’’A música do Oriente Médio sempre esteve presente na minha vida. Minha mãe, nascida em Aleppo, na Síria, colocava fitas K7 de música árabe quando eu era pequeno. Tive contato pela primeira vez com a música Etíope há uns 10 anos, quando um amigo colocou um CD gravado sem nome e sem capa para ouvir. Nesse momento, fiquei totalmente hipnotizado por essa música, com um dialeto semita
parecido com as músicas que minha mãe escutava. Era uma espécie de James Brown árabe cantando num andamento distinto com escalas misteriosas e poderosíssimos arranjos de metais.A partir desse dia, comecei a pesquisar e tentar descobrir de onde é que vinha esse tipo de música, até que um dia ouvi uma coletânea em vinil feita por um selo francês e ali estavam as respostas para minhas perguntas. Finalmente tinha encontrado a origem daquela música misteriosa. Vinha diretamente Etiópia!Após minha descoberta, nomes como Alèmayèhu Eshèté e Mulatu Astatkè passaram a fazer parte do meu set nos bailes de jazz, na época do Clube Berlin, na Barra-Funda, onde era residente. Mesmo não entendendo o que se fala na música, a forma como esses artistas cantam é muito expressiva. É essencial como repertório e bagagem cultural para o desenvolvimento da minha produção pessoal. Essa mix resume a minha pesquisa de músicas da Etiópia, um material bem específico selecionado especialmente em vinil para você viajar sem sair do lugar.’’

TPS 052 - A BRAZILIAN COSMOS - Selections by Aki (Cosmos Records)

Multi Culti are proud to present the debut EP from Sao Paolo's Voodoohop resident, Thomash.

DJ Thomash has set up one of the most influential nights in the bazooming Brazilian scene with his Voodoohop party, a fusion of tropical hedonism and avant-garde trance-inducing European electronic music, a lively mix that no doubt has its genesis in his transplanted German roots (he's from Cologne aka Kompakt-ville). He's shared the stage with guys like Rebolledo, Joakim, Acid Pauli and more, and now finally looks to colonize the world with his first release.

Interestingly, Thomash has a degree in artificial intelligence, so while it might just be our imagination, it does seem that the rhythms, full of oddly tuned percussion and colorful synth stabs seem imbued with a distinct internal logic, playful forms that bounce off each other in their own reality, according to their own laws. This narrative of the ethnoid, German-Brazilian AI ties in nicely with the title: Candomble is the name of an Afro-Brazilian religion, meaning literally 'dance in honour of the gods.' Fortunately for us, Thomash seems to be honouring some scarcely acknowledged, far-out deities... spritely DMT-elves. Ectoplasma further plays into this reading, both in title and in vibe, floating unconcerned with material dancefloor goals into a space of peaceful imagination and spirit. Finally, Calango Fumando Palha is a soft, dreamy morning peyote-fire anthem… a healing latin lullaby to soothe troubles and set positive vibes free.

Called in to take us deeper into the trip are Multi Culti's go-to sooth-sayers DREEMS, who lead us forwards in full-chakra-alignment with the originals, bringing bigger bass into the heart of the jungle, tripping on acid, leaving us loose-limbed, wide-eyed, and open-minded in bliss as the final chords tuck us in and kiss us goodnight. Jess Sah Bi & Peter One "Our Garden Needs Its Flowers" was a revelation to many folks outside West Africa when it was reissued worldwide a few years ago. However, the Country-Americana duo from Ivory Coast has been massive since they emerged in the mid-80s, playing stadiums and making a beloved home in peoples' ears across the region for decades. The enormous response from listeners and press around the globe speaks for itself.

Now we are making Jess Sah Bi's beautiful first solo album widely available for the first time. Recorded in South Carolina and released in Ivory Coast in 1991 only on cassette, Jesus-Christ Ne Deçoit Pas [Jesus Christ Never Gives Up] comes out April 18 in restored and remastered audio on digital and tape formats. It is the first in ATFA's new African Devotional Music series.

Jess Sah Bi narrowly survived a brush with death and promised himself and God that he would record an album in praise. While on an exchange visit to South Carolina he arranged to record some new songs and later released the album in Ivory Coast. At the time, locally-produced gospel music wasn't big yet—most of the well-known West African gospel artists hailed from Ghana and Nigeria. But with the success of Jesus-Christ Ne Deçoit Pas, Jess Sah Bi helped kick off a homegrown Ivorian gospel music movement that today thrives in many parts of the country and beyond.
