In this week's episode of the Frequency Horizon (broadcast on Pirate Cat Radio just as 38 inches of snowfall was underway), we offer an on-the-slope view of how one independent ski hill (Sierra-at-Tahoe) is doing a couple years after a devastating wildfire ripped through the property. Shout-out to the marketing department for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at how a local-focused mountain ticks.

We take you inside a Heavenly gondola of the sort made famous where a pour soul got trapped inside overnight a few weeks back.

And we hear firsthand from "lifties" themselves 1. About what it was like to cope with a slow start to the season and 2. Some of the underground DJs tearin' up the Legion dancefloors this year.

Given the recent suspected fentanyl deaths in town, we'll cap off the episode with an interview with State Senator Dave Cortese about efforts underway in Sacramento to get a handle on the overdose crisis.

Of course, we weave it all together with some top-shelf tune-age to help get you fired up to hop on a lift and carve some quality turns.

Phonocene/Fonocene is an excerpt from my latest book 'Beginning and Other Tragedies/Inizi e Altre Tragedie'.
This track is voice only, a crescendo of pathos and anticipation, which I hope does justice to the theme.

Phonocene

We’ve recognised our sound
in this Phonocene.
We’ve shared significance
and a territory, a place to be.
While feeling and hearing
birds crashing into the sky
trees imploding, people
tearing apart and decomposing
we cry out our phonos
of pure joy and echoes of grief.

We walk this Phonocene
with our eyes closed, stuck
in between bewilderment and action.
What can we do but hold on
and be memory for one another?
What can we do
but belong to life?

Phonocene/Fonocene

This week's Junto project has always been one of my favourites -- so I recorded the first third of what will eventually become a trio. I played it on my Tele through a simple, straightforward signal chain of Chase Bliss Mood (the main sound), fed through a Dark Star and a Polymoon to add space and variations in terms of timbre. No further editing in the DAW. 

I went for as sparse a track as I could, to provide as much space as possible for my potential collaborators. My hope is that you feel inspired by my "almost crumbling to pieces" vibe, and I look forward to hearing what you will be adding over the coming weeks for it to become a trio recording.
