Hey everyone..

So the switch to Traktor was a success, great bit of kit and with apologies to Serato fans, imo a higher level. 

This has taken me a little longer to put out than hoped for but that was more to being time strapped than Traktor (although you be the judge :)). 

More of a commercial vibe this one than normal - heavy on the vocals, fit for parties of all shapes and sizes. Long may they now continue.

OB008 - Different Gravy

Hola amigos.

A slight hiatus in uploading something new, hot on the heels of the Traktor purchased in spring I've taken the plunge on some XDJ700s and an Allen & Heath mixer after playing an event with @ricochet1 and realising that super hot venues and laptops do not mix well! 

I can finally put to bed the tussle of controller v CDJs which has raged on in my head for two years now and use the controller for home mixing and recording and the sturdier equipment for abusing away from the neighbours :).

Just an hour this time but hopefully a goodie. It perhaps could have benefitted from just one or two more recording attempts before upload but with a DJ OB junior just a few weeks away now I'm feeling more time poor than normal :o. 

No tracklist for this one as a few tracks are mixed over the top of each other, sure some of them are familiar anyway...

Next output hopefully something for the Xmas hols (if not before with @ricochet1),

Welcome to the first ever instalment of Outdoor Tapes! A brand new concept mixtape series designed to help you conquer the wilderness.

Our first contribution comes courtesy of founder and host, Ollie Blears. 

Ollie tells us about his project:

"Music and outdoor adventure have been huge passions of mine for so many years. My habitual activity is long distance trail running, and when training or deep in a multi-stage ultra marathon, the euphoric feeling which can come about when plugged into a mix and moving quickly through the trails is unbeatable. 

In Outdoor Tapes, I wanted to bottle that feeling in one place with guest contributors also sharing the music which really uplifts them when outdoors. Each mix is intentionally personal with no guidelines or criteria set as to selection or length. In doing so, the ambition is that the mixtape series in time becomes a broad church of influences, genres and selections for listeners to explore. 

This first mix is one I prepared ahead of the Barcelona marathon in 2023. I hope you enjoy."

Outdoor Tapes E01 | Ollie Blears

This month, we're delighted to introduce the first member of the OT family. Feel like escaping reality for a couple of hours? ADI has got you covered.

London-based DJ, radio presenter, occasional party starter and music obsessive, ADI primarily dabbles these days in the blissful aural delights of sunshine music, ideally soundtracking swimming pools and sunsets.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

I’ve always loved most genres of electronic music, and my ears are constantly picking up new interests, with a million different playlists constantly being added to with the intention of someday doing a mix of that particular sound.

This mix is something I’d had in mind for quite a while, after attending Snowbombing festival back in 2022. One of my mates was talking about how much he loves listening to music as he snowboards down the mountain, and asked me if I had any different playlists or mixes I could suggest for him, and in that incredible landscape it felt like it needed something that was atmospheric, but with the energy of electronic beats. While I didn’t have anything quite like it at the time, I knew what I wanted to create, and nearly two years later, the perfect reason to finally pull my finger out and do the mix came around; Outdoor Tapes.

It's a long mix at over two and a half hours, but I’ve tried to structure it in such a way that it fits with a few hours on the slopes. Starting gently you get the lift up, slowly ascending past the tree line, and up over the crest to see the amazing white mountain, before getting tougher as you start your descent on your first run. The mix kind of ebbs and flows with that “gentle up and exhilarating down” in mind.

It's definitely a departure for me in terms of the style I would normally play, but it felt really good to give the musical legs a stretch and try something out of the ordinary.

Outdoor Tapes E02 | ADI

The days are short, the air is cold, and getting outdoors is just that little bit harder. Fear not, our third instalment from the prince of Peckham himself, Josh Price, is piping hot.

Josh has been making and playing music since picking up a trumpet as a young lad, although nowadays his main musical outlets are DJing and producing music.

If you gave Josh carte blanche on the decks you would probably find yourself being led between housey bangers, synthy interludes, trippy techno and the odd 80s rework. Production-wise, lately it’s been a mixture of italo disco and breaky vocal remixes.

Over to the man with the 'Midas Touch'...

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

I saw this as a bit of an opportunity to play some (IMO) beautiful electronic tracks that are not really intended or suitable for the dancefloor. Some of them are deeply introspective, others have a kind of grand cinematic optimism, a few just have an ASMRy feel that is gorgeous on the ears. When I was putting this together I kept coming back to the idea of being on a hike somewhere, with no-one around for miles – grand vistas and wide valleys and the odd ray of sunshine poking through the clouds before the mist rolls in.

No need to find a mountain to enjoy this though – it is just as happy accompanying you on a wander around Nunhead Cemetery or a stroll up Telegraph Hill.

Outdoor Tapes E03 | Josh Price

Our fourth instalment of the series features a DJ for whom records and mixing has been part of his life's fabric. Growing up with a pair of 1210s in the house thanks to his dad's love of DJ'ing, Gav began mixing in his early teenage years.

In the '00s, Gav played across London club institutions such as Fabric, The Cross, Cable, Ministry of Sound, The Key, Turnmills and was even resident at The Egg for a while. That's quite the roll call...

These days, having swapped the frenetic pace of East London for the serenity of Bude in Cornwall, Gav can be found masquerading under the moniker of Franky Knuckles Pizza (@frankyknucklespizza) on IG as a very talented artisan pizza maker. Trust us when we say the account is a visual feast...

