Following a panel discussion - 'Bitch, bint, and maid: exploring sexist language in the dictionary' hosted by Oxford University Press to mark this year's International Women's Day, we got together with Eleanor Maier, Executive Editor on the Oxford English Dictionary, and Professor Helen Taylor, Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Exeter, to carry on the conversation. The conversation was hosted by Ella Percival, Head of Communications for OUP's Academic Division and all-around dictionaries enthusiast.
 
Eleanor Maier is a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary. She is responsible for the dictionary’s revision group who revise, update, and expand OED content to make sure entries give the clearest, most accurate account of a word's meaning, history, and development.

Helen Taylor is Emeritus Professor of English, University of Exeter, Honorary Fellow of the British Association of American Studies, and Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow 2016-18. She has taught English and American Literature at the universities of Bristol, West of England, Warwick and Exeter (where she was Head of the School of English). She has published widely on English and American literature and culture, and has directed and curated many literary festivals. She was the first Director of the Liverpool Literary Festival. Publications include Scarlett's Women: Gone With the Wind and its Female Fans, The Daphne du Maurier Companion, and Circling Dixie: Contemporary Southern Culture through a Transatlantic Lens. Her latest book is Why Women Read Fiction: The Stories of Our Lives.

Ella Percival is Head of Communications for OUP’s academic publishing. She has worked closely with the Oxford Languages team over a number of years and has observed first-hand the way in which issues of language and gender can be incredibly emotive and spark wide-ranging debate with the general public.

Blow, blow, thou winter wind - Sarah Quartel

In 'Grown about by fragrant bushes', Skempton sets a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson using gentle, lilting melodies. The theme of loss is sensitively conveyed in a tonal language that is made more expressive through the use of chromaticism. The voices move homophonically throughout and changing time signatures aid the movement of the piece.

This unique three-movement work combines the harmonic language of Indian classical Raags (Raag Hamsadhwani, Raag Malkauns, and Raag Ahir Bhairav, respectively) with specially written texts by poet Rebecca Gayle Howell. These three eco-carols, entitled 'We look for you', 'The year's midnight', and 'The unexpected early hour' centre around evening, midnight, and daybreak (linked to the Christian services of Evensong, Matins, and Lauds), and use imagery from nature to reflect on the message of the Christmas story. The first two movements have a serene and pensive atmosphere that contrasts with the third movement, which uses an energetic compound time signature and bell-like melodic shapes.

This simple setting of words by Tennyson reflects a different side to McGlade's compositional style, without sacrificing any of her trademark characteristics. The largely homophonic vocal lines move as one, with clarity and poise in abundance, creating a bed of sound over which the cello gently glides.

Revisiting Toxic Masculinity and #MeToo - Episode 85 - The Oxford Comment

Democracy - The Very Short Introductions Podcast - Episode 76

Ancient Greek and Roman Science - The Very Short Introductions Podcast - Episode 79

On this episode of The Side Comment, Richard English discusses the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts, as a less extensively examined phenomenon. Through a series of questions, he explores why it is an important topic for us to look at in a new way that considers successes and failures. Highlighting the case studies contained within his book, 'Does Counter-Terrorism Work?,' he illustrates how we can identify broader intuitions about what works well, and what doesn’t.

Richard English is Director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security, and Justice at Queen's University Belfast. His books include 'Does Terrorism Work? A History' (2016), and 'The Oxford Handbook of Terrorism' (co-edited, 2019). He is a Fellow of the British Academy, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, an Honorary Fellow of Keble College Oxford, a Faculty Affiliate at the University of Chicago, and an Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews. In 2018 he was awarded a CBE for services to the understanding of modern-day terrorism and political history.

Harris discusses the history of the Church of  Latter-Day Saints complicated—and often controversial racial heritage—from Joseph Smith and Brigham Young through the civil rights movement to the moment in 1978 when church President Spencer W. Kimball finally opened the priesthood to include Black members of the church.  

Matthew Harris is Professor of History at Colorado State University Pueblo; he specializes in race and religion, civil rights, Mormon history, African American History, and American Religious history. His latest book 'Second-Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality' published by Oxford University Press takes a deep look at the history of Black Mormons and the struggle for racial equality within the church.

Natalie Kerr & Jaime Kurtz on Loneliness - Episode 45 - The Side Comment

On this episode, Andrea Temkin-Yu, author of the new guidebook 'Supporting Your Teens Mental Health,' talks about the small, intentional activities that all parents of teens can adopt in order to focus on building connections and combating the rise of mental health symptoms in adolescents.

Andrea Temkin-Yu is Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, having earned her PsyD from The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. She completed her clinical internship at Bellevue Hospital Center/New York University Child Study Center and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Youth Mental Health at Weill Cornell Medicine. Temkin-Yu specializes in parent-focused interventions and has expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and disruptive behaviors. Her research focuses on transdiagnostic interventions and improving treatments for youth and parents through technology.

O sing unto the Lord – Cecilia McDowall

This is a funky arrangement of Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' with an English text by Henry van Dyke. Milloy jazzes up the well-known melody by arranging it in 12/8 time and adding syncopation, while supporting it with a groovy piano accompaniment and optional bass part. Originally published in Pop Voiceworks 2.

This secular work for upper voices sensitively sets Langston Hughes's poem of the same name. A lilting melodic line, eloquent part-writing, and an effective piano part combine to create a piece that will appeal to both youth and adult upper-voice choirs. In time of silver rain - Sarah Quartel

'I remember' sets a text reflecting on the wonder of the natural world and the people who shape our lives. The stirring melody calls to mind the folksong tradition, and is underpinned by a gently flowing piano accompaniment. Also available in a version for SA and piano.
