Since he made his debut three years ago with sun-soaked first album Warm Nights, Reuben Vaun Smith has grown and evolved as an artist. His aims, objectives and musical output have changed, too – something that’s evident from the opening bars of his third full-length, Da Cuckoo Ya Ya, which also marks his first appearance on Californian institution Ubiquity Records. 

Whereas the summery and colourful Warm Nights was the result of time spent teaching himself music and production, not to mention over a year of daily recording, Da Cuckoo Ya Ya was recorded in less than two months. It not only showcases Smith’s sharpened musicianship and his growing love of Eastern exoticism and wide-eyed psychedelia, but also features guest spots from friends (and fellow Leeds locals) Sakura Murakami (a guitarist who also featured on 2021’s Sounds From The Workshop album), bassist Nial Deravairere (on deliciously dubbed-out and hazy closing cut ‘Beams’) and vocalist Lucy Saddler. 

While it shares some sonic similarities with its predecessors – not least a greater reliance on live instrumentation and plenty of audible nods towards Malian musical culture – Smith’s new set is his most confident and dynamic yet, with the Leeds-based producer consciously moving closer to the dancefloor whilst polishing his productions further and showcasing all he’s learned to date. 

Smith sets the tone with funky and flash-fried opener ‘Da Cuckoo Ya Ya’, a superbly summer-ready statement of intent rich in flanged psych-funk guitar licks, vintage synth riffs and loose-limbed drums, before subtly doffing a cap to highlife on the peak-time-ready dancefloor celebration of ‘Mama’. By the time ‘Oumbadougou’ settles in to its stride in a wave of effects-laden guitars, polyrhythmic breakbeats, lilting violin lines and dusky early evening textures, you’ll be hooked. 

The album is peppered with smile-inducing highlights, from the kaleidoscopic nu-disco/Afro-disco fusion of bona fide dancefloor jam ‘The Waxing Gibbous Moon’, the synth-sporting gorgeousness of ‘Mali’ and the explosion of keys solos, psych guitars and nods to Middle Eastern musical culture that is driving club cut ‘Milano Caravan’, to the hot-stepping, piano-sporting bounce of ‘No Puedo Esperar’ and the immersive, percussive and vividly colourful ‘Help Me Ride’. Then there’s triumphant closing cut ‘Beams’, a chugging, Afro-cosmic masterpiece of the sort more often associated with Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi. 

There’s no needlessly clever concept here, just ten killer cuts, expertly imagined and executed, that perfectly encapsulate the evolution and quality of Reuben Vaun Smith’s attractive trademark sound. It’s the sound of an artist who is not only comfortable in his sonic skin, but also laying the foundations of a long and fruitful musical career.

‘Building Up’ by Enduro Disco is built on a solid foundation of nu disco texture but with a chunkier house edge.
On ‘High Energy’ by Mexican producer Levantine, distorted kicks suck at a tense synth arpeggio while in the distance a dramatic melody plays amidst a church-like reverb.
Barcelona’s Baldo revisits the gorgeously colorful ‘Dream Of You’ from Istanbul’s rising talent Zeynep Erbay, taking it on one hell of a trip.
NEAT’s ‘DYR’ is a beautiful, delicate, unhurried gem of a track, dripping in sensuality. Shimmering percussion and delayed claps lay a foundation atop sorrowful sustained organ-esque pads.
‘Fantasia’ by Kadosh builds slowly through a dramatic minor key bass line and shimmering metallic fuzz to suddenly explode into life with a stunning, sorrowful main riff that rocks a distorted 8-bit electro vibe.
Madrid duo Depaart rock the slick, acidic cut ’And You’ with a real air of sophistication about it.
Studio Barnhus affiliates Måns Glaeser (from swedish Off The Meds) and Basement Space team up for ‘Hollywood Cole’ - a cute breakbeat track peppered with old skool rap & diva vocals, shimmering electric piano chords and a thick, undulating bassline.
Marvin & Guy up the tempo for Joyce Muniz & Theus Mago’s track ’Balin Bali’ to a pacey house bounce and lay on some gentle electro textures.
London duo Make A Dance go deeper on their rework for Budakid’s ‘Milestones’, building through gated snips of the vocal, pulsing pads, Latin snare patterns and subtle bleep riffs and delays to reach a heady, hypnotic place.
Fabrizio Mammarella does the damage on his version of ‘Nechama’ by Sandhog, teasing us slowly with ticking techno percussion that ebbs and flows, he gradually reveals the synth chords amidst giant snare hits and pulsing cymbal rides.
Atlanta-based Sejva closes the compilation with ‘We Only Want To Be Bad’, flexing Hi-NRG muscle with its off-beat bassline, snazzy melodies and campy vocals. A masterclass in retro revivalism.
All in all this is a great eclectic dance compilation.

In case these names don’t ring a bell, use a so called search engine and check their body of work. Someone told me that there is absolutely no other doing what they be doing. Anyway, back to the EP. Mikesh and Filburt did some cleaning up on their hidden hard drive. They found some unfinished gems which they polished until it became what you are about to hear. Next to the remastered classics ‚Gold Snake‘ and ‚Come on‘ we offer you three brand new originals. And let us tell you that these tunes go down smooth like milk and honey. The combination of Filburt’s dancefloor experience and Mikesh’s pop-appeal is undeniable. As one half of British twosome Earthboogie, Nicola Rose Robinson has spent the last few years offering up joyously tropical musical fusions on Leng. She continues to explore and blur those boundaries with her new solo project, Tigerbalm, whose debut single “Ello Koko” is as colourful a concoction as you’d expect.

Robinson first started work on the track while travelling in Lombok, Indonesia, drawing influence from her humid surroundings, the country’s distinctive musical culture, and the far-sighted blend of aural inspirations. On returning to the UK, she enlisted the assistance of Alex Searle (bass and lead guitar) and Patrick Dawes (percussion) to complete her musical vision.

Opening with an infectious rhythm rich in disco drums and ear-catching hand percussion patterns, “Ello Koko” brilliantly blends flash-fried tropical funk guitars, squelchy electro synths, weighty dub disco bass, warm electric piano chords and sampled Indonesian vocal snippets. The resultant dancefloor-focused workout is simultaneously low-slung, jaunty and kaleidoscopic: it’s as impressive a solo debut as we’ve heard for some time.

As you’d expect, Robinson’s original version comes backed with some similarly inspired remixes. The first revision comes courtesy of rising stars Flamingo Pier, a collective whose glorious fusions of electrofunk, disco, Latin and African rhythms regularly explore similar sonic territory as “Ello Koko”. Their take on the track is powered forwards by an elastic synth bassline, Nile Rodgers style disco guitars, NYC boogie style lead lines and Patrick Dawes’ superb percussion. It’s a summer-fresh treat.

To complete the package, Razor ‘N’ Tape co-founder and Escort band member JKriv sticks a rocket up the backside of “Ello Koko” and turns it into an unfeasibly heavy dub disco treat. Alex Searle’s bassline and Dawes’ heady percussion dominate the mix, with Robinson’s dancing melodies stretching out atop the weighty grooves. Throw in some well-placed, delay-laden breakdowns and you have a version tailor made for celebratory peak-time moments.

OsloClubCast was initiated by Vinny Villbass in 2012 to promote the emerging club scene of the norwegian capitol. Every week, the clubs of Oslo sent resident dj´s to record their sets at the tiny venue Turkish Delight (RIP). The response, both live and online was massive!

Since then, OsloClubCast has been hosting recordings at festival stages and different Oslo venues, focusing on both legendary and fresh talents, spreading the essence of the norwegian sound.
