Internationally acclaimed DJ, producer, radio host, and label owner Darin Epsilon is often referred to as a leader of the underground dance music scene.  His Perspectives radio show and podcast reaches tens of thousands of listeners every month.  He launched his Perspectives Digital record label in November 2010 as an extension of the brand, further solidifying his influence and presence within the global dance community.  In 2016, he was nominated for 'Best Progressive House Artist' in the annual Beatport Awards, and in 2011, John Digweed named him one of the winners in his DJ Competition sponsored by Bedrock & Ableton Live. It’s been four long years since Steve Bug’s sublime deep house imprint blessed us with Classics Volume 01 – but when it comes Dessous Recordings – it’s worth the wait. Always ahead of the curve, the German label started as an outlet for the tastemaker and uber producer / DJ Steve Bug’s deeper urges – releasing a seemingly endless supply of fresh, smart sounds from some of house’s most renowned artists. No wonder this retrospective comes across as a celebration of a job well done – within its 20 tracks are some of the mostly finely constructed, emotional and downright dancefloor destroying grooves of this or any decade.  Nestled into its prized running order are indeed many classics, whether they be of the new, old or obscure type.  

Familiar faces make a welcome return – check out the contributions by long time collaborators Phonique, Solomun, Ryo Murakami, Vincenzo, Tanzmann and Stefanik – all dropping the genre defining slices of rich, hedonistic, elegant house music that have made their names in Europe and across the globe. As if proof was required that Dessous hasn’t rested on its laurels, several tracks from the last couple of years feature prominently – witness Moodymanc’s motor-funk detonations, Andrade’s twisted disco and Burnski’s deep pressure vibes.  What’s more, Giles Smiths’ Two Armadillos project takes its rightful place in the canon of classic Dessous releases, alongside vocal contributions by straight-up house legend Robert Owens via Dan Berkson and James What’s ‘Keep On’. 

In its 14 years history, Dessous has ridden a fair few sea changes in the choppy waters of house, yet has always retained its unique identity. Dessous Classics Volume 2 is a timely reminder of how quality wins through. Always relevant, always pushing things forward – here’s to many more years on the cutting edge.

The Swiss-born buraq is a DJ, music com- poser and producer based in Zurich, here making his 2nd outing on Steve Bug's Sub- lease Music.
The Untold EP dives straight into the good stuff - the title track is a juicy tech house rol- ler infused with years of experience of the dancefloor. buraq weaves together thick kicks, snappy percussion, deep chords and a sick bassline to create a fully essential tune.

'Unsaid' picks up the baton and runs with it - a taut groove ramps up the tension before melodic loops and a restless synth bring the track to full fruition.

'Unspoken' completes the triptych - another fully primed burner for the late night sessi- ons that balances a powerful groove with light touches.

it is a grand mistake to peg Helmut Ebritsch as a man of havles. Providing 50% of Hatikvah, Klartraum and the guiding vision of Lucidflow, coupled with over 20 years in the business counts as pedigree in my book. Having featured on several Lucidflow releases over the last few years, Helmut steps up into the spotlight for his first solo moment since mid-2011.

Usually associated with deep and rumbling dub orientated works, Luminary appropriately showcases a lighter side to Helmut’s production. It seems that our esteemed commander-in-chief has been getting his funk on, highlighted by the fact that he has been turning up to the Agile Mastering studios in full Bootsy Collins garb recently.

Title track Luminary teases you in with little delicate echoes before unfurling snarling keys upon you. Then swinging up the beats and coasting out with a soundtrack for a US West Coast convertible cruise is Sunburst; radiating with light, warmth and smiles.

909 Lover is all about the slap bass and that punchy open hi-hat of that most legendary of drum machines, before Asylum welcomes you in with a change of pace, full of micro-glitching beats and fluid keyboard solos.

If Helmut is reigning as Sun God for all intent and purposes on this EP, Klartraum partner in crime Nadja Lind takes up the role of Sea Goddess with a liquid interpretation of Luminary. Muted and melancholic, the Sin Remix wraps you up in overcast mood and urban drizzle.

Hopefully it will be less than a year and a half before we see Helmut grabbing the headlines once again, but, in case it is, grab this as it could become a collectors item. Justin Berkovi: "Man.
