FAUVE - Nuits Fauves (TEEMID Edit)

I've got a very lovely piano piece for you this morning from the ever-lovely Moderna imprint, which continues to scour the hidden corners of the scene to bring you some of the most heartfelt music. This one comes from the emerging [and pretty young] Augsburg-based (Germany) composer Linus Alberg, offering us his label debut, titled Elements. On this collection of eight tracks, Alberg shares his sentimentality, initially inspired by the changing of the seasons but somehow evoking something else entirely, at least in me, as if uncovering a buried key to a forgotten memory. His incredible compositional musicality is only surpassed by the execution, whereby remarkably gentle melodies effortlessly flutter in the curated space, held together by the solid bass, frequency-rich harmonium, and occasional echoes of the breathy trumpet, played here by Matthias Lindermayr. Oh, but then, there is that Yamaha upright that carries a flavour so lush of its own. Here, Alberg is able to ring out the textural tone shifts with his exceptional, flawless control of the instrument, painting wide pastel landscapes with a gorgeous sonic palette. And yeah, okay, I am jealous. I'm jealous that I'm no longer in my twenties, making music as beautiful as this. But that is okay. I'm delighted. I'm happy to sidestep and listen and offer this space to a lovely new voice.

This is the fourth and final track from my new album Notes On Belonging coming out on 27th October 2017! This track is the place where I find space and meaning in the form of repetition of three notes. It explores the notion of belonging to a place, physically and spiritually, and a sense of journeying to a place called home. It's both tinged with joy and a sense of longing, of nearly being there but not quite yet. The track explores a sort of counterpoint, where instruments go in and out of phase to emphasise this nearness of things. They delicately tow the line of independent improvisation to colliding in pattern, most noticeable at the end of the track. I wanted to explore themes of indiviuality and freedom in the piece with the hope that inevitably we'd join forces at times. His shimmering rework makes remarkable use of the song's swelling atmospheres and sparse minimalist instrumentation, building the song up to a riveting crescendo. Originally taken from Adam's 'Voyages By Starlight' EP, Boysen's thoughtful rework breathes new life into the moving, pastoral ballad.

Written and recorded over a period of more than two years, “Paraphrases” is a collection of chamber music compositions performed, recorded and layered through numerous recording sessions in a small room in northern Germany near the Baltic Sea.

Christoph Berg scores the history of eight narrow worlds, carved only from wood – violin, piano and double bass. The initial composition “Quiet times at the library” defines the tone, but the album also sees many shades; the solo piece “Poems written by an old (prepared) piano”, the crow haunted field recordings of “Interlude” and reverent remixes provided by Yasuhiko Fukuzono (aus) and P Jørgensen specially for the CD edition.

The direct intimacy of the material is a stark counterpoint to the sweeping cinematic grandeur and electronic sound manipulation of previous releases as Field Rotation, and is also the logical progression from 2011 releases ‘Acoustic Tales’ and ‘And Tomorrow I Will Sleep”; the former a tribute to literature, and the latter a paean to hibernation after exhaustion. Completed in the brief escapes allowed by gaps in graduate study, “Paraphrases” is a recontextualisation of the experience of exhaustion, written in other words.

Mastered with precise weight by Ian Hawgood, the 250 run limited edition 180gm vinyl is packaged inside heavy gatefold four panel sleeves, wrapped within an A1 double-sided poster. The package also includes a double sided 12 x 12 hand numbered print along with a hand numbered embossed letter-pressed CD with fold-out booklet featuring striking photography by Aela Labbe. Extras as always will include scent, card and download code containing audio and PDFs. The album is a treasure of both talent and soul, and the extraordinary packaging from the label and considered art design by Ian Hazeldine reflects the classic nature of the material.

Oskar Schuster feat. Possimiste - Stjernen

Oskar Schuster is a German composer and artist, living in Berlin. His songs without words evoke a fairytale-world, strange and surreal. A world full of blurry images of the past; of childhood memories and characters from children’s books; of clicking and ticking clocks and ever-looping music boxes, of far-away-lands, far-away-seas, far-away-skies, far-away-everythings. At times reminiscent of Yann Tiersen's Amélie, his music is still very distinct, arising from a mixture of various influences including experimental electronic music (Aphex Twin, Pogo), the minimalist folk-pop of Beirut, the ethereal and mystical sounds of Sigur Rós as well as classical piano music by Robert Schumann and Frédéric Chopin. As a true self-made artist, he not only plays all the instruments and produces the music by himself, but also creates his own music videos and designs most of the artwork by himself. 

In 2011, he released his debut album, Dear Utopia, followed 2014 by Sneeuwland and 2015 by Tristesse Télescopique which he managed to produce with the help of successful crowdfunding campaigns. Abandoning the traditional full length album format, he continues to regularely release new EPs and singles, such as Singur in 2016, Záhada in 2017 and Maribel in 2018.
