Outdoor Tapes

Hola amigos.

A slight hiatus in uploading something new, hot on the heels of the Traktor purchased in spring I've taken the plunge on some XDJ700s and an Allen & Heath mixer after playing an event with @ricochet1 and realising that super hot venues and laptops do not mix well! 

I can finally put to bed the tussle of controller v CDJs which has raged on in my head for two years now and use the controller for home mixing and recording and the sturdier equipment for abusing away from the neighbours :).

Just an hour this time but hopefully a goodie. It perhaps could have benefitted from just one or two more recording attempts before upload but with a DJ OB junior just a few weeks away now I'm feeling more time poor than normal :o. 

No tracklist for this one as a few tracks are mixed over the top of each other, sure some of them are familiar anyway...

Next output hopefully something for the Xmas hols (if not before with @ricochet1),

OB009 - Tune Inn

Welcome to the first ever instalment of Outdoor Tapes! A brand new concept mixtape series designed to help you conquer the wilderness.

Our first contribution comes courtesy of founder and host, Ollie B. 

Ollie tells us about his project:

"Music and outdoor adventure have been huge passions of mine for so many years. My habitual activity is long distance trail running, and when training or deep in a multi-stage ultra marathon, the euphoric feeling which can come about when plugged into a mix and moving quickly through the trails is unbeatable. 

In Outdoor Tapes, I wanted to bottle that feeling in one place with guest contributors also sharing the music which really uplifts them when outdoors. Each mix is intentionally personal with no guidelines or criteria set as to selection or length. In doing so, the ambition is that the mixtape series in time becomes a broad church of influences, genres and selections for listeners to explore. 

This first mix is one I prepared ahead of the Barcelona marathon in 2023. I hope you enjoy."

Outdoor Tapes E01 | Ollie B

This month, we're delighted to introduce the first member of the OT family. Feel like escaping reality for a couple of hours? ADI has got you covered.

London-based DJ, radio presenter, occasional party starter and music obsessive, ADI primarily dabbles these days in the blissful aural delights of sunshine music, ideally soundtracking swimming pools and sunsets.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

I’ve always loved most genres of electronic music, and my ears are constantly picking up new interests, with a million different playlists constantly being added to with the intention of someday doing a mix of that particular sound.

This mix is something I’d had in mind for quite a while, after attending Snowbombing festival back in 2022. One of my mates was talking about how much he loves listening to music as he snowboards down the mountain, and asked me if I had any different playlists or mixes I could suggest for him, and in that incredible landscape it felt like it needed something that was atmospheric, but with the energy of electronic beats. While I didn’t have anything quite like it at the time, I knew what I wanted to create, and nearly two years later, the perfect reason to finally pull my finger out and do the mix came around; Outdoor Tapes.

It's a long mix at over two and a half hours, but I’ve tried to structure it in such a way that it fits with a few hours on the slopes. Starting gently you get the lift up, slowly ascending past the tree line, and up over the crest to see the amazing white mountain, before getting tougher as you start your descent on your first run. The mix kind of ebbs and flows with that “gentle up and exhilarating down” in mind.

It's definitely a departure for me in terms of the style I would normally play, but it felt really good to give the musical legs a stretch and try something out of the ordinary.

Outdoor Tapes E02 | ADI

The days are short, the air is cold, and getting outdoors is just that little bit harder. Fear not, our third instalment from the prince of Peckham himself, Josh Price, is piping hot.

Josh has been making and playing music since picking up a trumpet as a young lad, although nowadays his main musical outlets are DJing and producing music.

If you gave Josh carte blanche on the decks you would probably find yourself being led between housey bangers, synthy interludes, trippy techno and the odd 80s rework. Production-wise, lately it’s been a mixture of italo disco and breaky vocal remixes.

Over to the man with the 'Midas Touch'...

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

I saw this as a bit of an opportunity to play some (IMO) beautiful electronic tracks that are not really intended or suitable for the dancefloor. Some of them are deeply introspective, others have a kind of grand cinematic optimism, a few just have an ASMRy feel that is gorgeous on the ears. When I was putting this together I kept coming back to the idea of being on a hike somewhere, with no-one around for miles – grand vistas and wide valleys and the odd ray of sunshine poking through the clouds before the mist rolls in.

No need to find a mountain to enjoy this though – it is just as happy accompanying you on a wander around Nunhead Cemetery or a stroll up Telegraph Hill.

Outdoor Tapes E03 | Josh Price

Our fourth instalment of the series features a DJ for whom records and mixing has been part of his life's fabric. Growing up with a pair of 1210s in the house thanks to his dad's love of DJ'ing, Gav began mixing in his early teenage years.

In the '00s, Gav played across London club institutions such as Fabric, The Cross, Cable, Ministry of Sound, The Key, Turnmills and was even resident at The Egg for a while. That's quite the roll call...

