¿Cómo entrar en Violeta? 

El folklor, el canto nuevo, el rescate, lo político, el desgarro, la locura y vitalidad; sus costados se erigen como muros que eclipsan su esencia y labor. Sus búsquedas creativas van más allá de lo puramente musical y hacen que cualquier adjetivo que se utilice quede en falta; porque ahí cuando oímos su voz, su guitarra, su ritmo, está también la vida: recopiladora de canciones,  anécdotas, dichos, refranes, fiestas, descripciones de velorios; Violeta es “jardinera / locera / costurera / Bailarina del agua transparente / Árbol lleno de pájaros cantores”, como escribió su hermano, el poeta Nicanor Parra, cuya voz podemos escuchar al inicio de esta selección. Sus colaboraciones en Cine, como lo realizado en “Mimbre”, cortometraje documental dirigido por Sergio Bravo en 1957, y en el que dio vida a una pieza de improvisación incidental que no tuvo más guía que el curso natural de las imágenes; sus exposiciones en el Museo de Louvre, lugar donde sentada en el suelo, cantó y bordó ante los ojos maravillados del público; su residencia en el castillo feudal de Suiza, en el que elaboró sus pinturas y arpilleras; su incansable recorrido por la geografía y territorios de Chile, rescatando y visibilizando, como cuenta Víctor Jara también en este mix, la verdad, lo auténtico y real de las canciones que el pueblo interpreta por tradición y que va de abuelas a madres y de madres a hijxs; o su trabajo en la Carpa de la Reina, especie de peña montada por ella misma en la periferia de Santiago a mediado de los 60; son algunos hitos que no alcanzan, que no hacen justicia a su obra, porque siempre habrá un más allá por conocer.

Violeta, como un color, se forma de lo primario y elemental; en esa mixtura surge amplia y apabullante, frágil y violenta; su ímpetu oscila entre puntos distantes, desde la calma a lo estremecedor, desde el dolor más profundo a la vitalidad más intempestiva, desde el canto a lo divino hasta el canto a lo humano, pasando por sus composiciones poco ortodoxas y experimentales que, en todo momento y en cada formato, consiguen estremecer, abrir la piel y la carne para que la vida emerja con toda su intensidad. Su voz, como dijo alguna vez el filósofo, musicólogo y entrañable amigo de Violeta, Gastón Soublette, “supera por mucho su condición individual, es la voz de un colectivo, es la cultura chilena que no quiere morir. Ella fue capaz de decir la verdad ante los poderosos, y cantarles en su cara lo que pensaba, sin importar las consecuencias”.

¿Cómo entrar en Violeta? No lo sé. Solo descubrí esta forma; abrir lentamente las puertas, visitar cada una de sus composiciones, dialogar con ellas, aprender de ellas y estremecerme con ellas. Pero esta es solo mi forma, mi manera de recorrer su historia, una selección que nace de un diálogo y resulta en esta selección que, como en cualquier otra, abunda en ausencias y silencios. Pero ahí, en ese vacío, también reside una invitación: abrir otras puertas y dar con nuevas maneras de dar con ella. 

Este mix está dedicado a Laura Estévez, Fernando Guzzoni y Nicolás Jaar; cómplices de esta escucha.

Other People is a record label started in New York City in 2013 by Nicolás Jaar. In its 10 years of existence, it has featured the sonic work of over 70 music releases, highlights include Terepa (2015), a "telepathic" collaboration helmed by Kohei Matsunaga (aka NHK’Koyxen) featuring Rashad Becker, Charlotte Collin, Lucrecia Dalt, Laurel Halo, Julia Holter, Grégoire Simon and Kohei himself, Caves (2021), a compilation of silences featuring Laraaji, Aho Ssan, Ana Quiroga and more, Weavings (2022), a collaborative live piece with Juliana Huxtable, Ellen Fullman, Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara of Senyawa, Angel Bat Dawid and others. The label has also put out the 1990 spoken word piece "Conspiracy of Women" (2015) by Lydia Lunch, as well as Tomaga & Pierre Bastien's collaborative album entitled Bandiera di Carta (2019) and Lucrecia Dalt's Esotro / Veta release (2014) with remixes by William Basinski and John Wall. It has also featured the likes of Magdalena Dàugosz, Barbara Zawadzka, Bernadetta Matuszczak, Krzysztof Knittel, Bogusław Shaeffer, Saint Abdullah, Eomac, Dienne, Charbel Haber, Okokon, Against All Logic, FKA Twigs, Darkside, Nicolás Jaar and others.  It has featured the visual work of Maziyar Pahlevan, Africanus Okokon, Zofia Kulik, Jena Myung, Charbel Haber, Abeera Kamran and Somnath Bhatt among others. The label’s current contract states that an artist on the label owns all their rights and decides the full percentage of the revenue they wish to make from their releases on the label, after recoupment. Any of the label’s profit gets given out to artists in forms of grants, workshop and educational initiatives. The label has collaborated in this form with more than three dozen exceptional organizations and individuals in the past three years. Although the label works not-for-profit, it is not a registered non-profit.
