the Nightmares On Wax mix

The 2nd voyage into the sonic trip of my youth, and a tribute to the sounds that shaped so much of what I listen to today. 

This part deux represents a time in the late 1990s when pioneering artists were beginning to fuse live instrumentation, electronic programming, vocal snippets, and hip-hop sensibility.   It got labeled things like "chill" or "trip hop" or "lounge" or "acid jazz" ... but those early recordings really gave birth to unbelievable exploration.

For many of us, this music is that fleeting moment before the internet took over everything.  Record shops and mail order outfits were the only way to find new records and CDs.  Indie magazines, especially Straight No Chaser, were like Bibles.  E-mail groups were key (what up, all you old Acid Jazz Mailing List vets!).  The resulting pause-button mixtapes we all trafficked in were an excruciating art.  

The host of labels that sprouted up to fill the void were eclectic, scattered across the globe and bangin: Guidance Recordings, Stereo Deluxe, G-Stone, Cup Of Tea, Mo Wax, Jazz Fudge, Shadow Records, Eighteenth Street Lounge, K7, Yellow Productions, Disorient, Ninja Tune, etc. etc ... They'd pluck it off the streets and make it global with no real plan for making money.  And it was awesome because it was all about the music.

So here is my tribute to that era (and my recent journey through old dusty stacks of wax and plastix that I finally found the time to finally dive into).

Side "B" was born from the memories of never going to sleep and 'waking' with the sun, surrounded by friends ... the night you'd just had fuzzy and crystallized ... the thing that grounded your spinning minds: music ... before we all scattered our separate ways.

The Return Of The Classic is the return of Greek beat-master Mister T. to the Cold Busted label, and he certainly explores a classic sound. Based in Athens, Greece, Mister T. has long been transmitting the jazzier side of downtempo hip hop, with top notch jams that are soulful, swinging, and undeniably funky. This album is the latest in a string of Mister T. collections on Cold Busted … as prolific as Mister T. is, his quality never falters and the tunes don’t disappoint.