These days, having swapped the frenetic pace of East London for the serenity of Bude in Cornwall, Gav can be found masquerading under the moniker of Franky Knuckles Pizza (@frankyknucklespizza) on IG as a very talented artisan pizza maker. Trust us when we say the account is a visual feast...

An all-vinyl selection, this mix comes in hotter than a Diavola...

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

To be honest I tried not to think about it too much, I had a feeling the other mixes would be quite eclectic so I wanted to do something that I’d want to hear on a night out, but also, would be ideal for a long run, so something with enough energy to keep you going that extra mile. I chose tracks that spanned the last 15 -20 years that I feel still  sound relevant now.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

This is a tough one. I’d have to say Fabric main room was a stand out moment, The Cross before it closed down was another highlight. Being flown to Columbia to play a gig in Bogota was pretty epic. Lokee was an amazing party in it’s day, also Jaded back at AKA before it shut down was special too. 

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO PLUG (AND DOESN'T FEATURE IN THE MIX)?

I’d have to say producers like August Jakobsen, Dexter Kane, Michael Jansons, Vs Mode, Cozzy D, all friends and all inspirational, not only talented producers but really nice people, theres a lot of ego in the DJ scene but these boys are salt of the earth.

Outdoor Tapes E04 | Gav Memnos

Our next instalment of the series is here and it's the perfect blend of why we created Outdoor Tapes in the first place. 

We first discovered @Tidy-Daps a few years ago via their channel and the treasure chest of "Tidy Vibes" mixes which Tommy Doctor and Tim Haze consistently put out (143 and counting!). 

Their music has appeared on over 40 labels worldwide including Nite Grooves, Milk & Sugar, and Deepalma and as DJs either together or individually they’ve played international festivals such as Creamfields and world-renowned clubs such as Ministry of Sound and Pacha London...so we're absolutely thrilled that they agreed to contribute as one of our early guests to the series.

2023 saw Tidy Daps continue their prolific release schedule and play some memorable gigs in Barcelona, while 2004 promises even more releases on labels such as Nordic Voyage, Ready Mix Records, Personal Belongings and DeepClass Records.

This mix is one you can rinse and repeat time and again, perfect for getting out there this weekend. Enjoy. X

Outdoor Tapes E05 | Tidy Daps

To deliver our sixth instalment of the series we have the wonderful nongfaye (@nongfaye).

We've been bestowed a truly eclectic range of genres so far and nongfaye adds a further dimension with an immersive journey through nostalgic trip-hop and downtempo electronic. From the first few minutes of this recording we knew we were on to a winner, and so we're absolutely thrilled to have nongfaye join the OT collective.

Based in East London, nongfaye has been an avid collector for many years and started her DJ career only a few years ago. These days, she can be found spinning records on the last Friday of every month at the Shoreditch Wine House (@shoreditchwinehouse).

Alongside Mooreo (@elmooreo) she is also the co-creator and resident of ‘Ice Cream’, a bi-annual party at @RollingStock in East London where you can expect friendly house party vibes in an intimate setting and a top tier sound system.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

One of my biggest music influences comes from a Saturday job I had as a teenager in a streetwear and skateboard shop called Hoax in Ipswich. It was in the early 2000’s and I was introduced to trip-hop and downtempo electronic music and have loved those styles ever since.  Genres of music perfect for the outdoors. 

I wanted to create something atmospheric that takes you on a journey and I imagine marching through a forest or reaching the peak on a mountain hike, but also to be enjoyed sat round a campfire in the wilderness with friends.  

The Outdoor Tapes mix has enabled me to delve into my old CD collection, mixed with some of my favourite recent finds.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

Dreamachine (IG: @drea_m_achine) - it’s a multi-disciplined, immersive art experience that explores the power of our minds. It has the most amazing 3D sound production by Jon Hopkins and is an incredible project.

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO PLUG (AND DOESN'T FEATURE IN THE MIX)?

My recent favourite finds are in the mix, Cabaret Nocturne, Japanese Limo Boys (featured twice!) and Que Sakamoto - saw him play in a club in Buenos Aries by chance and he’s a really interesting DJ and producer.

Outdoor Tapes E06 | nongfaye

With yesterday marking the start of meteorological summer in the UK and the onset of festival season, we're celebrating with pressing play on another humdinger of an Outdoor Tape.

After a youth spent in the clutches of guitar bands and rappers, for @frankdaly a first snatched hearing of a DnB tape pack in a friend's beat up car in the late 90s followed by university in Bristol during peak Roni Size, Die, Krust era was enough to cement a lifelong love of dance music, DJing and latterly production.

