CHAPTER II

B L A C K O U T. No sound, no light, it is total darkness on the dance floor, a complete power outage. I immediately tell myself it must be the breaker or generator. The technician appears and he start troubleshooting.

I grab my african shaker and play a little rhythm to keep people entertained. My loyal trooper friends in the DJ booth start humming a song to mask the silence.

Four, five, six minutes pass by, but it feels like an eternity. People from the crowd are slowly walking away but the people who were the most in the flow remain on the dance floor, optimistic that we will solve the problem. We conclude that the powerbar where all the DJ gear is connected is causing the breaker to shut down, with too much water leaking on it during the storm. We quickly find a replacement, unplug, replug, and turn it on again. SUCCESS! All the lights are shining and the gear is back online again. 

Decision time–  in what direction will I take this set now? Do I start where I left off, or should I build a new set? Over 10 minutes of dead silence, the energy from the previous set is completely lost. The people on the dancefloor are patiently waiting for the next chapter and I trust them immensely. 

They are troopers, music lovers, as they remained with me through the downpour. This trust allows me to take my time to rebuild a new foundation for the rest of the journey. I go into my “Intro & acoustic”  folder again and choose a record. Chapter II begins. 

I truly felt grateful for Mother Nature playing her part in this adventure by joining us on the dancefloor. I was overwhelmed with a sense of being alive and present, and I was so grateful & thankful to share this experience with these beautiful people.

Das Phantom der Oper

Vorab kurz zu meiner Person, mein Name ist Johann und ich habe meine besten Jahre defintiv hinter mir gelassen. Mein Haupt ziert schütteres graues Haar, mein Gesicht ist übersäht mit Falten und bräunlichen Altersflecken. Ich bin ein alter Mann, der sich diesen Umstand dennoch nur mächlich eingestehen will.
Mein Arbeitsplatz befindet sich in einem alten und sehr großen Gebäude, mit dicken Steinmauern und einem kontinuierlichen kühlen Luftzug, der sich seinen Weg durch verschlungen Gänge des baufälligen Bauwerks bahnt.
Laien nennen es ein Opernhaus, ich bezeichne es als lebensnotwendiges Übel. Seit dem ich ein Teenager bin arbeite ich hier. Durch ein Zeitungsinserat bin ich damals auf die Stelle aufmerksam geworden. Im jugendlichen Eifer bin ich dann auch umgehend vorstellig geworden, wurde genommen und bin nie mehr davon weg gekommen.
Meine Arbeit lässt sich wohl am ähesten mit dem eines Hausmeisters vergleichen, dies ist jedoch nur eine sehr grobe Beschreibung meiner Betätigung ich leiste viel, viel mehr als das ...
Es ist nicht meine Absicht Euch hier mit unwichtigen Details über meinen Beruf zu behelligen. Es sei nur soviel gesagt, von einer kaputten Glühbirne, über das nachbessern alter Holzbalken im Dachstuhl, bis zu den Aufräumarbeiten nach einer Vorstellung, all das war Teil meiner Tätigkeit in diesem Opernhaus.
Mein Leben änderte sich schlagartig, als ich an diesem einen, schicksalhaften Tag, die Falltür im Keller entdeckte. Relativ häufig musste ich in das verstaubte Gemäuer, um Requisiten, Werkzeug oder andere Gegenstände des täglichen Bedarfs herauf zu holen. Durch einen Zufall oder durch Gott gewollte Fügung entdeckte ich dann die eiserne Falltür, einen Eingang in die Katakomben unterhalb der Stadt. 
Ich verschob gerade einen alten Schrank um einen Kronleuchter zugreifen, da fiel mein Blick auf das verwitterte Tor zur Unterwelt. Trotz des permanenten Zeitdrucks in meinem Job hielt ich inne, um dass eben aufgefundene etwas genauer zu inspizieren. Auf dem Metall waren augenscheinlich sehr alte und mir unbekannte Schriftzeichen zu sehen. Für mich sahen sie aus wie die verschnörkelte Handschrift eines Grundschülers. Ich beließ es erst einmal dabei, nahm mir weswegen ich gekommen war und stieg über die alte Treppe wieder ins Erdgeschoss. 
In der selben Nacht kehrte ich mit einer Taschenlampe bewaffnet noch einmal zurück, um in Ruhe meinen Fund zu begutachten. 
Einem Impuls heraus folgend versuchte ich die metallene Tür aus ihrer erdenen Fassung zu heben und stellte erstaunt fest, dass dies um einiges leichter ging als erwartet. Mit einem für mich ungewöhnlich kraftvollen Satz, sprang ich durch die Öffnung in die Finsternis. Meine Füße traffen auf festen, dennoch leicht morastigen Boden. Ich schaute mich um, die Wände waren Schwarz und mit einem feuchten Glanz überzogen. Wasser tropfte auf den Boden, ich leuchtete in den Gang vor mir und erspähte gute 30 Meter weiter eine Abzweigung. Ohne großartig zu überlegen machte ich mich auf, dass unterirdische Geheimnis zu erkunden, zu verlieren hatte ich nichts. Schon nach den ersten paar Metern wurde mir klar, dass ich nicht zurück kommen würde. Was auch immer mich in diesen Schächten erwartete, interessanter als dort oben im Opernhaus, ist es mit Sicherheit...

Das Set von Pale Pinguin ist mit einem leicht melancholischen Touch versehen. Die geheimnisvolle und altertümliche Atmosphäre lässt einem keine andere Wahl, als andächtig der Musik zu lauschen.

We are almost at the end of the summer and after some amazing shows over the past few months I wanted to share a live set from one of my shows. This set was recorded in Sierre on the edge of the Lac de Géronde as part of the Week-end au bord de l'eau.

It has a mix of unreleased tracks, released tracks, edits but 100% owl-ish material.

Following on last month's theme. As patina is the surface expressing what's underneath, lustre is the energy that emanates outwards. The tracks in this mix have a warm, gentle but driving depth to them. There are some feelings in here that I associate to the sense of power held by aged wood, as both a strong material and a soft expression of life.
