Outlook 2021-09-20 - Sexual Misconduct & Emotional Abuse in the Blindness Community

Taking a bit of a break at the end of one year and the beginning of the next, but we have some bonus materials we hadn’t planned on airing, but it was too good speaking with author Dr. M. Leona Godin again and we had to share.

On Outlook this week and last, we’re replaying a Zoom interview co-host Kerry did with Dr. Godin about her June 1st, 2021 release of her cultural history, an exploration of blindness throughout the last few centuries, up to modern times. It’s about what sighted people think about blindness, in the tellings in literature and in cultural and historical examinations or lack-there-of and what blind people say when given a voice.

We spoke a lot about her book, There Plant Eyes: A Personal and Cultural History of Blindness throughout the second half of 2021 and we’re ending the year and beginning the next with it again here and now.

Kerry was preparing an interview for online print literary journal The Rumpus and planned to use the Zoom recording for her notes when writing it up. It turned out, the casual yet informative discussion, taking place on June 24th, 2021, would be an audio basis for the print piece.

Outlook 2022-01-03 - There Plant Eyes, A Bonus Interview With M. Leona Godin, Pt. 2

Naarm/Melbourne 4-piece screensaver is back with a double A-side 7-inch single just 6-months after delivering their 10-track debut album Expressions of Interest on Upset the Rhythm to positive international response. See praise for the record on Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll, KEXP, and Post Trash. The album has also been a regular feature on Henry Rollin’s KCRW Santa Monica radio show.

The band return with two distinctly different tracks that extend upon the blend of post-punk, new wave and synth-punk on their debut. Side A, Clean Current is a burst of high-energy: nervy guitars and groovy base underpinned with krautrock drums and cosmic synth noise, overlayed with delay heavy vocals. Repeats is the flipside of the coin, a moody post-punk stomper, led by gritty saw tooth synth, chorus-soaked guitar, textural percussion and soaring vocals. Lyrically Clean Current spits out retorts aimed at the engulfing nature of anxiety whilst Repeats critiques the repetition of modern life, languishing human existence.
Clean Current nods it’s head to likes of Snapper and 80s Flying Nun bands whilst Repeats owes it origins more to the progenitors of goth-rock.

Singer/song writer and author Heather Hutchison now, will think of herself during the toughest moments of these last few years, as if it were another girl entirely:

“She’s been so mean to herself for so long. And if we talked to our friends the way we talk to ourselves, we wouldn’t have any.”

It’s been six months since we spoke with Hutchison about her memoir, released a year ago: Holding On by Letting Go.

Since then, the January 28 release of her new EP, If I Could came out, a sort of companion to the book, a soundtrack to the memoir and her experiences in a psychiatric hospital during Covid.

During Heather’s second time appearing on Outlook, we discuss her presence on TikTok since the release of her book, on the creation of If I Could and its four songs (+ one radio edit), and the great need for more self compassion for us all.

At one time, Heather thought she was done making music, but after everything she would go on to write about in Holding On by Letting Go, she would again one day find herself sitting down at the piano. Join us this week with Hutchison as she performs two of the songs found on this EP live from her piano and her Vancouver Island home studio, live into the Radio Western studios.

Blind people, well all people to a certain extent, but specifically blind people are either constantly told we cant do things. Or else we’re told we can be/do anything we want. This week on Outlook we relate over this position, and over the barriers that feel hard to surmount without support.

It’s that time of year again when snow’s making an appearance, but we’re glad to be speaking with our guest for this one, talking the reality of vulnerability.

This week on Outlook we speak with Mitch Creedy about growing up in South Africa and what they noticed after coming to Canada, about anxiety and vulnerability, and they share about their intersecting blindness and coming out as transgender and non binary, how they feel about learning to advocate in the healthcare system during their recent gender affirming surgery..

We touch on a plethora of other topics too, from forest bathing to kitchen gadgets.