20 years later he says his tastes have mellowed and widened and the BPMs generally slowed down but, in pretty much all forms, electronic music remains an obsession for him.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

This felt like a good opportunity to include some of my favourite more melancholy techno tunes that work great on headphones but, to be honest, require a near perfect set of circumstances if you wanted to play them out. The techno I love these days mainly dates from about 5-10 years ago and is what used to be called melodic before the whole massively overblown Anyma thing happened. For those who make it through an admittedly fairly eerie first 20 minutes, it does get a bit more house-y and lively though, culminating in one of the most ludicrously perfect tunes I've heard in years.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

Falling asleep on the Sleepless Floor at Melt Festival, playing a set at Burning Man, rewinding "Everyday" by Shy FX three times at a warehouse party and it being cheered to the rafters each time.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's soundtrack to Challengers mixed by Boys Noize is excellent.

Outdoor Tapes E07 | Frank Daly

From Fort Lauderdale, Florida comes our next guest DJ and producer, @Yeshayahumsc. A transcendent blend of Melodic and Afro House grooves, this mix will pair very well with an evening terrace or beach club and sundowners.

For well over 10 years, YeshaYahu has mixed countless eclectic DJ mixes and has played at some of the finest clubs in South Florida including SAAM at the SLS in Miami and Do Not Sit On The Furniture in South Beach. 

He also hosts his own podcast on iStreem radio called “The Sabea Podcast” (@the-sabea-podcast-istreem).  He hosts many new and upcoming artists of multiple disciplines within the electronic music scene and interviews them on Instagram currently.  

Now focusing on Afro house and 3-step selections, he is coming into a new form and revitalizing his brand.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

The inspiration for this mix came from years of trial and error as I come to discover my sound. Both in my craft and in my personal life. It serves as a metaphor for my life. In 2019 I have come to love Afro House and its many different variations. It has allowed me to connect to my heritage in a very positive way and with others.

Selecting tracks for this mix comes from me living close to a beach town here in South Florida. So a lot of the tracks I selected, especially in the beginning, are inspired by walking on the beach at sunrise and then towards the end of the mix arriving to a sunset beach party. Beachtown life in miniature I would say. 

I carefully selected some of the vocal tracks because a lot of those words speak to where I’m at currently in life. Especially “Only You” by AVÖ at the end of the mix. It’s a perfect way to end the story I tell.  It is dedicated to those that I love in my life and to where I live as well. 

Also I wanted to introduce one of the newest variations in the Afro House genre known as “3-step.” it’s a variation of Afro Tech, Amapiano, and Afro House put into one track. So in the beginning of this mix you will hear that as well.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

So over the years there are only have been a handful of places that I really liked going to and really there was only one place that really stood out to me where I played.

When Treehouse was open I had the opportunity to open up the main room in 2021. It was significant for me because that was the first major club that I actually opened the main room for and I was opening for an Anjunadeep artist named David Hohme. At that time he really inspired me to play the way that I do now. I would argue to say that my style is a hybrid of Melodic and Afro House, but he really gets the credit for inspiring me. 

Treehouse really provided what I would call a family setting because at that time many of my colleagues in the industry would go there to congregate to support one another and listen to our favorite artists together. 

One of the parties that really sticks out to me currently is Whispers. It’s a local Afro and Melodic House party hosted bi-monthly and is hosted in various locations around Miami. It’s pretty cool because there you can see some of the new and upcoming talent in the Afro House scene play and it’s such amazing vibe. It’s inspired by Tulum and partying there.

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO PLUG (AND DOESN'T FEATURE IN THE MIX)?

I currently love listening to ambient music and 3-Step. It’s actually a return to form for me in some way because I used to play a lot of ambient intros in my mixes way back in 2017 when I first started DJing. 

As I play more shows I want to really incorporate the 3-Step style of Afro House. I really really think people would like that variation and fresh take on the genre publicly.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

This mix was a real pleasure to put together. I love the DJ career I have, but its a funny thing - I rarely if ever get to play the sort of stuff I listen to at home in a DJ set. With this mix, I was able to dig through a corner of my collection that I hold dear, and which to me really evokes the glorious beauty of the outdoors. In particular I wanted to try and capture the magical, almost euphoric, feeling of a sunrise, and the feeling of the undulations of a trek to the top of a peak. There’s a slow pace to my mixing in this mix that is quite different to how I generally play in a club/festival setting, where its a lot faster between songs. I wanted to really let the music reveal itself slowly -  the same way as the day does, as the landscape does, and let the mood of the mix change with that. 

The perfect setting to listen?  I would never be so bold as to say that - its for the listener now, it’ll mean something different to every pair of ears that hears it, and that right there is the beauty of art. 

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

There’s a few - DJing New Year’s Eve at the top of the Shard for several years in a row was amazing. The view at midnight as the city erupts with firework, as far as the eye can see, in every direction, from a 70 storey vantage point… Its like Blade Runner on steroids!

