Opposites of Habit (13-EDO)

This piece was accepted to Electroacoustic Barn Dance 2018, and SEAMUS 2018.

I used 4 voices: 2 organ tracks, and 2 clavichord tracks. Both sounds have overtone spectra corresponding to a very ambiguous chord that I like using in this tuning (I end the piece on it: it can sound like a major chord, or a minor chord in first inversion, due to the ambiguity of the interval in 21 that sounds right between a major third and perfect fourth.) Other sounds of indeterminate pitch phase with the main four parts, creating association and subversion of melodic lines. 

Stretto and point-of-imitation are used extensively. I always use xenharmonic fifths, and the third-fourth, when available as the building blocks of the harmony. They are the most shocking to the Western ear, but they actually aid in smooth part-writing as well.

I use the following octatonic scale (with very little pitch material wandering outside of this):

This is directly inspired by the Lennon Claypool Delirium, as well as Sufjan Stevens. The four chords are moving between the four different chunks of 5-EDO, as the source material. "God's Number" is 20, hence the usage of 20-EDO with this subject.

God's Favorite Tuning (20 - EDO)

This piece was written for the flute players of Duo Zhonda, at Charlotte New Music Festival 2017. Music commonly thought of as lost and forgetful could have a variety of attributes. With an erratic nature, the music can be hasty, jumping from place to place in panic. With a monotonous nature, it can be pacing around in a circle wondering where it should go. In this piece, I purposely fade between the two ideas over the entire course of the piece, inversely with both rhythm and pitch. This piece is dedicated to my professor Jody Nagel, who often says, “Symmetry removes one’s ability to orient.” This short piece is an exploration of that idea, and inspired by that very phrase, as 36 is highly composite.
