Following the May release of his debut album “Rising Despite Circumstances” we celebrate Adam Gillett’s record with a very special collection of interpretations and reimaginings “Rising Despite Circumstances: Remixed”.

For this collection we’ve assembled a truly monumental troupe of producers to give their takes on the anthemic and ethereal originals and the 11 takes that comprise this remix record represent a staggeringly diverse breadth of styles, genres, and tones all while keeping the heart of the original record beating.

Brooklyn based artist Luko M kicks off the proceedings with a lush gently glitchy rearrangement of the album opener “Can We Do Better?” answered by UK producer Grant Deane’s hauntingly ethereal and tender rework of the same tune. Our good friend, Bay area’s Benito keeps things airy on his sparse and gorgeous take on “Like An Animal” giving way to King Grump’s endlessly groovy flip of “Reap What You Sow”. Aussie art pop duo Ducks! turn “Still Going Round In Circles” into a delicious dub odyssey, leading the way for German system heater expert Dogpatrol to melt some faces with a simply rude bass driven take on “Like An Animal”.

Ibiza based Woodland Creature Tsodor turns up with the kind of dancefloor smasher he’s made a name for unleashing upon unexpecting dancers with his storming “Reap What You Sow” flip - opening the floor for living legend Timo Maas’s simply devastating DJ weapon of a rework of mid album banger “Check Yo Stamina On The Reg”. Keeping the dancefloor moving comes Special Zip’s gloriously playful and infectiously vibey play with “Like An Animal”. Midlands resident breaks enthusiast Rawtrachs drops a decidedly euphoric and old school take on the same track before the record comes to stunning conclusion with long time collaborator and dear friend Justin Margovan’s complex, driving and deeply atmospheric rework of “Reap What You Sow” as Nihon Ten.

The element of surprise sparks the imagination as Afterlife defy everyday expectation by virtue of Resistance. Or to put into Steve Miller’s own words: Resistance to any person or thing that in any way degrades the natural experience of human life on this planet is a necessary balancing force at this point in our evolution.

This moment’s decay is bound up with a longing for a better tomorrow. The impulse of that feeling beats throughout the heart of each track with the music proposing a revolution in culture: freedom to think for yourself. That defining, searing intensity is then hardwired directly into the soul of the title track Resistance, its reference to the fractured dream of Detroit alongside the percussive punctuation of Afterlife’s Balearic notation infuse the music with the spirit of meaning, speaking in wordless motion. Dancing to the tune of fierce percussion amid swirls of atmospheric intensity, plus the grainy resolution of bass, Steve’s brilliant series of EP’s are now elevated into another realm of possibility by defiantly exercising a resistant return to the dancefloor.

Antifearance seeks to reverse the climate of fear charged by a barrage of roaring synthesizers primed and set to stun. It’s excitable escapade in demanding rhythms roll out across the floor reaching a tantalising, uncompromising conclusion igniting a playfully subversive Afterlife in the process (while remembering the provocative echo of Patrick Cowley).

A most welcome addition on this release are the two remixes of Resistance featuring Deep House evangelists, Hardway Bros. Inspired by the originals escape into subterranean adventure the motor city is again alluded to by the brush of timeless basslines and drum machines - their use of the words Transmat Dub speaks volumes. The results are needless to say inspired and inspiring…

When we think about Austrian house, Demuja is likely to come top of mind, yet closely followed with a staple artist of the Viennese thriving underground scene: Felix B. Nowak. a.k.a. Jon Gravy. Jon kicked off his career quite early, starting to produce his first track at the age of 17 and has now been blessing us with quality music for approximately 10 years. He first developed strong connections with South African grooves and 70s soul music from his dad's vinyl collection, before getting inspired by house and techno pioneers such as Paul Johnson or Underground Resistance. Jon's productions are quite easy to spot: upbeat and groove-ridden house against a backdrop of driving and stinging basslines that you could find on labels like Neo Violence, Blaq Numbers or Rough Recordings. He is also known as the owner of the record label “Step Back Trax” and its event series (Super Motel 168) which has already welcomed lots of worldwide house names (Baltra, KETTAMA or Adryiano). Actually, nothing could currently stop him as he has just founded his second record label "Gravy Trax" and released his own album on it.

We all hope we will get to be dancing again soon this year, but for now, this one should definitely be enough: 60 minutes of both classy and dirty house vibes featuring jams from Lood, Palms Trax or Mogwaa. People, this is assuredly the only way to enter 2021 properly!

My guest this month is George Crowther AKA @mrsassdj A Close friend of mine whose track selection lends itself perfectly to the Cosmos sound. A man who lives with the heart of the white isle in his veins. 

His mix holds a strong narrative about the head space a lot of us have been through; darkness into a crescendo of power and optimism.
