when I wrote this a couple weeks ago, I was just trying to find a way to process my friend leaving town— preemptively missing her and also rooting her on.  though however much I felt, my pal, gal petel, has been feeling infinitely more deeply.  I asked him if he’d want to record this with me — he agreed, as long as we could just do it live.  

today, we release the recording of “changing of the seasons” , a longing for a past future, a call to the unknown, a desire to hold and be held, of momentary beauty, of loss.  it is not lost on me the process of creation of this piece is near both the autumnal solstice and yom kippur / rosh hashana, the jewish new year.  

for those who are called to listen, I invite us into this new season with tender hearts, compassion, and a gathering of this summer’s harvest before a fallow winter, a season of rest.

Changing of the Seasons (featuring Gal Petel)

Black Patterns Vol. 1 is the full-length album release by Lobster Theremin regular Snow Bone, revealing a more spectrally destructive and experimental side through his Black Patterns moniker.

The LP is a depositary for plaque-coated material culled from a series of experiments with his own ‘Oblique Strategies’ style limitations or ‘tasks’. This conceptually translates into eight raw-to-the-bone styles of techno, house, noise and electro, segueing through layers of blown-out sounds and scattered intricacies along the way. 

The bulk of the material emerged from hardware jams with rudimentary editing, with Hare deliberately limiting the function and type of equipment used to dissuade over-thinking in the album process, achieving a rough-cut and rusted aesthetic.

The tracks were recorded in his home bunker onto a 20-year-old ageing 4-track cassette recorder with filthy, worn-out tape heads, onto tapes that had held several Coil albums, as well as hundreds of his own over-dubbed recordings.

The resulting phantom sounds and textures that developed are intrinsic elements of the albums feel and mood, as are the random re-pitching and other sonic degradations of tape modulation and modifications. 

The resulting black patterns settle in the landscape where Cabaret Voltaire and DAF meet Basic Channel, King Tubby, Jamal Moss and Jeff Mills with unique magneto-phonic ghosts haunting it’s dark spaces.

This time, she's done us a DJ mix of music from the slower side of the tracks; genre hopping throughout and delivering something fresh at every turn, whist never getting up much above 100bpm! The Naive label boss exhibits her wide and varied musical appreciation, and we're thoroughly mesmerised. Turn it up!

The home comforts series (along with my Barefoot Adventures) are a true way for me to express myself as an artist.

Its a different kind of experience to playing in a club, to making people dance. I want to take a moment to thank everyone of you who has supported it so far.  I appreciate some people may be put off when there aren’t beats and it isn’t within the club format.

I feel as if there is enough of that right now, and thats why I am focusing on other things for now.
The point of these projects I run is to give people more than one certain thing, to create moods and feelings relevant to all of us, whether that be your grandmother sitting by the fire, or you and your lover laying in the grass.

A big dream for me is to feel 100% open and free with my creative choices, not to feel locked into one sound or one stereotype, because after all aren’t we made of 60% water? Shouldn’t we flow and move in that way too?   We aren't concrete squares.

So once again, hugs for the support. Its a dream.

Here is my new Home Comforts, designed for your trip to the forest, to escape this madness and remind yourself what you are part of.
Inspired by my school days and our long youthful nights spent by the campfire, singing, beatboxing and staring into the abyss of those very flames.

Other People is a record label started in New York City in 2013 by Nicolás Jaar. In its 10 years of existence, it has featured the sonic work of over 70 music releases, highlights include Terepa (2015), a "telepathic" collaboration helmed by Kohei Matsunaga (aka NHK’Koyxen) featuring Rashad Becker, Charlotte Collin, Lucrecia Dalt, Laurel Halo, Julia Holter, Grégoire Simon and Kohei himself, Caves (2021), a compilation of silences featuring Laraaji, Aho Ssan, Ana Quiroga and more, Weavings (2022), a collaborative live piece with Juliana Huxtable, Ellen Fullman, Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara of Senyawa, Angel Bat Dawid and others. The label has also put out the 1990 spoken word piece "Conspiracy of Women" (2015) by Lydia Lunch, as well as Tomaga & Pierre Bastien's collaborative album entitled Bandiera di Carta (2019) and Lucrecia Dalt's Esotro / Veta release (2014) with remixes by William Basinski and John Wall. It has also featured the likes of Magdalena Dàugosz, Barbara Zawadzka, Bernadetta Matuszczak, Krzysztof Knittel, Bogusław Shaeffer, Saint Abdullah, Eomac, Dienne, Charbel Haber, Okokon, Against All Logic, FKA Twigs, Darkside, Nicolás Jaar and others.  It has featured the visual work of Maziyar Pahlevan, Africanus Okokon, Zofia Kulik, Jena Myung, Charbel Haber, Abeera Kamran and Somnath Bhatt among others. The label’s current contract states that an artist on the label owns all their rights and decides the full percentage of the revenue they wish to make from their releases on the label, after recoupment. Any of the label’s profit gets given out to artists in forms of grants, workshop and educational initiatives. The label has collaborated in this form with more than three dozen exceptional organizations and individuals in the past three years. Although the label works not-for-profit, it is not a registered non-profit.
