He was known only as Bonin and his skill and rhythmic precision with his art were said to be unmatched. And though his story would be told and retold for generations to come, no one ever knew where he had come from or how he had traveled through time.

All they knew was that the Bonin was a warrior without equal.

“This mix showcases forthcoming music from myself, UVB-76 and The Stone Tapes,” says Bournemouth based producer Jason Luxton aka Overlook. Luxton has released his stripped back, ominous productions via various European drum ’n’ bass and techno labels, but the majority of his output has been presented by the Bristol based UVB-76 imprint, founded by Gremlinz and producer trio Ruffhouse in 2015. Beyond the music of Overlook, the label-cum-collective’s back catalogue has a cohesive sound, described by Ruffhouse member Nick Callaghan as having a “thick atmosphere” and a “deepness”, which matches a strong and eerie visual identity.

The Stone Tapes is one of several UVB sub labels and is co-run by Luxton. Speaking to Louis Pattison in The Wire 424, he describes it as being concerned with sound as “audio apparitions”, inspired by ghost stories and building on the idea of fleetingness or space within a track, leaving room for uncanny apparitions of the imagination.

Overlook’s music pays homage to great Drum & Bass tradition while viewing the genre through a futurist lens. Now making significant inroads into Techno & Ambient music, Overlook makes no secret of his influences from the world of film and art, drawing heavily on the suspense, tension and restraint of the medium. A consummate producer and highly credible remixer Overlook isn’t bound by the numbing limitation of genre.