I love a festival - my first Secret Garden Party I played an 11 hour set in the 24 hour bar, from about midnight until nearly midday, I made a lot of friends that night! And the sets I did for Monkey Shoulder there, especially the closing night parties, were always insane! 
One really fun one was in Nairobi, where the club was literally built into this giant tree! And playing at Volar in Hong Kong was amazing - Lone showed up at the end of my set, we went to see Seth Troxler playing round the corner and he played one of my favourite Depeche Mode tracks and I nearly died of happiness!

I’ve got really into Genius Of Time recently, and everyone needs to be listening to Murkage Dave, dude is a genius.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

I wanted to focus on the idea of discovery; nothing is more magical than finding a forest clearing or hiking to the top of a hill and enjoying a wonderful view. It’s in these moments, when nature reveals its hidden beauty, that we feel the joy of exploration and a sense of connection with the world around us.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

A few experiences really stand out. One would be Elsewhere in NYC the energy of the crowd was just electric and the sound system was incredible, it felt like a shared journey between the audience and me.

We're back with another monthly mixtape, this time courtesy of London-based DJ and multi-talented man @GentlemanGeorge.

Gentleman George started DJing at a teenage disco near Northampton. Since then he’s played in venues from Thailand to Taunton. Refusing to be pigeon-holed by genre he’s made folk dance at Glastonbury, Wilderness, Secret Garden Party and countless parties around the world.

This is a joy of a mix with a decidedly African feel to it and some serious throwbacks brought in with impeccable transitions. Our thanks to George for guesting and we hope you enjoy this month's OT.

Q: LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX FOR OUTDOOR TAPES. HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE TRACK SELECTION AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE PERFECT SETTING FOR THIS MIX?

I’ve been lucky to spend quite a bit of time in Africa and have always been drawn to the music that comes out of that amazing continent. My closing track of this mix I heard via the in-flight entertainment system on the way back from my first visit from there and since then I’ve been hooked by the melting pot of funk, soul, disco, house and other sounds which are so unmistakably African.

I defy anyone to listen to “The Real Deal” by Goldfish and not feel totally beguiled. With this mix I really wanted to explore those sounds from forgotten classics like Township Funk to disco gems like Roberta Kelly to newer producers like Nitefreak, Manyelo Dafro and Opolopo.
	
I rather envisaged this mix maybe for classic African sundowners or a late night walk or drive skirting through small African villages. Its got moments of beauty and euphoria but hopefully some nods to African clubbing culture with some darker house and breaks.

Q: IN YOUR YEARS OF DJING AND EVENTS, WHICH PLACES AND EXPERIENCES REALLY STAND OUT FOR YOU?

Playing Glastonbury this year for the first time was very special and also surreal. That place just has the most amazing energy and unadulterated joy which is pretty hard to beat.

Beyond that it’s always just the people who make DJing the most fun. I did an amazing party in an old aircraft hanger down in Dorset just after lockdown ended which went on till 7am and was so special having everyone finally able to dance together again.

I also played before George Fitzgerald a few weeks back who is the loveliest man ever.

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO PLUG (AND DOESN'T FEATURE IN THE MIX)?

At the moment I’ve been listening to a lot of Prins Thomas, Opolopo, Nathan Micay, Jordan Nocturne and I have to really plug @BenGomori who deserves to be absolutely huge.

As One Radio's Unessential Mix With Ollie

First mix from me this year. I hope you enjoy. I had originally anticipated producing a two-part mix with this mix being the second ‘La Selva - By Night’ side and a lighter daytime session mix being a ‘La Selva - By Day’ first instalment, but I ended up getting cold feet over some of the lighter selections and so I’m afraid it’s the deeper selection only. Perhaps once the sun and warmth return later this year I will feel inspired to record ‘By Day’ 😊.

This will probably be my last recorded set on the trusty Serato DDJ-SD3 as I want to treat myself to the next step up in kit and I think that’s looking like a switch to Traktor and the S4 MK3 having played alongside some friends last year who owned the latter which made me very jealous. Next mix to follow once I’ve relearnt to DJ with the new tools…until then, peace. X

Founder and host, Ollie B, tells us about his project:

"Music and outdoor adventure have been huge passions of mine for so many years. My habitual activity is long distance trail running, and when training or deep in a multi-stage ultra marathon, the euphoric feeling which can come about when plugged into a mix and moving quickly through the trails is unbeatable. 

In Outdoor Tapes, I wanted to bottle that feeling in one place with guest contributors also sharing the music which really uplifts them when outdoors. Each mix is intentionally personal with no guidelines or criteria set as to selection or length. In doing so, the ambition is that over time the mixtape series becomes a broad church of influences, genres and selections for listeners to explore."
