The sixth FIBER podcast is the premiere of Urkelle, the pseudonym under which Steve Mensink will be releasing his deeper, more experimental work. This mix proves that Steve can easily vear away from the 125 bpm rut and it takes you on a journey through an obscure spheric soundscape of pulsating sub-basses, laidback beats and magical melodies; much in contrast to his more house oriented work he has been showcasing at festivals and clubs, which he’ll be mixing under his other pseudonym “Frits Wentink” in the future.
Steve grew up in Nijmegen, where he began producing at an early age and like a real ‘Nijmegenaar’ befits, he was a regular at the Planet Rose parties hosted by Darko Esser at Doornroosje. As he began producing at a more serious level, he moved to Utrecht to study audio design and musicology. The skills he attained during his study can be heard in this podcast, which has been composed solely of his own unreleased material. Incorporated in his mix are melodic influences, dating from early 20th century French piano music, such as edits of “Louange à l’Ëternite de Jésus” by Olivier Messiaen and fragments of the work by Maurice Ravel. Next to Steve’s edits of these French masters, the podcast has been enriched with vocals by Loes Jongerling.
Aside from producing music, Mensink also builds his own midi controllers. These devices have beautiful wooden casings and are portrayed as still lifes on his website. The handmade controllers serve not only as a technological aid for music production, but also as a visual enhancement. A good example is the controller of which Steve chose the illustration as artwork for this podcast. The positioning of the buttons leads to a chaotic pattern that suits the granular synthesis technique his controller(s) are intended for. As such the controllers are a guide/model to understanding Steve's music.

Geminga is a dance/pop formation, made up of JP Pino and Claudia Cathérine. Their new album BIPOLAR displays a mixture of different musical styles, such as Triphop, Disco, Jazz, Soul, Funk and Dance, with a lead roll for voice and guitar.

Geminga’s music defies categorisation. The songs lead us through dreamy moods, influenced by Pink Floyd, Everything But The Girl and Portishead, to then shake you awake with funky discobeats, reminiscent of Prince, Moloko and Chic. To name a few.

Geminga’s debut album ‘Bipolar’ is out now. For this album they collaborated with producer and bass player Jeroen Kurpershoek. The artwork was designed by the artist Eefje Bouwkamp.

Central to the album is the taoistic Yin-Yang principle. Everything has two sides that complement each other, and cannot exist seperately. We are modest and arrogant, expressive and shy, chique and cheap, soft and hard. Everything is bound to the dynamic of this principle. The album carries you on a wave from up to down, and back.

The vibe seems just right as we immerse our souls into a world of precarious direction and poor leadership... Perhaps the grass is greener on the other side... The other side being, in this case, Mars!

Micha de Valck aka Falck is a very welcome member of the Mind Field family and this Ep was kept on the back burner for some time. While advancing his sound into other directions, Mind Field's Label Manager, Nicholas D (Nick D'Ombrain) was torn when Falck sent him a whole lot of new material because he knew that there was something special in the inner workings of this EP. Something quite timeless. So it is important that these 4 gems do in fact see the light of day as an EP - as they were intended.

Featuring Space Agent, Eclipse, The Lost Gull and the more instrumental Applepie, there is something in this Ep to get the hair standing and those Goosebumps out in full swing. The percussion is kept fairly minimal and simple, while the melodies ascend our thoughts into alternative layers of the Earth's atmospheres...
