The mix has ended up clocking in at 2 hours and 10 minutes with 27 tracks. To be honest I originally probably had about 40 records I wanted to share once I sat down and thought about what has inspired me. I've had the great pleasure of rediscovering what some of these records mean to me and how they’ve shaped certain musical interests...

Some key points in the mix:

Track 1. Twin Peaks Theme - The beloved composer of the greatest TV show soundtrack Angelo Badalmenti recently passed away, I rewatch the weird & wonderful TV series every year and really love having movie/tv soundtracks in my collection.

Track 2 & 3. Madlib's Shade of Blue (Madlib Invades Blue Note Records) Is having a 20th anniversary this year. The track Montara is what I selected from the double LP, it has a running clarinet sample from the original by jazz legend Bobby Hutcherson. Track 3 in the mix Four Tet has used this exact sample and pitched it up when collaborating with Madib & MF DOOM  aka MADVILLIAN. This blend of the two tracks if for all the hip-hop heads...

Track 10. Gwen Gutherie - Hopscotch (Larry Levan Padlock Special Mixes) This LP is all mixed by the one & only Larry Levan.... Nothing over 115 bpm... Absolute gem!

Track 19. The Coach House Rhythm Section - Time Warp.   This is one of my favourite 12' singles I own and gets played every time when I dj..... From 1977 by the great Eddy Grant, it's groundbreaking... literally a time warp into the future!

Track 20 & 21.  Another favourite blend in the mix is by Gino Soccio's - There's A Woman into Kebekeletrik - Magic Fly.....  Gino Soccio is the Canadian Disco Record Producer and was behind the four-track EP Kebekelectik "an orgy of analog squirts and electronic flourishes that Soccio wrote and recorded on the spot, warts and all."
The four-song LP Kebekelektrik was remixed by legendary Tom Mouton and released in the U.S. on Salsoul in 1978.

Track 22. Frankie Knuckles - Waiting On My Angel. One the greatest releases on the infamous Chicago red label..... TRAX RECORDS.

Closing Track. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain. George Clinton's psychedelic masterpiece truly takes you on a journey every time...

Artistry of Fusion Ep.1: Nicholas Ching

I like to think of this mix as a sonic journey that is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of music. There are moments of horizontal movement, however generally the power, energy and details in the mix are in a state of flux, guided by a subtle rise in BPM and overall power. I tried to make this mix blend the depths of the deep underground with the magnetic allure of the mainstream. Sifting through some stripped back house and delving through both deep and playful strains of Romanian minimal. 

Things start with a bit more of a house nature, however Romanian minimal is the focal point of this musical voyage. For people this sound is news to, it is like minimal techno delicately crafted with soft, velvety hands. It presents a paradoxical simplicity that holds hidden layers of complexity, inviting listeners to explore new realms of consciousness. Subtle and ethereal, the music is adorned with delicate effects that gracefully dance over raw, organic and electronic drums and minimalist basslines. It's an experience that transcends the mere act of listening, allowing you to delve into the depths of introspection. Within this sonic tapestry, you'll discover the mesmerizing works of esteemed artists like Dragutesku, Traumer, Silat Beksi, and Crihan. 

As the mix unfolds, there are a couple notable Romanian pop edits by “Unknown Artist” (Dragutesku) on the DRG series label, which effortlessly merge the realms of the underground and the mainstream. These edits somewhat serve as a sonic bridge, creating a seamless flow that tickles your sense of nostalgia. They intertwine nicely with the mix, creating an energy that amplifies the impact of the moments around them.

Artistry of Fusion Ep.2: Summers

24 of my favourite records wrapped up into an hour and 45. These tracks never fail in getting me up into a much better mood and I hope they affect you in the same way.

Track #9 & Track #10. Heater(Vonstroke mix) by Samim & Finally by Kings Of Tomorrow Feat. Julie McKnight: Heater absolutely compliments any classic house track you decide to play side by side with, transforming this blend into a dance floor heater itself. I decided to play it with Finally by Kings Of Tomorrow because it's one of my very first records and I always get a great reaction from it.

Track #16 . Gotta let you go - Dominca (1994):
This track has completely stuck with me since the very beginning of my house/dance music journey and is my favourite record in my collection. I first heard it at a Billy Kenny set one night back when I was 19 and has latched to me since, the track has well and truly stood strong through its lifetime and will continue to do so.

Track #21. U don't know me - Armand Van Helden:
2Future4U released in 1999 by my favourite producer/DJ Armand. This was my very first record purchase for myself a 4xLP, its just insane. Check it out.

We continue to ride the spring wave with Episode 4, featuring the musical polymath, Mattymadeit. From sax prodigy to accomplished  producer, Matty's 10+ years in the game are palpable, seamlessly navigating through hip-hop, funk, disco, house, and garage. As a prominent figure in the QLD arts scene, Matty's deep connection to music and rich musical background shine through this mix. He eschews any explicit pointers to key moments, allowing the mix to speak for itself and trace his musical evolution.

