Ash Smith has been DJing and making tunes in his spare time for the best part of two decades. After years of being in rock bands as a teenager, he discovered dance music in its many forms during the rave explosion in Britain during the early and mid-90s. He never looked back. His home town of Oxford was something of a hotbed for musical innovation at this time, being home to some of Drum&Bass's early innovators (DJ Lee, Total Science) as well as indie rock luminaries Radiohead. This, coupled with a strong free party scene and the city's proximity to London, made it almost impossible to avoid getting caught up in dance music culture. "For years, it seemed as though everyone I knew was an aspiring DJ, VJ, MC or producer." 

Ash began collecting records aged 16, initially dabbling in hardcore and jungle, before getting fully turned on to the harder-edged house and acid techno that the likes of Carl Cox, Dave Angel and Dave Clarke were playing at Final Frontier and the Tribal Gathering parties. He and his friends began putting on parties of their own at various places around Oxford, but it was difficult to make headway there in house and techno at that time, as the prevailing sound was D&B; playing a four-to-the-floor beat was the quickest way to clear a dancefloor. Close fiends began putting on nights at local bar The Dolly (now The Cellar), where they would play an eclectic mixture of hardcore, jungle, D&B as well as the Big Beat and nu-school breaks sounds that began to emerge in the late 90s. Ash was a permanent fixture at these events - in the crowd, if not behind the decks - though he'd already begun to steer away from DJing and to dabble in production, messing around with various pieces of hardware to create compositions of his own. These nights evolved into an organisation called Fresh Out The Box; a collective of DJs and promoters that is spiritual home to DJs Loudat, Kostas G, Ed Steele and DiScotty. As well as regular nights at The Cellar, FOTB ran some larger events at other venues in and around Oxford (most notably hosting Plump DJs at what is still considered a legendary party by those who were there) and also took charge of dance music duties at Oxford's home-grown boutique festival Truck and a stage at the emergent Gottwood festival in Wales. Although Ash would rarely perform at these events, he was kept involved in other ways - running lights or visuals and generally helping out wherever needed. He never lost his love of big beats and basslines. 

After relocating to Austin Texas in 2013, Ash was pleased to discover a small but vibrant techno scene in his new home. He became inspired to get behind the decks again. Here on his soundcloud you can find a few of his recent DJ mixes as well as one or two of his own production experiments.
