The Brvtalist is pleased to host Catartsis - Press (Ōtone Repress). This composition comes off Ōtone and Catartsis' spilt EP, Mechanical Gesture, which OBSCUUR originally released digitally in August 2020. The EP was met with wide acclaim and supported by DJ Stingray, Martin Gore (Depeche Mode), Manni Dee, Machine Woman, Rommek and Tapefeed, OBSCUUR now brings us the vinyl issue of the EP which brings the pair's excellent work on to analog format. 

The artists explore, both in their collaborative and respective work, a wide spectrum of electronic and electroacoustic music with the practices of field recording and attentive listening at the core of their creative process. Inspired by musique concrète and electroacoustic sonic manipulations, they combine and alter sounds from the real, from their surroundings and from found (mainly metallic) objects. Stemming from this approach, they engage in rhythmical and textural research to elaborate a — peculiar, acousmatic and almost tangible — percussive and club-oriented music.

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track from 2 collaborating artists Catartsis & Ōtone. "Springs" comes off as a single on Berlin based ygam. 

As a foretaste of ygam's future publications, Catartsis & Ōtone share the single "Springs", a fizzy industrial techno track originally made in 2018 by altering and fusing an array of metal coil springs recordings. Although based on a steady 4-to-the-floor kick pattern, the track plays with the spiralling and unpredictable nature of the recordings' source to create a noisy and frisky piece of club-oriented music.

'The Collective Impact' is a compilation double vinyl LP from Berlin's @SubvertedScene label and party-series. The second project of such a size on the label, it assumes the same ethos that surrounds everything Subverted do: promoting non-binary, trans and female identifying artists working in the field of industrial techno, including @Otonenoto.

cplt presents his debut EP, “Rewording of a Tangible Abstraction”. 

The project is inspired by the artist’s childhood, spent immersed in textural ambient and drone soundscapes, both Eastern and Western classical traditions, world folk, together with the musique concrète inputs of friend and collaborator Ōtone (https://soundcloud.com/otonenoto). 

These themes are not only the aesthetics but also the center of, thoughts and technical process behind the creation of the pieces. The opening track, 'Kaspar is Moving Out' is entirely made with sampled material recorded from a mobile phone. The story goes that cplt’s host family was having a heated discussion during dinner time, which inspired the producer to take some time off his meal to go sound hunting around the house. Sonically, It’s a reference to cplt’s dedication to contrast, an interplay between tradition and future, harmony, atonality, and noise. The chants are the resonance of an admiration and respect to the first steps of western classical music history, a meaningful beginning to centuries of sonic discoveries. The opposing element tends to the present, and to the future, atonal, and amorphous. 

The second track “Nor here, Nor there” was made in a collaboration with sound artist and field recordist Ōtone. It is a tribute to the other universe of cplt’s childhood, Indian traditional music, and to his collaborator’s fascination for urban soundscapes. The piece is composed using an Indian harmonium, deconstructed and processed digitally, layered with Ōtone’s personal field recordings. 

For the wholesome experience, cplt recommends listening in a quiet confined environment, preferably seated or horizontally positioned, taking close attention to physical and psychological comfort.

Tentacular Kinship is the first release of suspension, gathering the multiple efforts of 18 artists in total, spread between Lisbon, Berlin, and London, united by an invisible yet powerful force of collaborative kinship - the very glue of our sound and practice.
After two years of existence of mina, suspension comes as an anarchic-womb/platform that delivers a compilation of rich and prismatic musicality raging from dreamscape ambient, promiscuous variations of techno, bass breakbeats, funk and dirt, among other variations of experimental electronic music.

It will have its official release on the 23rd of March at the suspension residency at Galeria Zé dos Bois, in Lisbon, comprising live acts, DJ sets, workshops, film screenings, panels, and performances.

The compilation is free. Feel free to acquire, to use, to play, re-edit, mashup, loop, recycle and spread its tentacles. Nonetheless, keep in mind the importance to share your creative sources and artistic references. 
All the donations will revert to the production of our next release.

Ōtone - Tetsu I

ygam presents a recording of Ōtone’s (@otonenoto) performance for the month of contemporary music at ACUD MACHT NEU (Berlin, Sept. 2019) - an improvisation on two metallic instruments of the 'Tetsu' series and field recordings.

The work of Ōtone (Pablo Diserens’ other moniker) is characterised by an ongoing investigation of abstract industrial soundscapes. In 2017, they started a collection/series of self-made metallic objects called 'Tetsu' that they use as compositional tools and performative instruments. On stage, Ōtone manipulates these instruments and blends them with material from their field recordings archive. Their timbers exploration plays with the listeners’ acoustic memory to create new sonic combinations and associations until another landscape emerges. In this recorded performance, Ōtone improvises on 'Tetsu I' and 'Tetsu III', elaborating slowly evolving percussive accumulations and wind-instrument-like frictions, while a drone made out of recordings of resonating metal bars gradually ascends. Subtle recordings of birds, water and sea urchins also appear throughout the performance giving an organic touch to the metallic soundscape at play.

Ōtone - performance for the month of contemporary music [ygm09]

The Brvtalist is thrilled to premiere, “In the years of salt lands”, a new track by Berlin-based producer and YGAM label founder Ōtone.  The track is part of a V/A compilation from the label titled, From Our Future Selves, which features 11 different artists such as Zagam, Nina Pixel, Diasiva, Forest People, cplt and many more.  The 12 track project is the label’s first various artist compilation and it was put together with all proceeds going to support Friends of the Earth - an organization aimed at challenging the current model of economic and corporate globalization, while promoting solutions that help to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies. 

“In The Years Of Salts Lands” kicks off with cold industrial beats, accompanied by repetitive metallic frictions creating an oppressing atmosphere. The second part of the track explores a more rhythmical aspect of techno with slight break beats thus delivering a nearly tribal effect.

Made using field recordings from various sources, the main one being an industrial paper cutting machine, “Slice” is a pummeling rhythmic work that cuts deeper than it sounds.