Artistry of Fusion Ep.5: Uecalypt

This mix is a collection of my favourite artists that inspire me musically, and a showcase of the original roots of House music, stemming from Chicago and Detriot warehouses in the 80's. House music is Black music. My roots from Durban, South Africa and my musical influence from my father has led me to develop a keen ear for the US house music you will predominately hear in this mix.

This mix is a discovery of the soul, telling a story, starting with worldy dub floating into lush jazz and smooth grooves of deep house. As the mix progresses, flavours from my recent trip to Europe and my record store finds have snuck their way into this mix.

[Track 3 + 12] Rick Wade is a maestro of his craft - his music invokes a sense of belonging and peace for me; he has been able to translate how I feel in my soul into music. From the depths of deep house and pure house, his music brings the feelings of so much joy. The sounds of Detriot.

[Track 5] Delano Smith, one of the godfathers of Detroit in my eyes, has influenced my musical journey to the point his tracks are in nearly every mix I have ever made. Currently battling with cancer, his legacy will live on for generations to come.

[Track 6] Fred P - there isn't too much I can say about Fred - you can hear it in his music.... everyone wants to be as deep as Fred.

[Track 10] This Chez Damier record was originally released in 1993, and it was a huge mid 90's house jam that was played week in week out at the Sound Factory in New York.

[Track 13] This Javonntte track is one of my all time favourite records in my collection.

This is no better feeling than pulling out a vinyl record and knowing you travelled to the record store, spent hours digging, transported the record home and being about to drop the needle on a piece of wax that contains so much soul. Playing records is deeply embedded in house music culture; having a physical connection to the music is so important to me and allows me to feel something that can't be reproduced.

Track 1:
NYC 80s No wave, Dance punk legends. Best known for their track ‘Cavern’ which was sampled by Grandmaster Flash on ‘White Lines’. ‘Scraper’; percussion grooves and smattering bass, congas, marimba and the occasional vocals, killer track!

Track 2:
1979 Bristol Band, ‘Maximum Joy’, probably one of my favourite dance punk projects to come out of the UK.
Super groovy baselines and percussion plus the sax on this track is sick!

Track 5:
South Bronx Dance punk band, ESG! Such a funky and lively style, one of my all time favourites.
They were a massive influence on dance music in general, essential!.

Track 6:
New York proto house bomb on ‘Easy Street’. Baseline on this track is nuts not to mention how catchy the chorus is.

Track 11:
Italo disco club hit by ‘Peter Richard’ (Walter Benait), almost always makes it into a live set of mine, new wave walking through space kinda sound that has its own atmosphere, super solid track.

Track 12:
Pioneering 1980’s New Zealand electronic pop band ‘Car Crash Set’. Awesome drum machine rhythm and an infectious melody can’t go wrong here.

Track 19:
One of my biggest DJ influences, MCDE. Danillow’s most recent release, remix of jazz trumpeter Hermon Mehari’s, Tenfaqit’ a deep house journey that concludes the mix very well.

8. I'm Doing Fine // Amp Dog Knight's - Amp Fiddler with production credits from Kenny Dixon Jnr (2002). Amp Fiddler left us in Dec of 23 after producing an incredible legacy. Played with P-Funk, Taught J-Dila to use an MPC, and left a huge mark on Detroit and music.

Episode 11 calls upon another Brisbane-based legend, and mentor to many, Jimmy Ellis.

The Meanjin mainstay presents us with a 2-hour mix showcasing a condensed evening of dancing reminiscent of nights like Music We Love at Black Bear Lodge. The idea was to create something with a slow take-off, hit peak, then finish with a nice landing. It's a journey meant to be felt, not described. This one's an ears-only affair.

Artistry of Fusion Ep.11: Jimmy Ellis

A Journey through Jazz.

The set explores everything from downtempo ,trip-hop, lounge, disco, soul, afro, house, minimal-tech to experimental. It still retains coherency through jazz grooves and the sounds I am chasing across the set. My heart lies in jazz and I love playing across different genres.

I picked some of my favourites that will get you dancing at any tempo. I am also an advocate for playing classically a “lounge music” at night clubs among house and techno music, hope this may inspire you. 


Track 2. Walk with Us - Amanda Whiting & Don Leisure 

A heavenly collaboration between the jazz harp goddess Amanda Whiting and the UK producer Don Leisure. One of my favourite tracks at the moment, dreamy and mysterious atmosphere, suitable for late hours as well. 

Track 3. Just Relax Yourself -  Freedom Satellite & Raimund Flöck

Vienna Scientists is one of my favourite labels from Austria. This track is Leftfied, dubby & trip-hoppy. I listened to a lot of trip-hop/acid jazz in my youth. Love mixing this kind of dark-dub vibes to counterbalance the sweet jazz grooves. Definitely the rabbit hole you wanna get lost into. 

Tracks 4 & 5. Confusão  - Vibes4YourSoul ; I Betacha! - Dave Mathmos

I have a few records from the Too Slow To Disco label. They do really groovy downtempo souls and disco music. I picked a samba tune that I mix a lot in my sets, a track with groovy vibes brought from the local Australian producer Dave Mathmos.

