This five-track mini-album is a lockdown baby that fed on the quietness of a country on pause only to result in a labyrinthine of sonic life. Here, the techno and house duo's creation is a concoction of simmering and deeply rolling sounds resulting in a downright blazing dancefloor blitz.

For Beat & Path, A Figure of Speech summons the first of what will be a series of electronic mini albums that aim to capture a slice of where each label artist is creatively.

To dig crates in 2023 is to explore an electronic ecosystem beyond taxonomising; there are now more tracks on Beatport than there are people in Hong Kong, and (as in nature) specialisation is the key to a producer's success. Brothers Hayden and Barton Strom (Out of Sorts) understand this, having perfected a brawny but restrained style of house across their post-Antix career. Their latest release with T-Bone for Beat and Path presents the essentials of this sound with time-won self-assurance. 'The Key' centres around a confident vocal line from T-Bone, a Kiwi producer and vocalist who brings a blues influence to this extraplanetary expedition. With twenty-seven years in the underground electronic scene, Out of Sorts have the dexterity to try unconventional approaches; here they've begun with acoustic stems recorded by T-Bone on an Akai multitrack, manipulating them into a spacey early-morning house piece. The result is as much a song as it is a track, an exquisite electronic sculpture covered in acoustic fingerprints, and will appeal to lovers of Innervisions and the ecstatic gravity of the South African deep house sound. The B-side is from Jamie Stevens, a man whose release schedule is absolutely sprawling this year (with releases on Balance, Bedrock and Selador in March alone). His mature, restrained signature is immediately audible on this seven-minute remix, which is too certain in its source material to bother with dramatic builds and drops. A few meticulously chosen elements and an irresistible groove; good dance music requires nothing more.

Dispensing with foreplay, track one ("Like a Myth") jumps straight into a bouncing, jet-black groove, with snappy claps puncturing a serrated mid-bassline. T-Bone (Tony Bartlett)'s vocals interweave the whole thing, processed to sound as if they're getting beamed in from an interplanetary radio station. It's a fearsome, stomping follow-up to the trio's more ethereal release from earlier this year, and not to be played to family members with the slightest fear of pagan rituals.

In a serendipitous turn of events, three DJs found themselves entwined in the vibrant tapestry of electronic music, culminating in a collaborative EP set to enrapture audiences worldwide. The trio, comprising Goetzlich(Switchbox), Pim(SQL), and (Marcelo)Dreamawaken, embarked on a musical odyssey that began over a decade ago in the heart of Cologne. Despite their initial connection in 2010, it wasn't until 2023 that destiny intervened once more, catalysing a reunion that would redefine their musical trajectory. Goetzlich and Pim found themselves sharing the stage at the esteemed Evolution Festival in southern Germany, igniting a dormant spark of collaboration. Bon Iver (pronounced Bone-ee-VARE) has always resonated with me as a musician for his song writing and lyrical genius that hits the spot every time. From the first time I heard Bon Iver he became my go to when in need for music to contemplate, relax and chill out to. It is perfect morning music in my opinion, in fact the ultimate morning music to ease oneself into the day.
I compare our music to that of Bon Iver with its similarities and obscure, non formal chords and key progressions.
I hope you enjoy this edit as much as I have enjoyed producing it and that will take you to another place as it has for me.

Out of Sorts bring the heat with an original titled ‘Ullus’ This is aptly named after a notorious powerful surf break in Bali. As its namesake suggests the tune slowly builds to a percussive workout the crashes to the breakdown, and that's where the surge kicks in!. A huge distorted bass stab echoes when the tune drops, and keeps cycling around to remind you that this wave is one to remember! Without a doubt, one of the strongest Out of Sorts cuts to date.

On remix duties, we have Niconé who flips this monster into a sublime roller. Giving a jacking rhythm and space to loose yourself in. The groove pulsates and the sub frequencies are hypnotic, with a subtle relentless acid line that follows to keep you locked.

It's easy to assume that Out Of Sorts came Out Of Knowhere when their first remix made its way into the hands of Kompakt Records gaining attention of some of the biggest players in the game. But there's something about their productions that tells you they didn't – something bold lurks within those modern grooves and nostalgic moods telling us that we're not dealing with lucky amateurs.

Because we're not. In fact, Out Of Sorts is the mysterious new identity fronting a duo who have seen huge international success under a different moniker. And with this new name comes a new sound that's difficult to pigeonhole, leaving the past almost irrelevant – except that this is a duo who know how to bring it.

Which they are. From the grimiest clubs to the most revered festivals on the global circuit, somewhere in the abyss of electronica you'll hear the Out Of Sorts sound.
