"Düve is a very mysterious project, probably due to the intense (albeit exotic) eastern folk instrumentation that populate their sonic structures. René Audiard & Ali Çakır have been exploring a bit of it all from crunchy techno grooves to emotionally charged slow drives, and together they managed to create a very peculiar sonic balance that captivates from the moment it passes our ears. 
 
   Düve’s “Hargate” is a four-part voyage through the intricate musical roots, complex poli-rhythms and warm musicality of the eastern mediterranean lands. ’Esti’ (A1) starts the EP in pure instrumental glory. Played by Adam Birson, the melody from the Oud is loud, ethereal and emotionally charged, topped with sparkles of modulated synth patterns and pulsing noises for full meditative effect. The EP’s title track ‘Hargate’ (A2) is soaked in a sort of nostalgia for sun-bathed Turkish soils, but under it there’s an ever-moving train of remarkable rhythmic endulgence and a very human sense of groove. A tour-de-force in balance between musicality and arrangement that stays with you like fata morgana. 

The flip-side goes deeper and darker in ambience. While ‘Yek Tas’ (B1) is a 4-by-4 hichhicker’s guide through underground Istanbul and built around the tension and release of drum-echoes and reverberized pads, “Sehayat” (B2) brings back the sound (and emotion) of Ali’s darbuka/santur and Soren’s complex drum arrangements for a slow, dreamy drive. 

   This EP was visually interpreted by Juli Jah in a hand-made artistic depiction of Istanbul, extraordinarily fitting to this installment of an ever strengthening series of releases Pluie/Noir collectors grew accustomed to. Limited Pressing."

testing out the more, mmm, mellow? side of the non linear circuits 'digital filter simulator' (DFS)

patch notes: a noodle from sheep caught in the morphagene, which is then multed out to clouds in parasite granular (pitched all the way down) as well as the DFS (which is also being hit with purple + white noise mixed at the second input) + polivoks vcf (bandpass out) combo. this duo is crossfaded between each other and then randomly panned in the stereo field along with a second sheep noodle caught in the modcan cv record, quanta noise  and white noise. modulation spread out across the whole mess via 3 channels of random from batumi and maths ch1 through let's splosh (which is also cross modulating batumi and maths for extra weirdness)

last thing to note i suppose, is the DFS is not receiving a clock at its clock input, but rather using the morphagene loop as its clock due to internal normalization (or so says the panel?) the DFS gets more and more sputtery here the closer the rate knob reaches 0

"Quarantine Supercut"

“Quarantine Supercut” was built from the submissions of many people who responded to a public call for field recordings of the sounds of life under quarantine. The first week there were forty sounds sent to the Creative Independent, the second week sixty more, the third week another eighty more. On top of that, as word spread about the project even more people began to email me directly with their sounds, and many people sent multiple files; by the deadline, roughly two hundred participants had sent me about three hundred sounds total. There are submissions from across the United States (New York to Kentucky, California to the Carolinas), and from across the planet: there were submissions from Italy, Germany, Mexico, Czech Republic, India, Kenya and many anonymous and untitled submissions of unknown origin.
 
Though I eliminated submissions that were recordings of music, I tried to use as many submissions as I could. I used EQ to try to clean up and focus each sound, but I did not otherwise process or manipulate these sounds. Sometimes, a single sound is heard in isolation. At other times, I decided to cluster and overlay the sounds into distinct areas (at its densest there are twelve separate layers playing simultaneously). The piece is divided into an indoor section and an outdoor section, with subthemes (cooking, pets, childcare, working from home, online learning, wildlife/birds, coughs, public announcements). Sometimes the threat of the coronavirus is front and center; sometimes it’s far in the background. The emotional response to sound is subjective and varies from listener to listener, but I hear many different attitudes towards quarantine within these recordings; domestic calm, annoyance, dread, humor, and the sound of making do.
 
I’m grateful to The Creative Independent for asking me to do this, and to everyone who took part in the project and trusted me with their sounds. While creating the piece, I struggled with the conclusion: how long will this go on? How will it end?  Ultimately, I chose recordings of a passing train, and of neighbors talking to each other across the distance of a balcony. I wanted to remind us of the fragile social links that persist even in the midst of isolation.
