Bassekou Kouyate - Jonkoloni

A fourth track from our recording session with Ali Farka Touré in 1988, while he was still establishing himself on the world stage. He was en route to a tour of the Scottish Highlands, and had a day off while passing through Edinburgh. His road manager, a friend of mine, decided it would be a good idea to arrange a session and see if we could record it. So, last minute I called up some musician friends, and roped in the services of Claude Harper, ex-Abbey Road recording engineer who just happened to have a 24-track mobile. This along with the other tracks on here, is the result. Apparently, Ali was very happy with it and carried the tape around with him for many years! However, his record company was less enthusiastic and ordered us to destroy the master tapes.

 Some years later, this song appeared on the Grammy-winning Talking Timbuktu album with Ry Cooder. Here though, the line-up is, apart from Ali and his percussionist Roger Sisset, 100% Scottish. Me on 2nd guitar, Leading BBC composer David McNiven on keyboards, top Scottish jazz bassist Kenny Ellis on bass, World music afficionado Jim Sutherland on percussion, and former London session-player Mike Travis on drums.

Phil van Dulm and Alexander Bartels, musically known as Wanderwelle, produce electronic music that balances between the genres of ambient and experimental techno. Last year, their debut album ‘Lost in a Sea of Trees’ was released by the Canadian label Silent Season. The album’s main sources of inspiration were the rich Slavic folklore and the ancient pagan tribes that once roamed the European woodlands. The artists collected field recordings in Russian, Czech and Dutch forests. Throughout the album the ominous howling of the winds and other natural sounds play a prolific role. Within 48 hours the double LP was sold out worldwide, the repress just in a day. Wanderwelle closed their year with a 2.5 hour live set at the legendary Tresor, Berlin.

This year a new album will be released on Silent Season, which is inspired by the last years of the life of Paul Gauguin that he spent on the island of Tahiti. 'Gathering of the Ancient Spirits' tells the alternative history of his search for a land which is untouched by modern society and whose inhabitants were still dependent on the gifts of nature and connected to their ancestors.

In 2017, “Sweet As Broken Dates", our Grammy-nominated compilation of stellar Somali music from before the country’s civil war, captured the entire world's imagination. The songs revived heartwarming memories of a lavish Mogadishu and Hargeisa not known to many non-Somalis, and in many ways allowed the Somali diaspora to reconnect with a time and place ransacked by the wicked fates of history.

All our due diligence and research led us to believe that some of finest music ever made firmly stopped when the war started. Hibo Nuura’s song on the compilation, “If the Artist Lets You Down”, added to this perception, as the widely respected Nuura chastised her fellow musicians for what she saw as a failure of their responsibility to keep the country’s rich music culture alive amid tragedy.

But we were wrong. The music did not stop. Both famous and obscure Somali musicians quietly kept their culture alive in the 1990s and 2000s on drum machines, synthesizers, and laptops. The Somali pentatonic sound melded perfectly with new digital equipment, almost exhibiting an even more authentic sound as analog western instrumentation vacated the repertoire. Most of these recordings were kept private or shared in small circles, never reaching the same audiences in luxurious venues as the music of the 70s and 80s.

This is Chapter 2 in the Somali music story, not Vol. 2. 

At Ostinato Records, we want to reimagine the sequel for music compilations. Too often, “Vol. 2” is filled with the choice cuts that simply did not qualify for the first volume. As storytellers and image-makers, this approach needs a rethink. We have a responsibility to carry the story forward, to not simply rehash what has already been available, and to give agency to the recent past rather than constantly hark back to the 70s and 80s.

“Import/Export Mogadishu” is the side A of a mixtape to announce that we are deeply immersed in producing "Sweet As Broken Dates Chapter 2" and to give fans who relished the first compilation a sneak peak into the direction we’re headed. Side B of the mixtape will be an insight into Chapter 3.

The selection begins with a slow-burning groover by the lively Xabib Shaarabi, a key Somali music figure in the 1990s whose digital disco style was celebrated in a short but viral documentary by The Guardian. We are also proud to announce that Xabib Shaarabi along with lifetime achievement award winner, Cabdinuur Alale, will be performing in Berlin on March 23 as part of the Find the File Festival (https://www.facebook.com/events/1142289929266253/)

These are the next stages in the Somali music revival: the advancement of a story with endless chapters and the resurrection of former greats and live bands, reunited to showcase what no war could vanquish: the resilience and adaptability of the Somali experience.

When you meet Samba Touré in person, he comes off as a soft-spoken man, a man who easily charms you with his abundant smile and optimistic gait. But on his third album, Albala, which in the Songhai language means “danger” or “risk”, a weighted and at times defiant side of his personality emerges. To call Albala his darkest album is an understatement, but it is not a self-absorbed darkness. The cause of Touré’s worry is the crashing world around him, and more specifically the troubles echoing out from his beloved northern Mali homeland.

The last year has brought cataclysmic change and upheaval to northern Mali. The tragic details of this have been globally reported, so there is little point in sensationalizing them here. But the cumulative effect of these events on Samba’s music seems palpable. There is an added gravity to his voice and his words, an additional sting to his electric guitar; there are sharper edges and more complex undertones in his musical arrangements. 

On “Fondora (Leave Our Road)” Samba sings with indignation:
I say, leave our road/ All killers leave our road/ Thieves leave our road
Looters, leave our road/ Rapists, leave our road/ Betrayers, leave our road

And on the haunting “Ago Djamba (Life Betrays Us)” Touré warns: We do not all have the same opportunities/ Here, nobody is born rich but we all have the same value/ Life betrays us.

As a band member, and valued collaborator of the late Malian legend Ali Farka Touré, Samba established a significant reputation, and through his first two solo albums Songhai Blues and Crocodile Blues (World Music Network) his confidence and musical prowess grew proportionately. 

But Albala is a new flash point. There is more power, there is more grit, the mood is deeper, and aptly, given the album’s title, Touré takes more musical risks.

Recorded at Studio Mali in Bamako, in the autumn of 2012, Samba is joined by his regular band members Djimé Sissoko (n’goni ) and Madou Sanogo (congas, djembe) and guests such as the legendary, master of the soku (a one-stringed violin) Zoumana Tereta and the fast-rising Malian neo-traditional singer Aminata Wassidje Traore. Additionally, Hugo Race (The Bad Seeds, Dirtmusic, Fatalists) contributes an array of subtle atmospherics on guitar and keyboards.

On the opening song, “Be Ki Don”,Samba sings: “Everybody welcomes Samba Touré.”
With an album as soulful and captivating as Albala, that might not be an over-statement.
