PapaLoko: The Lovers at Electrowerkz (Closing Set)

A sacred sound artist and a keen experimentalist, Mona was diagnosed with incurable cancer in April 2021 and was given a maximum of 6 months to live. The news of this diagnosis greatly stirred producer, composer, Papa Loko and Conscious Expansion founder @othonmusic who had experienced his first sound bath, some years earlier, conducted by Mona; an experience that was to stay with him, guide him and inspire him to this day.

Gentle, melancholy, deeply touching and paradoxically hopeful Mona reflects Othon's feelings towards his friend but, to some level also, Mona's spirit. For the artist, Mona's recent life experience was no more than one episode in the vast cosmic series of continuous soul evolution. Viewed in this way, death is painful and meaningful at the same time, perhaps even necessary for one's own spiritual development.

Othon shares a voyage that has been predominantly inspired by medicine songs in plant-medicine ceremonies in South America

Othon has been a music creative for nearly all his life. Starting as a multi-awarded pianist in his native Greece, he relocated in London, where he expanded his path to composition and later on to DJing, producing and party promoting.

During his musical journey, Othon has collaborated with some pivotal musicians, artists, performers, producers, fashion designers and directors. He has worked extensively with Marc Almond, who sung on his early, austere & dark experimental albums. He has collaborated with the late electronic music pioneer Peter (Sleazy) Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Psychic TV), had his music sung by David Tibet, the frontman of seminal ‘apocalyptic folk’ band Current 93, and he performed live for Nasir Mazhar’s fashion catwalk. His latest show was in March at a packed Tate Modern and featured photographer, artist & musician Wolfgang Tillmans as his guest.  

His music has appeared on film, both short and feature, and he wrote scores for cutting edge performances by artists such as Ron Athey and Franko B. Othon was the first pianist to compose music for a pianist wearing boxing gloves, debuting at London’s Roundhouse. Othon’s latest album ‘Pineal’ has been championed by the Guardian Guide, The Quietus and other publications. Othon has performed as a pianist, composer and songwriter in several countries around the world.

Othon’s wish to turn to electronic music production was born after a series of ceremonies in the jungles of Brazil, though his love for techno was always present. During the last two years, he has been performing regularly as a DJ at the underground techno party he co-promotes in London called ‘Papa Loko’ as well as guesting at the Egg and other London venues. He has performed amongst Green Velvet, Ancient Methods, Pig & Dan and others.

Best known for his cosmic DJ sets and his emotionally driven compositions, the frontman of London’s pioneering underground party ‘Papa Loko’ Othon announces his new record label ‘Conscious Expansion’ and the much anticipated first EP.

Focusing around the soul-expanding expressions of electronic and ambient music, Conscious Expansion launches with 3 remixes of shamanic songs from Colombia, Brazil and Peru, crafted by its founder. The rudimental field recordings of the original songs create strongly defined moods and a sense of authenticity that, together with Othon’s uncompromising treatment and experimentation, renders them timeless.

Whether through the interplay of Icaro Sagrado’s haunting chants and resonance-induced playfulness or Cura Sana’s spirit-driven vocals and relentless flutes that lead to a delirious crescendo and a cathartic climax, the EP pushes the envelops of form and sound design, allowing for both unpredictability and freshness.

The birth of the original pieces came from Othon’s concert at London’s Tate Modern in 2017 in which half of the music he performed was pre-composed and the other half was ‘downloaded on the spot in a state of deeply meditative expanded consciousness’. This unusual and liberating method has stayed with him during all stages of the creative process of the album and, to an extent, even during the creation of these mixes.

Highly distinctive and with a sweeping piano melody rhythmically reinforced by sonorous surdos and a deep thumpy kick, Soul Sailor Sailing forms a musical and spiritual oceanic journey of expansion and contraction that promises to carry with it both listeners and dancers alike.

More minimal in terms of its original piano composition, Tortured by Doubt allows for a richer and more complex arrangement. The melancholy piano, accompanied by both strong and subtle rhythmical elements, brings a glimpse of hope on the horizon and leads to two soul-opening crescendos reinforced by explosive analog drums and a driving choir.

When I was recording this on Sunday, my little heart-cup overflowed with so much love that I cried of pure shivering bliss. The opportunity for me to create this Journey for you was simply too much of a blessing to bear.

Though it can be listened to at any time, this Conscious Journey, will unleash its full magical potential if it is used as an accompaniment and guidance during your own private visionary ceremonies… It is a talisman for these solitary or shared soul-sailing trips saved for those special occasions 😉🌵🍄

Conscious Journeys #5: Othon

There are some songs that unconsciously become part of one’s musical DNA.. songs that accompany one’s childhood. Ena Proino is one of them. I was a melancholy kid that loved melancholy music and this old Greek song from the ‘Girls in the Sun’ film, sung by Maria Dimitriadi and written by Stavros Xarnakos, always resonated with me.
