@adab arrived at a love of electronic music on the dance floor of queer-run techno party In Training in their native Cleveland. Before long, they went on to established themselves as a DJ who plays electric sets of house, techno and club beats as part of a constant quest to "seek the unifying elements in the world and themselves." The Pittsburgh resident and radio regular is now half of Cleveland party Heaven is in You and has an international profile that is only set to grow as they continue to confound expectations with each new set. 

That starts with this week's mix, which is an other-worldly trip into genre-less electronics. Dense and cinematic ambiance and sound design set the opening scene - it's a world of searching synths and shadowy alien life forms in which a skeletal rhythm eventually appears. Deconstructed dub, club and jungle flavour the ensuing grooves which are heads down and dark. They evoke all manner of dystopian futures and make for a brilliantly unconventional ride.

A. easily distracted, busy bee, passionate, nomadic, pensive.. :)

Q. What was your last memorable club night in NYC?
A. nowadays nonstop in may was epic.. that room is honestly the dream in the right context. the lighting and sound is so on point and the energy during my set time was so infectious (I played 3.30-6am before the legend PLO man). also special shout-out to groovy groovy which i played in july :) DIY parties are always extra special when done right

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. this is a very honest/ sombre personal diary I’ve been compiling all year. it’s almost for me the musical embodiment of an infinite plane ride.. watching the sun rise and then set and then rise again. also an ode to all the new & old people that were in my life this year.

this year brought lots of purgatory moments, lots of solo transit.. times of isolation and change, also new friends, positive growth, and people coming into my life… so I guess it’s supposed to represent the ups and downs, change and the journey,

I was struggling to finish the mix and it was sitting at 80% complete for the last little while but I feel like the current situation in Palestine </3 really inspired the missing pieces of the mix. for me, I use music and storytelling as an outlet for frustration and emotion generally. lots of old classics in this and pensive moments.. hope the listeners can feel some of that emotion through listening too..

The third offering in our mix series is a live recording of Priori and Cousin's dj set at Sustain Release 2024. Recorded on the last morning between 6am and 1pm on what was meant to be an ambient stage, it featured everything a 3 day festival closing set should. Eclectic picks, strange and emotional sounds, dubious transitions and a few feigned endings. Massive thanks to all the dancers, the Sustain staff (Aurora, Ash and everybody else who put their blood, sweat and tears into this), the music makers, the birds, the stars.

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.
