Melbourne dark synth heavyweights The Night Terrors emerge from
the depths of the studio to launch their brand new double A-side 12″
Monster / Lasers for Eyes on OSCL Records.
Featuring vintage horror synth, the haunting theremin melodies of
Miles Brown (student of Russian theremin queen Lydia Kavina), and
the powerhouse drumming of Damian Coward (Heirs, Love Like…
Electrocution), The Night Terrors offer a mind-melting mix of dark
synth magic, thunderous dreamscapes and other-worldly electronica.
Since the release of their debut long-player Back to Zero in 2009, The
Night Terrors have taken their theremin-fueled synthscapes across
the world, supporting the likes of Goblin, Hawkwind, Lou Reed, Black
Mountain, Serena-Maneesh, Melt-Banana, & Bardo Pond.
Upon return to Australia the band retreated to studios in Tasmania and
Melbourne to work on tracks for their follow-up album.
Monster / Lasers for Eyes is the first glimpse of The Night Terrors’
new material – moving beyond the post-prog stylings of their earlier
work to focus on a broader universe of warped psychedelic electronics
and the darker corners of the dancefloor.
The 12″ features remixes by Berlin Italo-disco legend Antoni Maiovvi
(repaying the favour for The Night Terrors’ 2011 remix of his single
Murderfunk) and Australian synth legend Ash Wednesday (The Metronomes,
The Models, Einstürzende Neubauten). Also included are previously
unreleased live favourites Meteor Shower and Somnambulist.

Brothers Adam and Sam Sherry form minimalist two piece A Dead
Forest Index. Originally from Auckland/London, A Dead Forest Index
formed in 2009 and are currently based in Melbourne.
A Dead Forest Index create a sound ambitious in contrast and depth.
Drawing on simple yet dynamic elements, leaving sparse but deliberate
structures & washes of sound that centre around the voice. Their
songs draw from a wide range of influences such as William Blake,
Taraf De Haidouks, Scott Walker and Arvo Part.
A Dead Forest Index released their first work, ‘Antique EP’ in early
2011. Expanding on their minimal, layered live performance, ‘Antique’
brings to life a sound that is strikingly original and sincere.
This collection will be re-released on 10” vinyl in July by OSCL in
Australia and Denovali in Europe with two new tracks included. They
are currently working on their first full length album due out towards
the end of the year.

sparse, audacious guitar chords… They are at one time a chugging indie pop band;
at another turn they blend Gothic rhythms and Eastern European symphonies; and

‘I don’t feel like I thought I would.’
After commencing as a two piece continually at war with itself in 2006,
operations gradually escalated via constantly varying personnel and
equipment arrangements revolving around brothers Simon and David,
before settling into a hardened 5-piece collective in 2009.
Cocks Arquette’s soul destroying maximalism quickly solidified – their
‘thing’ became steeped in terrifying catharsis and meditative pattern repetition
at maximum volume; wild and loose in the same shapes over and
over again, order out of chaos and all that. A microcosm of this constant
expansion and inevitable capitulation is best captured in the damaged
electronics and five guitar attack of album closer ‘Then Leave’, recorded
live with no overdubs, as was the entire recording.
‘Having spent a little time wrapping my head around their debut, I can say with confidence
that there’s something about Cocks Arquette. I’ve weighed it up and considering
it, more than anything, I like that there’s nothing contrived or fashioned here. It’s also
intense without necessarily trying to be, primarily through being sinewy, angular, carnal,
masculine punk rock; Cocks Arquette seem caught at an urban crossroad where grind
and free-jazz breathe all over the gumption of late Eighties weirdos Butthole Surfers,
peppered with the desperation of Slint. Despite this statement, it must be said that
Cocks truly don’t sound much like anything else I know, or, their unwashed vibes aren’t
common to me elsewhere.
I’ve read the passage in the liner notes and talked it out with head Cock Simon Karis
and it’s apparent that the impetus for this record was to vent about dim days, anxious
times and the people who don’t turn out to be who you thought they were, all with a
sort of pissed-off introspection. The existence of such emotions is clear here and like
the best death metal of my youth or punk rock of my adolescence, Cocks Arquette
‘say’ nothing discernible but manage to expel plenty through a pure and unadulterated
sound. This is the stuff.’

ASCETIC: - I Burn

After a couple of years on the bench, Blacklevel Embassy return with a third album of light-switch, epilepsy-inducing face melters. Hair trigger tight and sharp as an executioner’s sword, “NEW VETERAN” lops away at conventional structures but allows curious mutations to grow freely in the stumps. Pale bodies with wildly colourful distorted heads for songs in a group hug / cluster fuck of a record that is at once a tense but exhilarating listen. Recorded by ARIA Award Winning producer JonBoyRock at Megaphon Studios and later mixed at the Chinese Brothel in Sydney, New Veteran was birthed and finally delivered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service.
The title track is the slaughtered sign post for the rest of the record. The dichotomy sits perfectly as a bi-polar manifesto, a mission statement of intent to conform to norms whilst blowing them apart from within their own machine. The honed and familiar components are all there, but they possess less corruptible joints. Those parts that have survived the cull are designed exclusively to pulverise or cut. What is immediately apparent is that the vocals have been elevated in the ranks to a position rarely attained in angular rock n’ roll. Their integration is generally a secondary consideration with many bands of the ilk proclaiming their irrelevance and subsequent relegation to the shameful shadows of the mix. From the outset on New Veteran the vocals are right on and belted like an insubordinate.
Old Revolt continues this theme, insanely tuneful while culminating in an apex mantra of “Rock and Roll has been and gone”. Viking Tattoo envelopes itself like a norse war chant. Rollicking and atomising. The drumming of new stickman Joel Ellis hypnotising in its rolling onslaught. Tony revolves around sheet glass guitar work in ever tightening spirals until everything shatters. You Should Build Yourself A Deck displays hooks with deeper throats and wider barbs. It sets a disjointed and fractured tone and descends into a solitary rimshot rumba. “Bill Hunter was a tremendous loss to smoking booze and drinking pot.” Gary is a lurching, apelike bastard dragging its cro-magnon arm hammers across the thin ice of the 90’s. Weng Weng Is A Secret Agent and the kind of clandestine operation that sheds light on why Blacklevel Embassy get the call up every time Future Of The Left roll into Australia. Spies of a feather….and when combined with the blistering end times of Midnight Siblings, Neighbour Ray & I Keep Making Tiny Men, New Veteran ends with a cataclysmic big bang.
