Fold

It's Wednesday, but I don't keep track of time.
I have a calendar with marks on all the pages in some sort of criss-cross design.
The other day, I think I stepped out of line, but the lines weren't clear and I didn't hear the message I was supposed to find.

I don't want to lose my grip on the little things I hold on to tightly.
So we travel on in hopes of being great, so someone might see what we're all about.

I bought a fish and I keep him in a bowl.
He never eats the food I give him.
I think his water's way too cold.
The stock market, where shares are bought and sold:
when your life is a gamble, you've gotta know when to fold.

And the poor don't seem to care
what's growing in their hair!
And all the wealthy stare - 
they'd rather be anywhere but here;
this isn't your bus to steer.
As the end draws near, you know there's nothing left to fear
but the horizon.

I try to sleep to find comfort in my dreams,
the nightmares drive me crazy with their reoccurring themes.
So why don't we divide off into teams?
and as we fight for the grand prize,
we'll wonder what all this means.
