Leipzig, schon wieder Leipzig – hier formiert sich pre- und post-pandemisch eine Riege der derzeit gefragtesten DJs. Eine von ihnen ist Ostbam. Die Leipzigerin steht für einen ravigen, trotzdem darken Technosound, der (fast) ohne Edits, aber nicht ohne Gabber auskommt. Bestechend locker, wirkmächtig und schnell sind die Sets, die Ostbam als Resident des Institut fuer Zukunft bis ins Line-up des diesjährigen CTM Festivals und damit ins Berghain geführt haben. Wir haben die DJ und Labelhead von Unusual Suspects nach Feierabend getroffen und über ihre Anfänge in Dresden, ihren Daytime-Job, Stress beim Auflegen, 30 sein und – natürlich – Musik gesprochen. Außerdem gibt es hier ihren exklusiven Mix zu hören.

Ostbam started DJing thanks to a workshop dedicated to FLINTA* back in 2015, shortly after she moved to Germany from Poland. The underground hardcore and psytrance scene of her hometown Gdańsk had a huge influence on Ostbams style, which include almost everything from techno to gabber and ranges from around 140 up to 180 BPM. Since her very beginnings as a DJ, Ostbam has been involved in feminist projects and does workshops on a regular basis. She had her first appearance at Berghain during the legendary CTM Festival in 2022 and is a regular in clubs across Germany in Europe.

I had so many ideas for this mix and I think that from the moment, when I started to think about it until I’ve finally recorded it, I went through at least 10 different concepts. I’ve finally decided to record a short breakbeat mix, cause this is the music that helped me survive the pandemic. From gabber and hardcore I’ve finally discovered oldschool breakbeat / hardcore and have been hooked since then. I rarely have a chance to play breaks at the club, so here you go. This is just a small taste from my messy collection.

Proper Charts is a weekly format bringing you a diverse line up of artists and DJs showcasing their personal current top 5 tracks. Releasing every Sunday this format acts as a counterpart to todays commercially pushed music charts, instead focusing on underground club music and independent producers.

Ostbam started DJing thanks to a workshop in 2015, shortly after she moved from Poland to Dresden. Growing up in Gdańsk had a huge influence on her current style, which is a mixture of industrial, acid and hard techno, often varied with oldschool hardcore, gabber or even happy hardcore. Shortly after the workshop, Ostbam and few other people have started ProZecco - a feminist DJ collective focusing on workshops and supporting young and unknown FLINTA* DJs in Saxony. Around 2017 she moved to Leipzig and slowly established her style while performing in various clubs across Germany (f.i. ://about blank, Institut fuer Zukunft, objekt klein a, Mensch Meier). Ostbam also had her first undocumented Boiler Room appereance during the HARD DANCE tour back in 2020.

GABBER PROMO MIX 2

@Ostbaaam kam in den späten 00er Jahren in ihrer Heimatstadt Gdańsk auf den Geschmack von Hardcore und hat ihn seither nicht wirklich aufgegeben. Seit 2015 spielt sie mit verschiedenen Hard-Dance-Genres, aber der frühe Hardcore ist ein fester Bestandteil davon. Manchmal findet sich auch der ein oder andere Breakbeat, oder Italo Disco in ihrem Sets wieder. 

Ostbam supportet Newcomer DJs, besonders FLINTA. 
Sie organisiert kleinere oder auch größere Veranstaltungen, wo genau diese Newcomer eine Bühne bekommen.
Als Resident-DJ des Institut für Zukunft steht sie auch hinter einer der ersten Leipziger Hard-Dance-Partyreihen, der BPM Attack.

For the last mix of the year, we invited the amazing OSTBAM <3 

Ostbam has got the first taste of hardcore in her hometown Gdańsk in the late 00s, and hasn’t really gave up on it since then. She tends to juggle different hard dance genres in her sets, but early hardcore is a constant part of it. The broad spectrum of Ostbams musical interests reaches far more than gabber. You might regularly hear her playing faster techno, all kinds of rave music, as well as breakbeat or even italo disco. Always highly focused behind the decks, she surprises raver crowds with most carefully selected gems.
While being a DJ is definitely an important part to play in the local scene, Ostbam is trying to engage with newcomer DJs (especially FINTA*) by organising workshops, mentorings and booking them for parties in smaller and bigger venues. As a resident DJ of Institut für Zukunft, she’s also behind one of Leipzigs first hard dance party series BPM Attack.

Ostbam @ Red Light Radio 18.05.2019

I know there´s kinda been an overload of small podcasts here lately, but I´ve got an incredible opportunity to actually come back to my gabber/hardcore roots and play on a gabber party at an off-location in Munich (organized by an amazing, vinyl-only DJ Iso E super from WUT collective). This was a huge challenge since back then, when I used to attend loads of freetek parties I did not DJ nor did I care about anything else different then well.. you can answer that by yourself. This is a reconstruction of a small part of my set, which was actually interrupted by cops. Enjoy it & book me for your harddance pleasure!