Track 6. Are you Satisfied - The Rah Band

I love The Rah Band! Soulful, Jazzy but has that iconic 80s synth-pop vibes. Also they are a master of storytelling, producing emotionally provoking songs. 

Track 8 & 20. Pour Faire le Portrait d’un Oiseaux- Stéphane Pompougnac ; No Communication, No Love - Charles Shillings

I have a few collections of Hotel Costes series mixed by Stephane Pompougnac. Classy & Jazzy curation but also under-played in the dance context, and I love to mix some tracks here and there in the club context as well.

Track 12. Bottera Rejam - Delfonic & Kapote 

Delfonic and Kapote’s Illegal Jazz productions are insanely good. They do a lot of reworks on 70s vintage jazz fused with contemporary beats. Just can’t get enough of them!

Track 14. Fuck Yeah - Leon Phal

This track by Leon Phal is an example that dance music doesn’t need to be produced electronically. This up-tempo jazz groove fits right in among EDMs in my opinion. 

Track 16. Everything is Changing (Swag Remix) - Groove Collective

One of my favourite house labels from the 90s is the Naked Music Recordings, super jazzy & funky but also has a dreamy liquid touch. I have a few records from them and this track is really groovy and guarantees you to get moving

Track 19. Milano Bossa - Aqua Bassino 

When I first heard this track I thought this is exactly what I am looking for. A perfect combo of Chuggy house beats, a sexy bass line, and a groovy jazz melody, but not too sweet. Aqua Bassino hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland. 

Track 23. Son of Dragon - Liquid People

Early 2000s goody. A beautiful liquid melancholic melody line on repeat that you can’t get enough of. Play this a lot in the late hours. 

Track 25. Rua Do Trombeta - Madrid De Los Austrias  

I really love Madrid De Los Austrias, from Austria with a Spanish Flair. Their tracks often have really beautiful jazz lines with a hint of darkness, offering a variety of tracks spanning from trip-hop, disco-groove to tech-house, worth exploring. I like bringing an edge to my set by mixing their music. This track has a lot of rich sounds and harmony, and goes well with up-tempo liquid EDMs too.  

Track 28. New Beginning - Byron The Aquarius (feat. Rasheeda Ali)

Byron The Aquarius brings a perfect fusion of soulful house meets jazz. The track is already so captivating from the beginning with beautiful soft keyboard opening, featuring gorgeous flute player Rasheeda Ali. So many layers of sounds and a pure joy to listen to.

Artistry of Fusion Ep.13: Artefacts

Words from Eric: This mix was inspired from a recent trip to Seoul where I could envision it coming together as I dug out an abundance of music in some record stores there. The mix is a dynamic journey woven with various dance music, not bound by style or tempo. There’s other classics I’ve plucked out where I’d thought they’d lot right in too. The recording was made on 2 x Technics SL1200 MKII’s, a Condesa Carmen Rotary Mixer and a Boss DD-200 Digital Delay pedal.

Artistry of Fusion Ep.14: Eric Roy

Words from Hunter: Doing this mix has helped me to connect a few dots and realise why Im digging things that I originally thought I wouldn’t be into. I haven't been collecting or mixing for long but in that time my taste has evolved a lot. Going back through my first purchases has made me realise how so many of the rabbit holes I've been down have stemmed from recommendations from record shop owners or DJs i rate.

I wanted to showcase a bit of the journey I've been on in terms of early influences, a few of the different genres that continue to inspire me and some of the different sounds i tend to gravitate towards.

*Tracks 1 and 2 are the intros to my favourite albums growing up. What set Bad brains and Tribe apart from others in my opinion was their positive attitude.

*Track 4 One of my new favourite producers from Naarm. Joe at Echo and Bounce recommended it to me and I fell involve with it on the first listen. Super dark stuff.

*Track 9 This is the first record I ever bought at something else in Eora. I picked up a few randomly out of the shelves that I liked the look of because I didn’t know any artists or labels, didn’t know how to use a turntable and didn’t know how to explain the music I was into. Luckily it turned out to be what I was after. Shout out to Dave for the good recommendations the few times I have been back since.

*Track 10, 11, 12 and 13 I wanted to explore one of my favourite genres and how different pockets of dub play off each other. Starting with a more classic sounding dub remix from the Aussie duo Echo Inspectors, before moving to a bouncy one from Ludowick on spclnch label. This works nicely with the club friendly mix of big bark from kiwi lord Eden Burns and the harder UKG inspired tune from Krotone. I love seeing how a sound can span over many genres. Without me knowing, my love for the dub sound actually started with Bad Brains - Jah Calling.

*Track 15 Picked this one up while I was at Filter Musik in Norway. Quality deep house from local lord Fredfades

*Track 19 Ste Roberts is probably my biggest influence, his sound is exactly what I’m into. He was nice enough to send me a test pressing from his new label when I ordered one of his STE records. This track is called Early Riser by Helmet. It’s one of his early influences from fabric 01 by Craig Richards. It’s always interesting to see who inspired the people who inspire you and how they channel that into their own unique sound.

*Track 23 Picked this one up at Monster Robot Party in Meanjin. Proper 90s Techno that led me on a bit of a discovery trail.
