Following a string of EPs on his own eponymous imprint, Locked Groove (@lockedgrooves) presents his debut album - Sunset Service - OUT NOW on Scuba's Hotflush. Since debuting with his first EP on Hotflush back in 2012, Locked Groove has delved into various genres to inform his constantly evolving sound. Drawing on an acute melodic ear developed whilst training as a classical pianist, all of his productions are underscored by an inherent sense of musicality. Using a diverse range of influences, he translates their sentiments into hybrid dance floor constructions that look primarily towards the 90s rave culture of Belgium, with a subtle nod to the UK.


Written over a one year period with combination of analog and digital equipment at his Berlin studio, Sunset Service documents the synthesis of a carefully studied musical background into one coherent body of work. Across twelve tracks, Locked Groove forges cathartic build-ups with intricate pads and floating melodies, re-purposing references - both subtle and overt - from the musical subcultures of his Belgian homeland. But although there is a strong connection to the past, these allusions are carefully moulded into a singular, forward-thinking sound.

Following 2019’s ‘New Atlantis’ LP under his experimental techno alias @Efdemin, Phillip Sollmann’s ‘Monophonie’ is a project dedicated to uniting different strands of utopian music. His approach: combining and recontextualizing rare historical instruments of sonic research of Hermann von Helmholtz (19th century) with the self-designed, microtonal instruments of Harry Partch and metal sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia.

The result is a psychedelic investigation into just intonation – alternative tuning systems that create unique sets of harmonics not found in conventional scales. ‘Monophonie’ recasts these sounds into new rhythmic environments where epic kosmische, polyrhythms, acoustic techno and microtonal glow are interwoven into a rare music.

Over nine tracks, the album explores multiple forms of minimalism, from unwavering repetition to paired-down chords and sparse sonic environments. But it also seeks to expand the sound spectrum of Partch’s custom built organs and melodic percussion instruments as well as Bertoia’s sonambient singing metal rods into an atmospheric otherworldliness.

‘Monophonie’ was first composed in 2016 and premiered at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre in 2017, before it went on to the renowned Ruhrtriennale and Kampnagel in Hamburg. It was performed by one of Germany’s premier neue musik collectives Ensemble @Musikfabrik together with Sollmann himself on von Helmholtz’s original double siren, with set design by Michael Kleine and wardrobe by Peter Kisur of Honeysuckle Company.

In diesem Feature führt Podcast Host Gesine Kühne spannende Interviews mit Protagonist*innen der Clubkultur und zeigt auf, wie es den Clubbetreiber*innen und Veranstalter*innen während der Covid-19 Krise geht, was die Politik unternimmt, um die Szene zu unterstützen und welche Rolle die Clubcommission spielt. Diese Folge zeigt ebenfalls, wie wichtig der Zusammenhalt der Akteur*innen der Clubkultur in diesen Zeiten ist. Sebastian Riedel, Besitzer des Berliner Clubs Ritter Butzke, erzählt, dass er trotz hoher Kosten und wenigen Einnahmen positiv gestimmt ist. Er möchte sich nicht dem Virus hingeben und fordert deshalb deutlich mehr Unterstützung aus der Politik, als aktuell geboten wird. Pamela Schobeß ist Vorsitzende der Clubcommission, der Interessensvertretung für Clubs, Veranstalter*innen und Kollektive. Gemeinsam mit vielen Clubs gründete sie zu Beginn der Krise die Initiative United We Stream, einen Livestream, der über Spenden den Erhalt der Berliner Clubszene sichern soll. Auch ihr machen die Perspektivlosigkeit der Veranstaltungsstätten und die hohen Kosten zu schaffen. Der Grünen Politiker und kulturpolitische Sprecher Georg Kössler liebt Techno und setzt sich für den Erhalt der Clubs ein. Er sieht die Clubkultur nicht nur als wichtigen wirtschaftlichen Faktor für Berlin, sondern versteht auch, dass Räume für Minderheitsgruppen verloren gehen könnten und die Stadt ihre Diversität verliert, wenn Clubbetreiber*innen ihre Rechnungen nicht mehr zahlen können. Er erklärt, wie und an welcher Stelle die Politik unterstützen will und muss. Wie neue Club-Konzepte aussehen könnten, welche Lücke die fehlende Clubkultur hinterlässt und welche Schwierigkeiten sich bei der Nutzung von Freiflächen ergeben, erzählen die Protagonist*innen im Podcast.

Filipino-American DJ and producer based in San Francisco CA. 888 was first Introduced to electronic music through the San Francisco underground techno scene. Slowly, while collaborating with friends, she honed her skills by playing at local bars and clubs. She hosts monthly events namely "Tone Exploration", creates a safe environment for new artists to openly express their musical talents and "texhno.exe", an event that highlights the unsung heroes of the Bay Area music scene. 888 plays varied sounds that range from downtempo, house, experimental to hard techno. She loves the opportunity of exploring newer genres and finds excitement in playing styles she never played before. 888 has a special affinity for industrial techno, electro and new/synth wave.

Our Streaming From Isolation series is now raising donations directly for Black Lives Matter-affiliated causes. Donations to this stream go to NAACP Legal Defence, a US civil rights organisation that fights for racial justice through litigation, advocacy, & public education.

As part of Streaming From Isolation series, @Ballantines has committed a fund in the form of 20 grants to be distributed to community-driven collectives around the world. These grants will be given to each collective to distribute as they feel best to support under threat artists and those most in need within their immediate community. This support is critical over the coming months whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place and impacting many artists’ ability to do what they love and to make a living. INDEX:Records, a new label of far-flung, left-field electronic experimentation and wizardry, are releasing their latest various-artists compilation, “INDEX: Vol. 3” on November 4th. We at Bolting Bits would like to take the opportunity to invite you to a virtual release listening-party happening on Thursday, October 29th at 4:00pm EDT, hosted by INDEX on Facebook Live. With the fifth track on INDEX:Records’ compilation, King Softy’s “Pump Capacitor” brings a slice of harsh, corrosive abstract electronic in the same vein as Objekt. The obscure Berlin-based artist has yet to release an EP, but if this track is any indication, his sound is fully formed and ready to be deployed in a longer format. 

The opening sub-bass of the track is deep and all-encompassing, making way for an onslaught of stripped-down, mutated drum-n-bass percussion, alien-like synth effects, and a heavily-distorted vocal clip. Softy takes the bare-bones structure of a drum-n-bass song and stretches it to its most extreme permutations until what is left is hardly recognizable, but at the same, completely engrossing. Despite its exercise in experimental electronic acrobatics, the song maintains a robust structure, circling back to its central beat with the same menacing and stealthy energy of an Anaconda wrapping its way around a lifeless victim.

The song gradually loosens its muscular grip, shedding layers of sonic distortion and contorted noise before once again revealing that skeletal drum pattern and ephemeral ambiance. Across four minutes, Softy displays an impressive array of hard-edged, mind-melting sonic tricks that feel right at home on this outre compilation.

Georgia-born @cpowers is the second artist to join the fledgling @contagiondiscs imprint. 'Which Ad Experience Do You Prefer?' is their first release of 2021 and collects four compound tracks that scratch and bump through breaks, house and garage. C Powers has been making tracks and DJing in the South and around the world for well over a decade, while recent releases have come via labels like Sorry Records and Sweat Equity.

Now based in Portland, @cpowers has both refined and expanded their vision of a groove-based, in-your-face electronics over the years. 'Which Ad Experience' consolidates that vision, utilizing a sequence of hard breaks, shuffling 2-step and tight, playful basslines across its four tracks. 'Tinea' channels martial rhythm into a seductive dancefloor anthem.
