Commentary:

Rob: "Until The Day Is Done" will always have a special place in my heart. You see, about this time, my love for REM was slightly waning. The year was 2007, and the last three albums—Up, Reveal, and Around The Sun—had seen REM's career take a direction I didn't particularly want to follow. So it was with some reluctance—and, to be fair, a large amount of trepidation—that I decided to check out some of the new songs leaked on Youtube from their much publicized live rehearsals. The first song I heard was "Living Well Is The Best Revenge" which was such a pleasant punch to the face that I could hardly contain my joy. However, I thought there was no way the rest of the album could be this good. Next I clicked on "Until The Day Is Done," and that is when, while cradling my newborn daughter who was only a few months old, I started to cry. Corny, I know—but I was just overcome with so much emotion: I was a new dad, and the band I loved was back. As for the vocal itself, this was another one of those songs where I very clearly in my head heard a complete harmony track (one I would often sing along to with Stipe while driving in my car).  I was overjoyed when Clive not only liked it, but went so far as to say that this cover now makes the REM vocal seem like it's missing something. I can only hope that some of you the feel the same way. Thanks as always.

 Clive: Though I was obviously very pleased that R.E.M. were cranking up the guitars and tempo with 2008's Accelerate there will always be a part of me that instantly warms to the quieter acoustic songs that R.E.M. write, and it turned out to be no coincidence that this song made me remember the first times I started listening to R.E.M. back in 1992 with Automatic For The People - apparently the guitar riff was first written around this time. 

My opinions of the song were luke-warm when I first listened to poor audio quality recordings of the Dublin rehearsals; it was when they chose to allow CNN to use it as the background music for their Planet In Peril trailer that I almost punched the air because "R.E.M. were back" and sounding as great as I ever remember them sounding.

 Speaking from a guitarist's point of view, the song is in double drop D tuning which is to my recollection the first time they've done this sort of thing since "Gardening At Night" - but please don't quote me on this! I hardly ever pick up the guitar without playing this at least once. It's such a joy to play; and I think because I've played it so much, and unintentionally studied it, my performance in the song is about as good as I can manage under the pressure of seeing the recording button lit!

 I've always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Jacknife Lee's production in this song but I've emerged from all that falling very much on the love side. The production is understated and all the better for it. I mean, it's practically mono until the end of the first verse, and the chorus and middle 8 are, at times, extremely muddy. But it suits the song. I've tried to mimic not just the instrumentation but the production in my cover and I'm really pleased with the results. Often it's much harder to cover the more well known songs because people are twice as likely to notice inconsistencies, but in this case I'm really happy with the work we've done and it may be one of my favourite covers so far.
