D’incarnations en réincarnations, Judah Warsky et Yeti Lane se côtoient et s’apprécient depuis leurs débuts. Il aura pourtant fallu attendre 2017 pour qu’une première collaboration ait lieu, chacun remixant l’autre, juste comme ça, pour le fun.
Tandis que Judah, depuis Buenos Aires, a silencieusement transposé Ne Dis Rien au cours d’une semaine de printemps au milieu de l’automne, à Paris les Yeti Lane se sont enfermés dans leur repaire souterrain et, seuls face à l’écran de leur studio, ont ré-enregistré le titre de Judah.
Le résultat : un quart d’heure de total trip narcotique et envoûtant.

The cries echoed through the darkness on a hot, stormy night. The rain splattered upon the dusty floor and the tribe moved steadily forwards into the glow of the moonlight. They rejoiced in great glee at the falling sky, their cotton shirts soaked beneath the damp rain water. These were the voices of Africa which were missing from the traditional coverage in the 21st century. Too much time was spent buried in the past, in trials and tribulations of a proud and noble people. Tonight, the rain would cleanse such stereotypical despair. 

José Manuel's "Excursion Africanism" was arguably one of the highlights of last years musical calendar. Now the release has been remixed and who better to feature than Mehmet Aslan?

Beautiful piano melodies, ballads drawing their inspiration from jazz, classical music and cinematic imagery, hummed choruses, a mood at the crossroad of nostalgia and reverie, instruments with uncanny timbre and charm, chiseled percussions, added to a subtle electronic production, this is the recipe for Tout Va Bien, the second solo album by French composer Ezechiel Pailhès.

All this is reflected in the opening track, River Day, which begins with “prepared piano” sounds (a technique mastered by Ezechiel, which consists in placing different objects on the strings of the piano, to create singular percussive notes). This deliberately mysterious and poetic introduction, supported by light electronic effects, is soon combined with a light beat, organ chords and vocalisations by the artist, which gradually transform the track into a ritornello, with both nostalgic and lighthearted tones.

As the artist states it: “We could describe this type of emotion as a kind of endearing nostalgia, close to saudade,” i.e. the Portuguese term expressing the idea of ​​a light melancholy stripped of its sickly aspect, or a “haunted craving” as the singer and composer Pierre Barouh nicely put it. “This feeling comes naturally to me when I write. Generally, in my music, I seek a form of soothing, of eternity even, (without meaning to sound pretentious). This is something I encounter in classical music, which is what I listen to most.”

Even if he defines himself as a “jolly fellow” (which is confirmed by the music and reputation of his electro-pop duo Nôze), when chatting to him, he comes across as quite gentle and stellar, just like this collection of eleven tracks that he composed “in autarky”, entirely alone, in his Montreuil home studio. Following the footpath of Divine, his first solo release from 2013, this album is however more intimate, marking Pailhès' taste for finely crafted moods and drifts. Songs like Tout Va Bien, but also Éternel Été and Promesse, whose lines have been borrowed from Shakespeare's sonnets, seem to shift between carelessness, bliss, bitterness and anxiety.

As for titles such as Octobre, Boyd London or Le Fou Du Phare, they illustrate Ezechiel’s gift for composing instrumental ballads, with equally versatile emotions though drawing from cinema, supported by whispered or sung vocalisations. Ezechiel explains: “No word can quite describe this type of singing, it's a kind of ritornello, these are songs without lyrics, which is all down to the fact that I always think of my melodies as songs. The absence of words is not a form of laziness. My songs simply say enough for people to imagine their own story. It is more about suggesting or evoking a feeling, an emotion. "

Even though he composed on the piano, in this album Ezechiel plays and toys with numerous other instruments, such as the Clavietta (a type of Melodica), a Moog Little Phatty synth, an analog Korg Lambda organ, rare virtual instruments, and a whole array of exotic percussions, gleaned along his tours. He insists, however, on the sculptural dimension of his compositional work. For him, it is about “revealing or masking the sound of the original melody” through various processes, including percussive ones, whether using a prepared piano (which he even calls "transformist”) or several digital cuts and superimpositions enabling him to generate what he calls “sound illusions”, through unusual associations between the timbres of various instruments.

Cet été, Abdoulaye Koné dit Kandiafa, neveu de Mama Sissoko, célèbre compagnon de route d'Ali Farka Touré, électrise son Mali.

Surnommé le "Django Reinhardt du Mali", Kandiafa apparait en en 2017 sur le label Sans Commentaire. Son album "Mali Country" sonne comme un hymne aux musiques qu’affectionne le virtuose, dans un style résolument africain. En effet, s'il a reçu l'enseignement traditionnel des musiciens griots de Bamako au Mali, son infinie curiosité le pousse à étudier la musique Arabe, le Flamenco, ainsi que la plupart des styles occidentaux. C'est lors d'une tournée aux États Unis, au Canada et en France qu'il découvre la musique country et le jazz manouche. Le déclic se produit : la naissance d'une identité musicale. Tel Django, et à tout juste 30 ans, Kandiafa créé un son, un style unique, et authentiquement Africain.

Aujourd'hui, Kandiafa change de couleur pour re-explorer ses titres "Kele Magni" et "Nyonton" avec la sortie d’un nouvel EP de 4 titres. Au programme: rien de moins que le cultissime producteur french touch St Germain, Ghost of Christmas (les petits protégés de Laurent Garnier, croisés sur la route avec Rone ou encore French 79), Mawimbi (les ambassadeurs de l'afro-house, qui fêtent leurs cinq ans d'activisme ce jours ci) et Sébastien Forrester (repéré chez le super label parisien Nowadays) proposent une relecture hypnotique de l’atypique artiste.

Leurs approches du style du flamboyant malien nouvelle génération varient entre déconstructions et reconstruction, appropriation des timbres, développement de grooves multipliés et réinterpretations mélodiques. L’essence de "Mali Country" est bel et bien là, autant sublimé par St Germain, qui fait ressortir la touche latino du titre, que chez Ghost of Christmas dont le remix est construit comme un kaléidoscope autour des notes de sa guitare magique, le djeli ngoni. Finalement Mawimbi et Sébastien Forrester consacrent au son malien un classicisme electro sans faille, dans un registre dansant pour les uns et cinématographique pour l'autre.

Mawimbi crew : "En tant qu'amateur de musiques mandingues, c'était vraiment un plaisir de pouvoir bosser avec ces pistes. L'idée était d'isoler la "substance" mélodique du morceau, à savoir la voix et le ngoni medium, pour venir construire autour de cela en ajoutant des boîtes à rythme, une ligne de basse forte et en doublant certaines parties avec des synthétiseurs. L'idée générale était d'offrir une relecture un peu plus dansante, tout en travaillant quelque chose qui puisse aussi s'écouter à la maison. L'inspiration du remix me vient clairement du temps passé à écouter des musiques afro-cubaines et à réaliser combien elles ont en commun avec les musiques mandingues. Ce sont ces ponts là qui m'intéressent au sein de Mawimbi et c'est ce que j'ai essayé de retranscrire au sein de ce remix, tout en jouant subtilement sur la teneur mélancolique du morceau."
