A Strangely Isolated Place, 9128.live
Los Angeles, California

ASIP is the acronym and DJ name of Ryan Griffin, founder of the A Strangely Isolated Place label and the 9128.live collective listening radio station. Founded in 2008 as a blog, A Strangely Isolated Place has now come to be described as a record label for ‘Ambient adjacent' music and this ethos can be heard as a source of inspiration within many of ASIP’s DJ sets. A Strangely Isolated Place also plays host to the long running isolated mix series, with DJ’ing being a primary source of driving creativity and inspiration for ASIP.

Often choosing to focus on strict concepts that highlight various angles of the music he enjoys, ASIP has gone so far as to reinterpret the KLF's Chill Out, cut-up classic Trance Loops, and depict the three stages of sleeping within his previous mixes online. However, ASIP live DJ sets are often more free-flowing; traversing many styles, and focus on the attentive side of Ambient music: lean-in, emphasizing narrative, versus the background music you come to expect with Ambient. 

Founded in the UK, but since relocating to the USA in 2013, ASIP and the label HQ can now be found hiding in Los Angeles.

Based in Potsdam, Germany, Alex is a music enthusiast and cassette collector with Estonian roots. Intrigued by tropical mysterious sounds, electronic soundscapes, and world music, Echo & Rauschen explores the realm of organic sounds in combination with deep ambient electronic vibes. Ryan's ear for label curation and his mixes under the ASIP moniker have really inspired us over the years, so it's exciting to get an insight into what he's been listening to lately.

Some words by Ryan about the mix:

"This mix came together over a 2/3 month period, as I've spent a large part of the summer between Oregon and California with family and haven't had much dedicated time to focus on a mix. Normally I approach mixes more conceptually, but this one came to life organically in pieces, over time. In hindsight, the mix reflects a specific period in time for me and a lot of my life musically over the past few months. From the unfortunate passing of Brian McBride (Stars of The Lid) and revisiting those brilliant albums nearly every evening; anticipating the new Lord of The Isles album after his standout isolatedmix this year; our latest label addition from Mary Yalex; music being sent to my inbox from new artists; and of course, a couple of upcoming ASIP releases that are keeping me busy lately. The Observatory - ASIP

For the next edition of Monument Waves, we are honored to welcome ASIP, which is the DJ name of Ryan Griffin, founder of the legendary A Strangely Isolated Place label and the 9128.live radio station. 

Here ASIP presents a stunning mix featuring ambient, electronica, IDM, dub techno and more, where almost every track has been turned into a loop to bring to life the idea of "waves" as loops - continuous unfolding of repetitive patterns.

“Taking inspiration from the podcast series’ title, I aimed to create a mix that focused on
repetition and layers, as if staring out to sea watching blankets of waves roll in from
miles out; changing in intensity, but forever calming in their unbound repetition.”

Monument Waves 002 : ASIP

This is the 117th Ambient Sessions presented by Deep Electronics. These monthly released sessions brings you the best and the most diversity Ambient music can offer. This month Daniel Filipovic takes us back with his mixtape to the Southern Lights Label night @ Arkaoda, Berlin where the set was recorded.


About: 
Daniel Filipovic is the founder and co-curator of Naarm (Melbourne) and Amsterdam label, Southern Lights. Southern Lights exists to nurture emerging and established artists that push the boundaries of dark and elemental music by providing a platform to release high quality, thoughtfully designed physical editions of recordings and digital works.
As a DJ, his sets are a reflection of how he curates the label: taking in all things esoteric and forward thinking; from ambient, drone and dub-infused sounds through to raw, hypnotic and experimental techno.

About the set:
The mix is an all-vinyl set recorded at the Southern Lights Label Night held at Arkaoda, Berlin in March 2024, supporting live sets from Mattia Onori and Katatonic Silentio.

A tender mosaic captured in soft focus, courtesy of The Something Something's Will Oirson. Recorded during the final act of ISOTOOP's "The Mind-Altering Experiment," an exploratory event which traced the course of an entire summer's evening, Will's morning call is a testament to shared experience, a confirmation of combined existence. Each selection is given room to breathe, space to occupy, and time to endure. It's impossible not to yearn for more.
