Soulseek started mid sumer 2021 together with IRL & DJ Cole Evelev - we wanted to create a party specifically for (outsider) dance music: hazy ambient, singing sine waves, calibrated shimmers, crushing bass drops, layered textures with crispy vocal loops provoking us to dance but also challenge us - leading us to a higher place which is...foggier? You get it. We invited some of our favorite DJs to this series since: James K, Pontiac Streator, CZ Wang, Deep Creep, Beta Librae and of course that one time when DJ Fart in the Club threatened national security with her jaw-dropping stunt at IRL...! We are back Jan 22nd after taking a small break - cant wait to welcome Moma Ready (1st time at IRL!), Beta Librae (!!!) & Inversion Table :)

Ayebatonye is an experienced DJ, radio host, artist and Founder/Creative Director of the DIY arts and community platform Irregular Fit. Her involvement in the electronic music scene in Sydney and beyond is multifaceted and deeply rooted in empowering QTBIPOC/Bla(c)k artists and audiences through her work as a DJ, social/political commentator, educator and steady figure of Australia’s nightlife. Her DJ sets are not tied to a specific genre but always have one thing in common: a great appreciation for afro beats, electrifying percussion and a vibrant energy that is reflective of Ayebatonye’s contagiously positive and captivating personality. Via her platform Irregular Fit she is helping members of communities of colour to gain access to music ecologies, equipment and knowledge via DJ workshops, community events  and skill sharing opportunities. Irregular Fit has been supported by The Red Rattler Theatre, Beats by Dre, City of Sydney, Inner West Council and Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre among others.   

Community building has always played an important role for Ayebatonye as a motivation for her work, a coping mechanism and a form of resistance to the dominant culture. Through her work she wants to bring joy to herself and the people surrounding her but also release some of the emotional, physical and mental pressure that comes with the fact that this world is not necessarily made for her as a queer Black woman of Nigerian heritage.

At the moment Ayebatonye is working on a lot of mixes, preparing for the upcoming festival season in Australia and some commissioned playlists for the Art Gallery of NSW as part of the Mardi Gras Queer Art After Hours as well as more DJ workshops for Irregular Fit.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community:
It helps me a lot to always be mindful of why I DJ, because every now and then I can feel a little burnt out! So for me personally I know that its my way of connecting with others and sharing myself – and really an act of service. So, I try not to ever forget that DJing is an act of self-care for myself - and keeping that in mind is such a good antidote to things like negative self-talk!
