A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

Vertere - Mind Against & Somne

Constantly turning around itself, the winding melody of Vertere turns outward and inward at the same time, bringing the listener on a journey outward while mirroring a simultaneous labyrinthine journey inward. Like the word itself, Vertere, with its roots in the Latin word Verto (which itself takes its roots in the earlier Sanskrit word, Vartayati) it signifies the very nature of change itself. It means both to turn and reflect inward and yet also move forward — a call to action for setting in motion new things. A paradox at first glance but also perhaps a surprisingly accurate description of the destructive and reconstructive nature of creation. An apt metaphor for this bright new collaboration between established Life and Death artists Mind Against and the new artist project of Federico Maccherone, aka Somne.

On remix duties, when you have an artist of the caliber of Tobias Freund, you don’t need to ask for anything more and with his outstanding remix of Vertere he very clearly shows why. This long time mainstay of the electronic music scene has managed to stay not just relevant but on the cutting edge longer than most with respected releases on some of the most seminal imprints to be putting out music in the world of underground dance music. With Vertere he takes what’s already top quality material and somehow manages to turn it inward and in his own unique way elevate it to another level entirely. With a relentless beat and a sonic force that is hard to describe with mere words the Tobias. remix of Vertere comes out of the gate like a runaway machine rapturously drunk on its own self awareness. It marches ever forward, full of fervor, and will surely be driving dance floors both large and small to the euphoric edge of the ecstatic state.

Shelter is our latest release from Clint Stewart and it's a benchmark in the catalog as it's the first time any of our releases have included a remix. And, for that remix, we showed no restraint, commissioning our very own, man of the hour, Stephan Hinz.

As you dive into the first cut off the EP, 'Shelter', you instantly begin to take an excursion into the ethereal. Shimmers of distant audible light flicker in the backdrop as a hypnotic pulse tightens its grip, strapping you in for a trip deep into celestial territory. Long single blasts of deep bass and racing percussion thrust you further into the void until you're far from your point of origin. 'Shelter' is a journey into the vast, ever expanding reaches of impassioned sonics ideal for deeper dance floor antics.

On the flip is 'L714' and much like 'Shelter' it's a cosmic ride, but differs in the fact that it is exceedingly relentless. Eery string like tones and massive low end bursts set the stage for a narcotic, swirling lead that parallels a comet hurtling through the ether. Bits of it falling apart and leaving a visible tail of particles in it's wake creating the ideal flip to 'Shelter'. Where both originals may have left something to be desired for those who want it heavy, Stephan Hinz fills that void. While staying undeniably true to the original 'L714', he adds only what he felt was missing. Taking the original to new heights with colossal drums and tension displayed with the arrangement of a cinematic masterpiece derived from another world. Overall, the 'Shelter Ep' is a complete package, hitting all emotions and leaving nothing to be desired no matter the time or situation.
