I am working on a multi-fx plugin, which incorporates many modules from Plasmonic. It has a flexible and pretty unique patching structure, and lots of modulation capabilities. These are short demos I made, perhaps a bit over the top, but I'm having a lot of fun making crazy patches with it.

Concept Samples - Melodic Trance

Adrian Lane, from Southend, Essex, UK returns to Whitelabrecs with his latest masterpiece, 'Vignettes' following ‘The Fleet’ (2021) and ‘Missing The Crows’ (2022). Having previously released with respected labels like Preserved Sound, Hibernate, Oscarson and Chitra, Adrian’s musical journey now spans 13 albums, not to mention the music he self-releases from time to time.

Adrian Lane's musical career began in his teenage years playing in bands before ultimately evolving into an 11-year solo career. His creative process involves recording and mixing at home, blending acoustic instruments with synths and virtual elements, whilst simultaneously exploring visual art ideas to accompany his music. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of genres, his influences include luminaries such as Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Johan Johannson, Hildur Gudnadottir, and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

'Vignettes' is a captivating exploration of Lane's sonic landscape. The album features work created using a minimal studio setup, with a focus on piano and strings. Musically, there are two distinct aspects to the album. Roughly half the tracks revolve around the piano, while the other half are string quartet-based, showcasing Lane's ability to compose using counterpoint and the techniques of stretto fuga. The interplay between the piano and strings creates a dynamic journey for the listener and this is enhanced by the fact that the instruments vary between real and virtual.

True to its name, 'Vignettes' unfolds like a series of evocative snapshots. 'Vignette: a brief evocative description, account, or episode' - The dictionary definition pretty much describes the conceptual approach for this album. It gathers together a collection of musical vignettes, each track telling a story or setting a mood in a concise period, inspired by haiku poems; the pieces capture fleeting moments of emotional depth. The work is complete with Adrian’s own photomontage artwork, which is used across the three panels of the gatefold sleeve.

Ümit Kurt is a historian of the modern Middle East, with a research focus on the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. He is currently Assistant Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industry, and Social Sciences (History) and an affiliate of the Centre for the Study of Violence at the University of Newcastle, Australia. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he is the author of award-winning book, The Armenians of Aintab: The Economics of Genocide in an Ottoman Province (Harvard University Press, 2021) and the co-author of The Spirit of the Laws: The Plunder of Wealth in the Armenian Genocide (Berghahn, 2017). He is now working on his third book manuscript project on the global patterns of mass violence in the Ottoman borderlands in the 1860s-1920s.

Sam Dolbee is Assistant Professor of History at Vanderbilt University, where he teaches classes on environment, disease, and the modern Middle East. His book Locusts of Power is out now with Cambridge University Press.

E417 | After their expulsion from the Iberian peninsula during the 15th century, Jewish communities settled throughout the Mediterranean, with many finding new homes in the cities of the ascendant Ottoman Empire. Centuries later, Ottoman Jews descended from this early modern diaspora still spoke a language related to Spanish, often referred to as Ladino. During the late 19th century, a new wave of migration out of the Eastern Mediterranean began, giving rise to a modern Sephardi diaspora of migrants from modern-day Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, and other parts of the former Ottoman world. As our guest Devi Mays explains in this interview, the Iberian heritage and language of these migrants played a distinct role in their global migration experience, as many ended up settling in countries like Mexico, Cuba, and Argentina. In this episode, we explore the history of the modern Sephardi diaspora and its relationship to the history of Mexico. In some cases, Ladino-speaking Jews from the former Ottoman Empire appeared as welcome immigrants in Mexico even when Jews from other parts of the world faced discrimination and increased immigration restriction during the 20th century. In other cases, Iberian heritage meant that Jews looking to settle in the United States could pass as Mexican or Cuban nationals when seeking to cross the border. Through the individual experiences and lives that comprise the modern Sephardi diaspora, we highlight the unique experiences of migrants mediated by gender and class, and we appreciate the strategies such people developed to navigate an increasingly anti-immigrant world.

Devi Mays is Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Fellow at the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies. After receiving her Ph.D. in Jewish History from Indiana University in 2013, she was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Jewish Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She has published in Mashriq and Mahjar: Journal of Middle East Migration Studies, and has translated for Sephardi Lives: A Documentary History, Julia Phillips Cohen and Sarah Abrevaya Stein, ed. (Stanford UP, 2014). Her work has appeared in several edited collections, including World War I and the Jews (Berghahn Books, 2017), and Jews and the Mediterranean (Indiana University Press, forthcoming). She is currently revising a book manuscript, tentatively entitled Forging Ties, Forging Passports: Migration and the Modern Sephardi Diaspora.

Chris Gratien is Assistant Professor of History at University of Virginia, where he teaches classes on global environmental history and the Middle East. He is currently preparing a monograph about the environmental history of the Cilicia region of the former Ottoman Empire from the 1850s until the 1950s.
