When Otis Goldsparks walked out of Baldwin State Prison in 2005 after spending 15 years incarcerated for a drug fueled crime spree in and around Macon, Georgia, USA, he was a reformed man in more than one way.

The former child evangelist gone wrong bought into a new way of life while behind bars – the life of a soul singer.

But the most amazing part of his story is that the arresting officer who put him there, now serves as his keyboard player and life coach. Richard Labast. a former Georgia State Patrolman turned prison guard, ran into Goldsparks while the two originally were on the opposite sides of the law. But their love of soul music brought them together. Today, Labast performs with Goldsparks as part of their roots soul music act, Otis Goldsparks And The Arcs.

“I was patrolling the prison one day, and I hear this guy singing an old Sam Cooke song, “Bring It On Home,” said Labast from his home in Athens, Ga. “I followed the sound to Otis’ cell, where he was singing. But instead of telling him to keep it down, I pulled a harmonica out of my pocket and started jamming along. It was the beginning of a long friendship. It also helped lighten the atmosphere in the cell block, helped humanize me in the eyes of the inmates, and vice versa. Over the years, Otis and I became good friends.”

Goldsparks, who was a promising child evangelist on the traveling Pentecostal revival circuit with high energy performances and a grand singing voice, faced the future of a down and out convict.

But the man who originally arrested him in Macon all those years ago now is an inseparable friend and band mate who has helped turn Goldsparks back towards the light.
