Tribute to New York City. 

Saying goodbye to New York was very hard for me. This is undoubtedly a painful process. I went through this when I left my homeland 6 years ago. At first it drains you. Then you take all your hands and gradually fill life with new meaning, because time heals.

On Thanksgiving, I wanted to record something special to express my gratitude to New York, the city that taught me so much and to send a message to all the amazing, kind, responsive and incredibly talented people I met there, to those who became my friends, to everyone who shared a piece of themselves with me. In this music - you, me, all of us. 

I recorded this set on Thanksgiving NIght at Cranes (Restaurant) in Washington DC | November 23rd 2023.

"222 Minutes". This is my first set this year. It was recorded live at "Cranes" where I work since I moved from New York to Washington DC a few months ago. This compilation contains Rare Groove, Jazz, Modern Soul, Funk, Disco, Gospel, House, Broken Beat, RnB. 

Sad but I am missing the Winter Jazz Festival in New York this week. The first tune (and the whole set) is inspired by Gilles Peterson. This photo was taken in January last year during the WJF 2023. We made a quick visit to one of the record shops between the shows and GP made a quick gift - he bought me this great record released by Jackie Paris in 1981 featuring amazing Stevie Wonder's "Summer Soft" cover which I've never heard before (Thank you Gilles!) Shout out and thanks to my friend Frederic Beneix for a few discoveries I made recently - University Of Miami Concert Jazz Band, Sonny Stitt and Yusef Lateef records. After a long journey from New York, performing at Vihod was nothing short of magical. After a challenging few months, the energy, the passion, and the incredible crowd reminded me why Almaty holds such a special place in my heart. Captured live at la Milagrosa - a hidden gem tucked behind a bodega freezer door in laundromat in Brooklyn - this 2-hour excerpt documents the heart of a 5-hour set I played as part of my Summer Thursday residency. It’s a journey that moves with intention: raw and unpredictable. Somewhere between a basement session and a barrio block party, this night spiraled through global rhythms, some deep cuts, and late-night soul transmissions.

Hello friends,

This Thursday, August 14th, I’m back at my summer residency at La Milagrosa in South Williamsburg - a tiny speakeasy with just enough space for the music to wrap around us. I’ll be joined by some of my friends behind the decks, and we’ll play from 10PM until the night decides to end.
Milagrosa is one of those rooms where you feel every record. A handful of people, close enough to exchange smiles, close enough to hear the air between the notes.

I’ve been DJ-ing for over 25 years, collecting music from all corners of the world - each track carrying its own story, its own heartbeat. On Thursdays, I get to stitch these moments together: fresh discoveries, long-lost gems, and sounds that still give me goosebumps after decades. No hype, no big expectations, just a night for those who love music, connection, and the beauty of getting lost in a groove.

And here’s a little taste - I recorded my Sunday set at @Brooklynpopup at @Brooklynmuseum. Think of it as a warm-up for what’s coming this Thursday.

Rustam Ospanoff - Steps Ahead

A big thank you to Public Records NYC for inviting me to play on Friday night and for making me feel so welcome. It’s always such a joy to share my music there. I left feeling inspired, connected, and grateful and I hope we will do it again soon.

This is a recording of my early evening set I made Upstairs 8-11pm (Aug 15th 2025). It’s a 3-hour journey through some jazz, new and old rare records from the Caribbean, African continent, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and Lebanon, plus classic house music from New York, Chicago, and London.

His DJ sets have taken him all over the world from music festivals like SummerStage (Central Park NYC), Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide (France), Cully Jazz (Switzerland), Southern Soul (Montenegro), Terraneo (RBMA/Croatia), Sunsplash; parties like Soul In The Horn, Golden Record in NYC to numerous events in London, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore, Mexico City, Hamburg, Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lisbon, Brussels, Ghent, Liege, Geneva, Sierre, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Zagreb, and other parts of the world. 

Rustam is well known for his long 6-8 hrs vinyl sets in New York City. He was a resident DJ at Public Records, Virgin Hotel, Ace Hotel NY & Brooklyn, Lilli Star at Moxy Brooklyn Hotel, Izzy Rose, Studio 151, Nublu, Record Room. He also played records at some of the most important NYC venues like Nowadays, Elsewhere, Jupiter Disco, Le Bain, Black Flamingo, Magick City, Milagrosa, Good Bar, including regular DJ sets at Brooklyn Museum and Rockefeller Center.

He is best known for being the founder of Jazzystan Music Festival (this ran from 2009 in Almaty, Kazakhstan) in his home country. He booked and produced live acts featuring artists like Jamiroquai, Incognito, OMAR, Marcos Valle, Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, LEFTO, Nubya Garcia, EZRA Collective, Kyoto Jazz Massive feat.
