His style can best be described as hazy but driving - usually seeking to create a visceral atmosphere without neglecting the dancefloor by combining trademark airy synth-lines with heavy drum programming. The past few years have seen him release work on labels such as Creme Records, Monstart, Sweat Equity, HTS, All Centre and Tresor. He has also dabbled in contemporary art projects - FELTWORLD, his art installation which was exhibited at BKhz Studio & Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa during a residency with the Fak'ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival in 2019 and in 2021 he scored "Nobody Is Okay" - a collaborative art installation between Swiss artist, Andy Storchenegger + Zambian poet/writer, Marita Banda - on show at Grosse Biennale 2021 and in 2022 at the National Art Gallery in Livingstone, Zambia.

For this mix, I tried to capture the frantic energy of the kind of week I was having when I made this mix. 
Felt a bit all over the place but mostly excited about a few changes coming up, musically + w/ life in general.
Expect lots of tempo switches, swooshes + rushing drums from some new favourites + artists who have inspired me/the S.S.D. project up till this point.

TM002: SHE Spells Doom

It’s Latin Heritage Month, an annual celebration of the cultures and contributions of Latin American and Hispanic communities. 

We’ll be commemorating the occasion with a series of mixes spotlighting regional styles and music traditions past and present, presented by a selection of contemporary artists. 

Today’s mix, which lands on Mexican Independence Day (16 September), comes from Mexico City-based juke producer Sonido Berzerk. Coming in at just shy of 90 minutes, his offering touches on all shades of club music and makes for a pretty irresistible listen.

Coming through the buzzing scene in South Florida, Nick León cut his teeth as a producer working with local talent and some of the region’s biggest rap artists including Denzel Curry and Robb Bank$. It was these collaborations that helped bring his name to a global audience and giving him the confidence and platform to explore his own sound. In 2016, Nick released his well-received debut album Profecía and has since gone on to release for Mexican label NAAFI, Space Tapes Miami and most recently Dengue Dengue Dengue’s newly launched imprint kebrada. Nick also collaborated with fellow Miami producers INVT for a brilliant collaborative album PASEO which they started at the beginning of the pandemic.
