Heresy VI: In the sixth circle, the Epicureans, who denied the immortality of the soul in life, are condemned to lie in flaming uncapped graves. Dante speaks with a Florentine epicurean, Farinata degli Uberti, a gibelino (condemned posthumously for heresy in 1283); and Cavalcante dei Cavalcanti, a güelfo and father of Guido Cavalcanti, friend of Dante and poet. The political affiliations of these two men create a discussion about Florentine politics (Canto X).

In response to a question from Dante about the prophecy he received, Farinata explains that the soul in Hell can see the future but not the present. Consequently, when they "approach or are", it is all in vain their intellect.

Treachery IX: The ninth circle is surrounded by classic and biblical giants, who perhaps symbolize pride and other spiritual defects that hide behind acts of treason.The giants are lying on the ground and therefore can be seen from above. Among them is Nemrod and Efialtes, who with his brother Otus tried to defeat Olympus. The giant Anteo is in the well that forms the ninth circle (Canto XXXI).

The traitors differ from the "simple" fraudulent by the fact that their actions involve cheating someone with whom they have a special relationship. There are four concentric zones (or "rounds") of traitors, corresponding, in order of seriousness, to betrayals of a family member, to someone with community ties, to guests, and to the feudal lord. In contrast to the popular image of Hell as fiery, traitors are frozen in an ice lake known as Cocito, where each group is embedded at ever greater depths.
