Deep Diversion

Thank you for inviting me to be a part of this @ednamartinezdj . Made a mix with songs that say more than anything I could write really.....Going to play two songs I wrote a while ago, one which I performed live in January 2020 at the Museum of Memory & Human Rights in Santiago and another which was made shortly after, they're both influenced by what was taking place in Chile at the time which mirrors in some ways what we are seeing in Colombia now. As some of you may know, since the end of april in Colombia there have been more than 2,000 cases of police violence against protesters, 33 victims of eye injuries and more than 40 civilians killed by the police. Since the beginning of the year more than 60 rights defenders have been assasinated, and among them 20 were indigenous leaders. Since 2016, over 400 human rights defenders have been killed. In all this darkness, there may be some hope that the protests can create meaningful change. Last Sunday, Chileans elected a new group of citizens who will write a new constitution for the country. This was one of the core demands of the huge protests of 2019/2020.  It will be the first anywhere in the world to be written by an equal number of men and women and it will replace the constitution that has been in place since the years of the military dictatorship.  The only reason this moment of hope is possible in Chile is because of the incredible social movements that rose up to demand change. As I've said elsewhere, the courage and determination of Chilean students, activists, protesters, writers, artists has been astounding and they have/are shifted/shifting the political landscape and will continue to do so. In the past month I've heard stories of Colombian protesters taking cues from Chilean protesters and beautiful solidarity between Colombians and Palestinians also. We have so much to learn from each other. May this solidarity and interconnectedness bring us better days and in the meantime may music sustain us and nourish us. Every musician has his technics when we have a lack of inspiration. Personally, I always thought that music comes from silence, so when I can't make any music, I find a quiet place, sit down, and wait for the music to come to me. I did that once, in my garden, and then those tiny bells appeared. When I heard it perfectly, I ran to my studio to write it down. It reminded me of a snowflake's purity by his sonority, and it's way to dance with the wind by his groove. "Flocon de Neige" was born… I hope you will like it !"

Sing over the Bones

In 2013 a duo began to surface on the radar, associations and releases on Atomnation and Kompakt began to reinforce their status. The pair from the Netherlands, Harm Coolen & Merijn Scholte Albers, make up the Weval project which is about to release its debut album for Kompakt. They met in 2010 and describe their relationship and its outcomes as "organic". Their musical backgrounds vary and have led to a clash of ideas and concepts which is prevalent throughout their work. We caught up with the pair and asked them to record a mix.

Other People is a record label started in New York City in 2013 by Nicolás Jaar. In its 10 years of existence, it has featured the sonic work of over 70 music releases, highlights include Terepa (2015), a "telepathic" collaboration helmed by Kohei Matsunaga (aka NHK’Koyxen) featuring Rashad Becker, Charlotte Collin, Lucrecia Dalt, Laurel Halo, Julia Holter, Grégoire Simon and Kohei himself, Caves (2021), a compilation of silences featuring Laraaji, Aho Ssan, Ana Quiroga and more, Weavings (2022), a collaborative live piece with Juliana Huxtable, Ellen Fullman, Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara of Senyawa, Angel Bat Dawid and others. The label has also put out the 1990 spoken word piece "Conspiracy of Women" (2015) by Lydia Lunch, as well as Tomaga & Pierre Bastien's collaborative album entitled Bandiera di Carta (2019) and Lucrecia Dalt's Esotro / Veta release (2014) with remixes by William Basinski and John Wall. It has also featured the likes of Magdalena Dàugosz, Barbara Zawadzka, Bernadetta Matuszczak, Krzysztof Knittel, Bogusław Shaeffer, Saint Abdullah, Eomac, Dienne, Charbel Haber, Okokon, Against All Logic, FKA Twigs, Darkside, Nicolás Jaar and others.  It has featured the visual work of Maziyar Pahlevan, Africanus Okokon, Zofia Kulik, Jena Myung, Charbel Haber, Abeera Kamran and Somnath Bhatt among others. The label’s current contract states that an artist on the label owns all their rights and decides the full percentage of the revenue they wish to make from their releases on the label, after recoupment. Any of the label’s profit gets given out to artists in forms of grants, workshop and educational initiatives. The label has collaborated in this form with more than three dozen exceptional organizations and individuals in the past three years. Although the label works not-for-profit, it is not a registered non-profit.