An all-vinyl selection, this mix comes in hotter than a Diavola...

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

To be honest I tried not to think about it too much, I had a feeling the other mixes would be quite eclectic so I wanted to do something that I’d want to hear on a night out, but also, would be ideal for a long run, so something with enough energy to keep you going that extra mile. I chose tracks that spanned the last 15 -20 years that I feel still  sound relevant now.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

This is a tough one. I’d have to say Fabric main room was a stand out moment, The Cross before it closed down was another highlight. Being flown to Columbia to play a gig in Bogota was pretty epic. Lokee was an amazing party in it’s day, also Jaded back at AKA before it shut down was special too. 

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO PLUG (AND DOESN'T FEATURE IN THE MIX)?

I’d have to say producers like August Jakobsen, Dexter Kane, Michael Jansons, Vs Mode, Cozzy D, all friends and all inspirational, not only talented producers but really nice people, theres a lot of ego in the DJ scene but these boys are salt of the earth.

Outdoor Tapes E04 | Gav Memnos

Our next instalment of the series is here and it's the perfect blend of why we created Outdoor Tapes in the first place. 

We first discovered @Tidy-Daps a few years ago via their channel and the treasure chest of "Tidy Vibes" mixes which Tommy Doctor and Tim Haze consistently put out (143 and counting!). 

Their music has appeared on over 40 labels worldwide including Nite Grooves, Milk & Sugar, and Deepalma and as DJs either together or individually they’ve played international festivals such as Creamfields and world-renowned clubs such as Ministry of Sound and Pacha London...so we're absolutely thrilled that they agreed to contribute as one of our early guests to the series.

2023 saw Tidy Daps continue their prolific release schedule and play some memorable gigs in Barcelona, while 2004 promises even more releases on labels such as Nordic Voyage, Ready Mix Records, Personal Belongings and DeepClass Records.

This mix is one you can rinse and repeat time and again, perfect for getting out there this weekend. Enjoy. X

Outdoor Tapes E05 | Tidy Daps

To deliver our sixth instalment of the series we have the wonderful nongfaye (@nongfaye).

We've been bestowed a truly eclectic range of genres so far and nongfaye adds a further dimension with an immersive journey through nostalgic trip-hop and downtempo electronic. From the first few minutes of this recording we knew we were on to a winner, and so we're absolutely thrilled to have nongfaye join the OT collective.

Based in East London, nongfaye has been an avid collector for many years and started her DJ career only a few years ago. These days, she can be found spinning records on the last Friday of every month at the Shoreditch Wine House (@shoreditchwinehouse).

Alongside Mooreo (@elmooreo) she is also the co-creator and resident of ‘Ice Cream’, a bi-annual party at @RollingStock in East London where you can expect friendly house party vibes in an intimate setting and a top tier sound system.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

One of my biggest music influences comes from a Saturday job I had as a teenager in a streetwear and skateboard shop called Hoax in Ipswich. It was in the early 2000’s and I was introduced to trip-hop and downtempo electronic music and have loved those styles ever since.  Genres of music perfect for the outdoors. 

I wanted to create something atmospheric that takes you on a journey and I imagine marching through a forest or reaching the peak on a mountain hike, but also to be enjoyed sat round a campfire in the wilderness with friends.  

The Outdoor Tapes mix has enabled me to delve into my old CD collection, mixed with some of my favourite recent finds.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

Dreamachine (IG: @drea_m_achine) - it’s a multi-disciplined, immersive art experience that explores the power of our minds. It has the most amazing 3D sound production by Jon Hopkins and is an incredible project.

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO PLUG (AND DOESN'T FEATURE IN THE MIX)?

My recent favourite finds are in the mix, Cabaret Nocturne, Japanese Limo Boys (featured twice!) and Que Sakamoto - saw him play in a club in Buenos Aries by chance and he’s a really interesting DJ and producer.

As One Radio's Unessential Mix With Ollie

First mix from me this year. I hope you enjoy. I had originally anticipated producing a two-part mix with this mix being the second ‘La Selva - By Night’ side and a lighter daytime session mix being a ‘La Selva - By Day’ first instalment, but I ended up getting cold feet over some of the lighter selections and so I’m afraid it’s the deeper selection only. Perhaps once the sun and warmth return later this year I will feel inspired to record ‘By Day’ 😊.

This will probably be my last recorded set on the trusty Serato DDJ-SD3 as I want to treat myself to the next step up in kit and I think that’s looking like a switch to Traktor and the S4 MK3 having played alongside some friends last year who owned the latter which made me very jealous. Next mix to follow once I’ve relearnt to DJ with the new tools…until then, peace. X

Founder and host, Ollie Blears, tells us about his project:

"Music and outdoor adventure have been huge passions of mine for so many years. My habitual activity is long distance trail running, and when training or deep in a multi-stage ultra marathon, the euphoric feeling which can come about when plugged into a mix and moving quickly through the trails is unbeatable. 

In Outdoor Tapes, I wanted to bottle that feeling in one place with guest contributors also sharing the music which really uplifts them when outdoors. Each mix is intentionally personal with no guidelines or criteria set as to selection or length. In doing so, the ambition is that over time the mixtape series becomes a broad church of influences, genres and selections for listeners to explore."
