Tunlaw Rd in DC was named after Tunlaw Farm which was located in what is now Glover Park. According to local legend during the Civil War many walnut trees were cut in that area to make gunstocks. To make the name more exotic Walnut was reversed into Tunlaw.

Fast rising DJ and producer Jay Carder makes her mark on Kassian's Faux Poly imprint with her debut EP Entropy, a deep dive into UK bass, techno and breakbeat. Her connection to these sounds is key to her musical energy and ethos, which she's steadily built over the last eight years. Getting her start throwing events with collective 4 To The Floor London, Carder now holds a residency for London-based Voyage events and runs her own party series ‘House of Carder’ which has hosted the likes of Bruce, Breaka, Dr Banana and K-Lone.

Channelling his own explorations in search of the soul inside the machine, VRIL draws from the deep well of his live performances to present his third LP for Delsin, Animist. Inside lie 12 pieces which seem to probe at the unknowable distance between tangible consciousness and the astral plane, imbuing even the most seemingly synthetic of materials with a living essence. Brooklyn newcomer No Sir (@no_sir) joins the Faux Poly family with their new EP ‘Voyeur’, a release full of rich syncopated percussion and expressive soundscapes that document the artists’ evolving perspective on club spaces and home listening.

The record leans towards sub heavy broken beats, resulting in a confident contribution to the flourishing NYC Bass scene. Despite being based in Brooklyn, No Sir has already broken ground in Europe with singles on 3024 & W133.

“I started producing this EP at a really challenging moment last summer after I got a concussion that left me pretty much bed bound for a month. During this time I also quit drinking, so my relationship to music and going to clubs saw a complete overhaul. This EP is my attempt to find a space in between the hours spent at my quiet apartment and my return to these loud, dark spaces I see as another kind of home. The title track, Voyeur, was the first piece of music I made after the injury” - No Sir

PREVIEW: No Sir - Voyeur [FP006]

This summer sees the second instalment of Faux Poly’s remix compilation series. Round 2 features an eclectic selection of artists close to and admired by label bosses Kassian.

Kicking off the compilation is a cavernous, trance inspired reinterpretation of Kassian’s ‘No Clear Shape’ by Manchester’s Homoelectric resident Gina Breeze. Following is Will Hoffbauer with a characteristically leftfield flip of Ste Roberts’ ‘Diego’s Mad Hour, who’s somehow gotten away with dunking a huge techno track into his bubble bath.

Another highlight comes from Rotterdam-based duo Black Cadmium, stepping up for their first ever remix together. Their dark electro inspired take on Ste Roberts’ ‘Dirty Politician’ is bursting with energy, holding onto the mood of Ste’s original with their own added signature groove.

Completing the lineup is London’s Third Son, Niceup, Void Complet, plus contributions from label bosses Warren Xclnce and Danvers.

London-based artist Javano (Shogun Audio / Celsius Recordings), delivers a superb album, showcasing his diverse array of styles. An eleven track LP, with five of them getting served up on a slab of wax. It arrives on Temple of Sound, who's discography has standout releases from the likes of Pugilist (AD93 / 3024) & founder Sub Basics (Lion Charge / Mosaic)

The album screams of high-quality production, floating between flavours of dubbed out drum & bass, deep house and dub-techno. The complex rhythmic structures standout throughout, with Javano's signature dub-wise tone encompassing it all. It's been a big wait for Temple of Sound since they last put out music into the world, but boy does this release make it worth it, it's superb.

The night was young but it already seemed ever so frantic and free in the club. It was as if they had already been there for hours as they danced and moved between the flickering lights as smoke began to fill the air. From the corner of his eye he watched as fellow dancers and revellers continued to file down the stairs and into the murky abyss below.

Perhaps this was his favourite time of the night? The quiet calm before the storm – the music loud but not yet punishing, the pace moody and slow in time with his swaying hips.

He watched as the world beneath became busier and one by one the people came and went. This was a special place, that much was true. Perhaps 10-11 was the best time of all?

Redstone Press continue in the pursuit of leftfield Bass music and harder sounds – the next EP on the label coming from Tano and featuring remixes by the likes of Toumba and Delay Grounds. This one features off piste rhythms and percussion – keeping the energy flowing in the best and weirdest of ways.
